Ranger Hal's Advent Challenge

Recommended Posts

This is an Advent challenge which means it's a time of preparation for Christmas. We're already halfway through Advent so I need to get to it. I'm also planning a trip to the Grand Canyon in a couple of months and I need to prepare for that as well. I haven't been doing nearly enough hiking in the last couple of months.

Advent readings

Sleep better (in actual bed by 11pm, up by 7am)

Walk/hike 6 days a week for a total of at least 7 miles per week; one day has to be at least 4 miles

Three NF Workouts per week

Clean one thing per day

Last night, I didn't want to do the workout, but I did it anyway. I also washed and reapplied waterproofing to my good heavy-duty rain jackets. This is Seattle, so I own at least four rain jackets for various purposes. I'm going to a funeral this weekend as a SAR person and figured my "uniform" should be clean instead of grungy with odd black streaks. Formal events as a SAR person are always a bit odd because our "uniforms" consist of athletic tee-shirts and gore-tex jackets with the unit logo, so not really formal wear, but it's all we have. And in the field, wearing the "uniform" is not required (so people wear whatever they happen to have) which means we're never uniform anyway, lol!

Which NF workout are you doing?

I'm doing the Bodyweight Level 1 workout on the app. I didn't feel like really doing the placement test, so I just started at Level 1, although I do a harder variation than the default for many of the exercises.

Week 1 Summary:

Advent readings: Pretty good. I might have forgotten Sunday. I don't remember and won't be able to check until I'm home tonight.

Sleep: Didn't do so good at hitting bedtime or wake-up time. Sleeping in the actual bed was good until Friday night when my mind was just racing at 1 am and I couldn't sleep, so I decided to put on the TV and lie on the couch because I can definitely fall asleep that way if I'm tired enough. Sunday I slept on the couch because I thought the mind racing might be a problem again.

Walk/Hike: Would have been really good if I'd kept up with the daily walks, but I did get in a hike on Saturday which probably wouldn't have happened without the challenge, so that's good.

Workouts: Nailed it!

Clean: Could use more work.

I did the benchmark and it said I could start at level 4. I am doing the pushup challenge first because I felt like those really needed work. I will be interested to hear how the workouts go for you.

I'm sure I could have started at a higher level because assisted squats and wall pushups are definitely too easy, but the completionist part of me decided I was going to want to do all the levels and starting at the beginning seemed the most logical way to accomplish that. I like the way they've made it easy in the app to switch between harder and easier variations of the exercises. Good luck with your pushup challenge!

Got my booster on Sunday. My arm got really sore (it was worst when I woke up at 3 am, but I went back to sleep) and I ran a low grade fever for a bit. I'm better now though. I almost skipped the workout on Monday night, but I'm glad I didn't. It wasn't as bad as I expected, although I did do waist high pushups instead of knee pushups in consideration of my sore arm. Then I went on a (short) cleaning spree where I did a bunch of dishes and the smallest (but grossest) section of counter.

I had ordered a part for my vehicle to keep the spare tire in place, but I opened the package today and it's not the one I wanted. Not excited about having to return or exchange it.

Christmas isn't here yet and I'm already tired. Because of the weekend, there are six church services across the next four days (I might only go to five of them, haven't decided yet). And then there's food and people and everything. And all I want to do is curl up and sleep until Monday.
