There is a new bookstore in my area! I'd be more excited if there wasn't a pandemic, but still... new bookstore! :)

The Great Reading Thread of 2024

“I've always believed that failure is non-existent. What is failure? You go to the end of the season, then you lose the Super Bowl. Is that failing? To most people, maybe. But when you're picking apart why you failed, and now you're learning from that, then is that really failing? I don't think so." - Kobe Bryant, 1978-2020. Rest in peace, great warrior.

Is anyone reading anything in particular to celebrate banned books week?

I'm finally diving into I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, which has been on my TBR for long and long; my tiny but determined local library just got the audiobook.

I didn't even realize it was banned books week. Hoping to get to Legends and Lattes this weekend, so unless someone has a strong objection to cozy fantasy, I guess I'll be skipping the banned books this year.

I read Maus a couple of months ago, and counted that as my "banned" book because of all the circus around it earlier this year.

I'm going to spoiler the URL with a content warning that the link leads to mention of sexual abuse of children, as is partially revealed by the URL itself. It's an article I found the other day, on the Boston Globe website. If you've ever seen the movie Spotlight, it might interest you to read the article the entire movie leads up to:

Happy Almost-the-end-of-the-year to all fellow readers!

I have, unsurprisingly, failed to meet my annual reading challenge yet again. Thankfully, that wasn't the point (and this year's prize wasn't that exiting anyway), and I have enjoyed almost every scrap of reading I've done this year.

And despite neglecting this thread for the past couple of months, I volunteer to create a new Reading Thread for 2023, unless  of course someone else feel passionately about this and really wants to create the thread instead. :)

I did not meet my reading goal this year, and I'm also not happy about the quality of books I read either in trying to make that goal. Next year, I'm going to worry less about how many books I read and aim to be more intentional in choosing books that I think will be worth diving into.

Just gonna say I am excited to jump into the continuation of this group for 2023. I have plenty of reading ahead based on my trend of reading all this year. I keep track through my library, and even participated in their adult summer reading program. My wish list is always changing as I add new titles and discard ones that I have not enough interest in to keep around. But every once in a while I add a book, read it, and love it so much I get myself a physical copy. 😍

I've recently done this with T Kingfisher's books about the Saint of Steel. The hardcover volumes are beautiful and I look forward to having them on my (too small) bookcase. :)

I didn't hit my number goal for books this year but my biggest reading goal this year was to finish The Silmarillion, and that happened, so I'm not upset about the number.

*The Candlestone by Bryan Davis (Dragons in our Midst Series #2)

*The Shoebox Secret by Lauren Luwoye
