The Mad Poet Becomes Supernatural

DISCLAIMER: This challenge has nothing to do with the show Supernatural. Sorry if the title is misleading.

Late to the game, but blessed to be able to join this challenge. 

 

After some serious (but not severe) life challenges...

... I've found myself lost amid the chaos again. Bad eating habits and not staying active have taken a toll on my health lately. I used to be the guy who hardly gets sick, but now in the course of two months I've had a respiratory infection and a stomach virus, and my stress levels have been higher than typical. 

 

So, I return to something that used to both bring me joy and help me stay consistent with my workouts: lifting heavy objects

 

Upon visiting their site this morning, I came across a new-to-me RPG style workout program called Pathfinder. After a closer look, I've decided it's a perfect way to get back into caring for myself with some physical training. And, as has become part of my true nature, there will also be plenty of poetry to accompany this adventure.

 

PHYSICAL GOAL: Lift heavy objects as often as possible.

 

I've had to modify my goals since the first time I posted this, but I'm beginning to realize that I need to return to simple and practical. I'm finding opportunities to run but struggling to find time to follow a prescribed workout routine, so I've decided to start lifting heavy things again. This includes cinderblocks, logs, stones, kettlebells, weights, and my own body whenever the opportunity presents itself. They key is to lift mindfully, focusing on specific muscles/muscle groups and specific movements.

NUTRITIONAL GOALS: I will eat mindfully, selecting foods that nourish my body and don't leave me feeling blah after eating them.

From the Harvard School of Public Health:

 

"Eating mindfully means that you are using all of your physical and emotional senses to experience and enjoy the food choices you make. This helps to increase gratitude for food, which can improve the overall eating experience. Mindful eating encourages one to make choices that will be satisfying and nourishing to the body. However, it discourages “judging” one’s eating behaviors as there are different types of eating experiences. As we become more aware of our eating habits, we may take steps towards behavior changes that will benefit ourselves and our environment."

Seven practices of mindful eating

From SAVOR: Mindful Eating, Mindful Life 
  1. Honor the food. Acknowledge where the food was grown and who prepared the meal. Eat without distractions to help deepen the eating experience.
  2. Engage all senses. Notice the sounds, colors, smells, tastes, and textures of the food and how you feel when eating. Pause periodically to engage these senses.
  3. Serve in modest portions. This can help avoid overeating and food waste. Use a dinner plate no larger than 9 inches across and fill it only once.
  4. Savor small bites, and chew thoroughly. These practices can help slow down the meal and fully experience the food’s flavors.
  5. Eat slowly to avoid overeating. If you eat slowly, you are more likely to recognize when you are feeling satisfied, or when you are about 80% full, and can stop eating.
  6. Don’t skip meals. Going too long without eating increases the risk of strong hunger, which may lead to the quickest and easiest food choice, not always a healthful one. Setting meals at around the same time each day, as well as planning for enough time to enjoy a meal or snack reduces these risks.
  7. Eat a plant-based diet, for your health and for the planet. Consider the long-term effects of eating certain foods. Processed meat and saturated fat are associated with an increased risk of colon cancer and heart disease. Production of animal-based foods like meat and dairy takes a heavier toll on our environment than plant-based foods.

 

I do not plan to switch to a plant-based diet, but I do plan to increase the amount of vegetables and fruits that I consume and reduce processed meats.

 

MENTAL/SPIRITUAL GOALS: I will re-instate my morning practice. I will read and post one poem a day, as well as write a poem of my own every day.

And that is my challenge. As always, I am grateful to those of you who have faithfully encouraged me and followed me on this journey, even while I was away from the forums. I look forward to continuing with this new adventure.

For breakfast I was not faithful to the "no processed meat" because I had pork sausage patties; however, the pork sausage is from a local farm that raises its pigs humanely until they reach a certain age and then are killed for meat and other uses. I also had sautéed spinach  and mushrooms with diced onion and two fried duck eggs gathered from my mentor's ducks. I drizzled it with an organic vegan chipotle mayo sauce that I found on sale at Kroger.

 

I have a habit of watching videos or something on my phone while eating unless I am eating at a restaurant or with other people. This time I sat alone and took small bites, chewing on the food slowly to allow the taste to really sit on my tastebuds, giving time for my brain to identify each unique flavor and texture.

 

I completed the first chapter of Pathfinder. I was only able to make it to three of the five locations to rescue survivors. I completed 3 sets of the following:

  • 20 high knees (20/knee)
  • 20 butt kicks (20/leg)
  • 20 high knees (20/knee)
  • 10 side-to-side hops (10/leg)
  • 20 high knees (20/knee)
  • 10 reverse lunges (10/leg)

Sounds like some good food. Mindful eating is awesome, especially the good stuff. I’m as guilty as anyone of mindless eating sometimes, whether too much or too little. Especially when things get as hectic as they’ve been in your life lately.

Update for Tuesday 11/10:

 

PHYSICAL

Completed Chapter 2 of the Pathfinder program. I had to lead the survivors across the plain to a nearby mountain.

  • 5 sets of 40 march steps and 4 lunge step-ups, no break between each exercise

NUTRITIONAL:

Breakfast: organic sausage, egg, & smoked gouda breakfast burrito with caramelized onion and roasted potato

Lunch: organic Chipotle pepper chicken gemelli

Dinner: street tacos from Buffalo Wild Wings

 

I ate breakfast and lunch alone and had time to sit in silence, eat slowly, and savor my food. I expected to still be hungry after the breakfast burrito, but I actually felt full. Same with lunch. Dinner was with the family, so it was also social, so I was able to both savor the flavors of my food and enjoy quality time with my wife and kids.

 

MENTAL/SPIRITUAL:

Unfortunately, I slept in because the baby woke us up several times Monday night, so I did not have the chance to work through my morning routine. I did take a cold shower, however.

Found out I accidently doubled day 1... throwing in an extra survivor so I have 3 . Found out this is exactly what I needed to get started, thanks again!

Ehhh... gang, I don't know if this is going to work out. I'm struggling to find time to open up Darebee to read the storyline and get my workout in. With my previous routine, I could get up early, meditate/pray, and then have about thirty minutes to do my workout. However, the baby has been waking up either sometime in the middle of the night or early morning (right around 4:00), so that messes with my plans a bit. 

 

And if I'm honest, I'm getting kind of bored with the workouts. The Pathfinder story is cool, but the workouts are... just okay, I guess? I honestly miss lifting some cinderblocks and logs. I think I may have to return to that. This may be a more practical solution anyway since my equipment is in my back yard, so if I'm pressed for time I can always just grab a cinderblock on my way out to my car or when I have to be outside for other things, I can do about 10-15 presses or swings and get a good quick challenging lift in, at least. 

 

I hate to abandon my original challenge plan, but mindfulness is also about being aware of when something isn't working for you and then making the necessary adjustments. I'm still eating mindfully and enjoying some good poetry, but I have also put a pause on reading Savor (I've read it before, btw) and have started reading this:

Apologies for the absence again, gang. I hope everyone had a great challenge and (if you're in the U.S.) a wonderful Thanksgiving. Already got my idea in mind for my next challenge (hint: it's very similar to this one. 😆).

 

Been consistent with goals this challenge with the exception of my morning routine. This week really threw me off because everyone is home (no school or work all week). But any chance I had, I would grab one of the cinderblocks out back and do a few swings, presses, or curls with it. And (for the most part) I ate mindfully and without distractions (except for my Thanksgiving meal because it's one of those meals where you should be mindful of connection and conversation, as well as what you're eating).

 

I just finished Chapter 2 of Becoming Supernatural (it's hefty but fascinating). In preparation for my next challenge, I created several playlists on Insight Timer to collect some meditations that  I feel will be perfect for one of my challenge goals, which is to "reboot" my mediation practice using some of the methods discussed in Dr. Dispenza's book.

 

I'm almost finished with my Masters degree. Portfolio is due by Sunday (I'll probably submit it tonight or tomorrow). I have my Praxis test for Educational Leadership Saturday afternoon. This is happening! By December, I will have a Masters degree, and (possibly) by next fall I could be working as an assistant principal somewhere.

I passed my Educational Leadership Praxis! Now all I need to do is finish my Master's degree (just submitted my final portfolio for approval), and then I can become a licensed school administrator.

Yup just a little on your plate, may that Portfolio be accepted as awesomeness!

 

Also Pathfinders workout ended up making me realize how damn weak my hips are that it had me wanting to work on just a regular strength training routine. 

Thank you for sharing  your Darebee challenge as it helped me wrap around my  head that I'm not ready for the Apocalypse.
