Ranger Hal Walks and Rucks (and nothing else)

Recommended Posts

The last couple of challenges I did (not the last challenge because I didn't do one), I noticed a pattern. The first two weeks would be great. I'd get 90%-100% of stuff done. The next two weeks it would be less and by the final week, I was barely doing anything. And because I didn't do anything last challenge, my exercise was pretty minimal, just a couple of weekend hikes. And that's not enough to keep up my fitness level for SAR and scrambling, plus snowshoe season is coming soon. So I'm going to do just one thing for this challenge: ruck two days a week and walk at least four more days for at least 10 minutes. That's it. I can go to bed whenever I want, dishes don't have to get done (at least until I run out of plates or spoons), I don't have to tidy the house, I don't have to do any yard work. Some of those things might happen anyway, but they don't have to. Oh, and I'm going to post that I did (or didn't do) my walk/ruck every day (which might lead to a very boring thread, but oh well).

Barely got my 10 minute walk in before I had to leave for work. I shouldn't cut it that close on Monday mornings because I'm supposed to be in a meeting and it actually matters that I'm there at a specific time (other times it mostly doesn't matter as long as I get the work done). I saw spawning salmon in the river for the first time which was cool. I might have to walk down to the edge of the river and see if I can get a closer look. The bridge I usually walk over is pretty high, so I couldn't see them very well. I also heard an elk (they sound kind of like a squeaky barn door) off in the distance.

Tuesday - 10 minute ruck. It was kinda sunny with some high clouds, but blue sky visible. Very pretty! I need to find something else to ruck because the tire chains that are in my backpack need to go in the car. Winter is starting in the mountain passes.

Maybe books for weight? or your laundry detergent bottle? Some wrenches?

Oooh, I like the laundry detergent bottle idea. I usually try to keep a full one as a spare in case the one I'm using runs out. I also have a decent size wrench and socket set that might work, too. Bonus is that both of those options are reasonably waterproof! I wouldn't be comfortable using books because we're headed into the rainy season and even with a waterproof pack cover, I'd be worried they'd get a little damp.

Aye, yeah. Not a good idea.

Did I forget Wednesday? Guess so. I did walk 10 minutes. Oh yeah, now I remember. It was raining. Well sort of. More like drizzle.

Thursday - 10 minute ruck. At the rate they're falling, the leaves will be gone from the trees soon. Also, the air this morning was warm and there was a bit of wind. It was weird. Maybe there's a storm coming, but not one of the usual fall storms. Those have a different feel.

We’ve been getting tornado warnings which is really weird for our area.  Hopefully nothing bad is going in your area.

Tornadoes sound scary. I've never lived in an area where that was a problem (although I've heard of one or two that knocked down a few trees and damaged a couple of houses, but they were very small and that's a freak accident sort of thing around here). We're apparently going to get hit with a "bomb cyclone" thingy in a couple of days. Sounds like a bunch of wind and rain, so there may be localized flooding and some trees and a lot of branches will probably come down. Might lose power as well (power lines don't like trees and branches falling on them for some reason), but I've got loads of camping gear, so I should probably be okay. I should probably charge up some extra batteries and throw some of the gear in my vehicle just to be safe.

The laundry detergent bottle idea is nice. They are usually flat enough that it wouldnt poke into your back.

I get the big Costco sized ones which are sort of cube shaped. It's probably overkill for one person, but I don't have to buy detergent very often!

Friday - 10 minute walk. Wet, but not raining. Nice!

I barely did any hiking this year, unfortunately. Might have to lurk in the background here and get my hiking thrills vicariously.

Do you have any weight plates at home? They sit nice and flat against your back for rucking.

If I recall, your puppy is still pretty young, but should be an awesome hiking companion in a year or two!

Unfortunately not. My "real weights" consist of a single kettlebell. I've thought about using it, but it would require a bunch of padding to keep it from shifting around and the shape is kind of awkward to be putting such a dense object in a pack.

Week 0 Summary

Monday - 10 minute walk

Tuesday -  10 minute ruck

Wednesday - 10 minute walk

Thursday - 10 minute ruck

Friday - 10 minute walk

Saturday - SAR training (not a whole lot of walking, but outside for 7+ hours)

I'm not planning to do anything for Sundays. Week 0 was good, 100%.

Week 1 is not off to a good start. I ran out of time to walk before work because I kept hitting the snooze button on my alarm and then I had to leave so I wouldn't be late to my Monday morning meeting. This is likely to be a problem every Monday and it's something I should work on. I will try to get a walk in later.

Monday - I did get my 10 minute walk in after work in the dark. The neighborhood is a bit noisy. Since the power is on (and thus it's not generators making the noise), I suspect it's water pumps, particularly because the general direction seemed to be towards the areas that got flooded almost two years ago. Those poor folks. They were probably still dealing with the aftermath of flooded houses when Covid hit.

Tuesday - 10 minute walk. Probably should have been a ruck, but it was raining and I haven't pulled together my new ruck pack and the old one still has the tire chains that I don't want to get wet because then I'll have to pull them out and dry them so they don't get rusty. Anyway. There were a couple of trees that came down on the trail over the last couple of days, but they'd already been cleared by last night. They looked like cottonwoods which isn't that surprising. Never set up your tent under cottonwoods.

I got new tires yesterday, but they couldn't get the spare out to replace it with one of the old tires. Too rusty or stuck or something. I'm going to have to crawl under the truck and see if I can get it unstuck. Preferably when it's not raining and not dark, but I don't know if I want to wait until those both to coincide with when I have some free time.

Wednesday - 10 minute walk. As Tank might say, this morning is a morning. Things that were not a big deal last week now feel like a big deal (even though nothing has changed) because hormones. Yuck.

Thursday - 10 minute walk. I still haven't gotten my ruck pack set up. Or taken a look at my stuck spare tire. Or fixed my problem of not getting up early enough to get to work (and thus leave from work) at a reasonable time to be able to do evening stuff. But tonight's evening SAR training was cancelled due to a mission I couldn't go to (because work), so I could stay late at work and get everything done. And I was actually semi-productive at work, so that's good. And I got my walk in.

Friday - 10 minute walk. A person was walking with their off-leash dog today. Person called the dog over to walk beside them and said to "leave it" a couple of times so I wouldn't be bothered and we laughed that if I had made eye contact with the dog, it probably would have run right up to me.

Week 1 Summary

Monday - 10 minute walk

Tuesday -  10 minute walk

Wednesday - 10 minute walk

Thursday - 10 minute walk

Friday - 10 minute walk

Saturday - 5 mile hike (it was way more than 10 minutes, lol)

It was a fairly good week. I got out every day, but I didn't do any rucks, so I'm going to count those days as half for a total of 83%.
