(I've had some difficulties posting here - browser crashing - so here's hoping I can make this one stick and get you all in on lending some accountability to my up-skilling and capacity building! Bear with me on this first long post. I'm clearing some back log)

... Later, at the Backyard Axe Throwing League I got to practice axe throwing from about 11pm to midnight. This was awesome fun.

... Later, as in the next day, I was pretty much immobilized due to excessive lower back strain. The deads had felt great, I biked around a lot and then threw axes. Backs are tricky things. Fortunately physio's are magicians and got me put back together in no time!

"Adventure WOD" ... a training session for Tough Mudder, Spartan Race, Warrior Dash, etc. -style races. A mixed bag including:

- crawling across a soccer field

- climbing up onto a solid cement block approx 7 feet high. This was done in a team of 4 with first and last people doing it solo and then assisting middle team mates up and then down.

- Three rounds of hill sprints followed by 30x battle rope slams, done as a 4 person team relay

- A hand-to-hand sandbag "bucket brigade" across a sports field and back, 5 "laps"

- Some running

and then, as I'm obsessed with them, more pull ups"

kettlebell Turkish Get Ups: worked on maximum weight singles on each side - 20kg/44lbs, 24kg/53lbs, 28kg/61.5lbs, 32kg/70.5lbs ... The next available KB was 40kg/88lbs which seemed like too big a jump so I did one rep using a 65lb barbell in my right hand. Did not attempt a rep with left, just didn't have the wrist strength.

WOD, 15 minutes, every minute on the minute completing one round of 10x wall balls (20lb ball) and 10x box jumps (24 inch box). Completed 14 rounds, taking the 9th round as a 1 minute break

rope climbing: 5 ascents of a 15 foot rope using arms only (didn't use my preferred Spanish Wrap technique because I'd worn low socks and shorts and do not like the brutal rope burns I get on my ankles in that case)

... totally burned out at the end of the day. Did not do my usual base of pull ups (The Recon Ron progression, searchable online - I'm currently on "week 12" though I've not been progressing "one week per week" due to inconesistency)

.... and now things get inconsistent as I do a work trip in California. I travel a lot. This is the downfall of my progress. Work days run long, I relocate frequently, all routine goes out the window. Aigh. "Aigh" but I'll supersede and be stronger for it.

Posting while watching American Ninja Warrior Midwestern qualifying ... wow. Never seen this before.

5 rounds of 2 minutes each movement for max reps (20 minutes total work):

turkish get up, 50lb DB: 8, 6, 6, 7, 6

long cycle clean and jerk, 50lb DB: 23, 23, 20, 20, 18

This is one of my favourite WODs. This was a pretty pekid performance; about 20% fewer reps across the board than my usual.

The door frame of the hotel bathroom does not fit my portable pull up bar! No Recon Ron ( http://webpages.charter.net/bert/reconron.html ) tonight. Boo. I'm falling distinctly behind on my one stage progression per week again. I've been "at it" for a year now and am only at week 12. My goal? 30 consecutive strict, dead hang pull ups. This one's a long term goal.

Run: 400m "laps" for 5 minutes work, 2.5 minutes rest, 4 minutes work, 2 minutes rest ... 1 minute work. 10 laps or 4km total

"Finisher": 50 toes to bar. Any time letting go of the bar doing 10 handstand pushups against wall. Untimed, done with 30 HSPU.

14:43 (... almost double my personal record time. I blame the lay off from pull ups and a persistent and recently extra-aggravated ankle problem for wrecking the runs)

run, approx 5km and while doing so...

when I got to a playground with swingset:

5 rounds of 2 free standing handstand balancing attempts, 5 pull ups (on a very fat swingset support ... I hear alternating grips is a great way to minimize overuse stress on hands and wrists for people who do large volumes of pull ups. It also adds some spice, variety and a feeling of being able to climb anything if you ask me), then 2 more hand balancing attempts (these all went pretty well), 5 more pull ups. This made for a total of 20 handstands and 50 pullups

... then at the next playground

5 round of 10 kipping pull ups and 10 push ups. (so 50 of each at this stop)

... some more running to get home.

Will likely play some softball or throw a frisbee this evening. A beautiful, beautiful day to be outside!

TOMORROW: Academy of Lions Olympic Lifting Meet! I signed up today having learned about it just yesterday. As you can see from this log I've been pretty thin on the olympic lifting the past couple of months. We'll see how it goes.

... I've lifted all of these weights in training in the past but those were all at least 6 months ago with very little practice in the interim. I also had ridiculous butterflies. At some point during my snatch warm ups I realized that the only athletic "competitions" I've ever been in before are endurance running races and those have never felt competitive and certainly haven't been done as a conspicuous individual - there are normally thousands of people. That was the biggest win: the one over my nerves. More of these to come!

"running in place" ... Wasn't able to count as these were at the very limit of my coordination and concentration. I did complete more of them more smoothly than ever before.

No good door jambs for pull ups bar! Insufficiuent motivation to go out to parking lot and jump rope toward Double Under goal. Uh-oh - one week and only one jump rope practice session? That is not commitment.
