Inktober 2021 - Art Nerds Unite

With Inktober starting tomorrow, I thought it would be a nice idea to put together a group where people can share their drawings and discuss ideas.

 

For those of you who don't know what Inktober is, it's pretty simple. Here's the description stolen directly from the Inktober website:

 

1) Make a drawing in ink (you can do a pencil under-drawing if you want).

 

2) Post it*

 

3) Hashtag it with #inktober and #inktober2021

 

4) Repeat

 

Note: you can do it daily, or go the half-marathon route and post every other day, or just do the 5K and post once a week. What ever you decide, just be consistent with it. Inktober is about growing and improving and forming positive habits, so the more you’re consistent the better.

 

That's it! Now go make something beautiful.

 

Inktober provide a list of drawing prompts for the month, which look a bit like this:

 

 

There are also a load of alternative prompt lists online, so if you'd rather do one of those, go for it! The point is to get people drawing regularly, so please do join us and post your creations.

I'll start us up since I cheated and got an early go on the prompts.   Also, some background on my 'art' hobby:  I had always enjoyed drawing and such as a kid, and dabbled with lots of fan art in early high school.    However, about 5-6 years ago, being an extreme D&D player, I wanted to be able to draw my characters and started putting more effort into learning actual things.   Spoiler, I hate the process of learning and would rather just do.   LOL  Long story short, I have kept up with it off and on.  I go through phases of getting lots of art time in, (3-4 a week) and then not touching the pencils for months.  I did start getting into digital art, first with the basic Wacom tablet and Manga Studio, and now with a Wacom One and Clip Studio Paint - again, the learning thing is a thing, so I mostly press buttons and muck around and do not properly know what I am doing.

 

Anyway!   I have a wedding to attend on Saturday the 2nd, so I did the Suit prompt yesterday.    I started by using a reference pic of a dude showing off a suit and had intended to just make it be a walking suit, with no one in it.  Then, out of nowhere, I decided I wanted a spriggan in it (Elder Scrolls creature) and so did that.    The finished product ended up looking Groot like and .... before I knew it, I had a GROOT SUIT RIOT!

I have been slacking with my paintings, partly because I don't know what to paint and I'm spending too much time on them instead of scribbling freely. I'd like to join so I can be prompted to make some stress free scribbles. Here's 1. Crystal:

Not super happy with this, but I didn't have much time today and I wanted to have something to show for day 1. Crystal:

 

 

Think I need a thinner pen for drawing things this small - something to bear in mind for next time.

It looks like a nice pen, though--it looks like you can get some variation in thickness with it. What sort of pen is it?

It's a Faber-Castell 0.5mm artist pen. You can get a bit of variation in thickness by different pressure, but not much. I've got some smaller ones, I just should have either used them or made the whole picture bigger.

This is cool! Crystal shading is confusing at best.

I am intrigued by your suit!  Was it the coat of arms on a suit?  Or is this another language curiosity!  Also super cool paper boat !!  @Jarric

My Vessel, is a vessel in a vessel.   (But remember that the flagon with the dragon has the brew that is true.)

Here is your daily reminder that I don't actually draw, but thought this inktober thing was neat

 

Knot is also a unit for speed, commonly used in aircraft. In October of 1947, Chuck Yeager was the first human to travel faster than the speed of sound (667 knots). He died last year sadly

I was just being a bit obscure . It's the four suits from a tarot deck - swords, wands, cups, and pentacles. And thank you!

That's a nice tribute. I couldn't figure out what the hell to do yesterday, and I looked at knots as a unit of speed but couldn't find a way to make it work.

Couldn't get inspired yesterday, and I couldn't get my head around the form of knots. I did a couple of pages of scribbles of knots that didn't work, but nothing came of them. It occurs to me now that I should maybe have done some shapes that appear to work but don't (I cannot recall the word for what I'm trying to describe here).

 

Today felt a bit better. No clever play on the prompt, just a raven:

Lovely Raven too!  I really love how you just open up your book and draw.   That's really impressive.  Everything I do is a combination of several reference pics!  LOL.  Ah well.    Someday I'll draw straight from my brain!

 

 

Speaking of copying from references, all I did to make this my own was change a foot and add the crow skull pendant in his talons.  But I really love ravens, and wanted to be super happy with mine today so I'll forgive the gross plagiarism of another artists idea for now.

I'd love to claim that as true, but actually I got a photo of a raven up on my computer and worked from that. Some stuff I draw from my head, but a lot more of it involves some kind of reference, particularly when it's a weird pose or a form I'm not familiar with.

 

I love your raven! I'm slightly scared of it, but it looks awesome!
