Terra harnesses momentum!

Momentum is what I need these days, but it can’t be the kind that takes you over and smashes you to bits at the end of the day…

I found the following definitions for momentum:

  • PHYSICS - the quantity of motion of a moving body, measured as a product of its mass and velocity.
  • the impetus and driving force gained by the development of a process or course of events."the investigation gathered momentum in the spring"

 

Both definitions are applicable to me. I need momentum to make the small habit changes needed to improve my health.  I need momentum to stay positive and encouraging for me and my family.  I need momentum to take that jump into management at work.  And I need a way to track this momentum that is inspiring!

 

Lots of thoughts that have tumbled out of my head tonight, although honestly they have been rolling around in there for the last couple of weeks! I'm spilling my stream of consciousness, hidden in here...

Where to start?  Lets ask some questions:

  • Why do I need to make changes?
  • What do I need to do?
  • What can I control?
  • What is out of my control?
  • What is (where do I find) my motivation?
  • How can I sustain the motivation till I make habits?
  • How will I measure progress?
  • Where do I go for support when I am struggling?

 

Answers:

Why make changes - My latest round of blood work was not good.  I have liver issues, my AC1 was borderline high, my cholesterol was high and something else I can’t remember right now.  My weight is at an all time high.  I have trouble bending over to tie my shoes.  Lack of flexibility affects BJJ performance. I have minimal stamina. My strength is decreasing. I’m not able to fully recover from hip surgery.

 

What do I need to do - Take better care of me!  Lose weight, increase strength, increase flexibility, increase stamina, improve mood, lower blood poor health blood markers and do all of this with out losing my ever-living mind!

 

What can I control - I can control my actions, my reactions and my choices.  I can attend classes. I can exercise. I can eat veggies and fruit, lean meats. I can drink enough water. I can take time for me. I can help others. I can choose to be happy. I can take others comments in the most positive light possible.  I can take care of me and love myself as I am, while making changes to make me healthier and happier.

What can’t I control - how my body reacts to the changes, how others respond to my choices and other external factors that the world throws at me.

 

What is my motivation - Typically my motivation is for others (hubby and girls) but perhaps my motivation needs to be for me at this time.  I want to be healthy and live life to the fullest.  I want to be able to do the things that make me happy and be comfortable in my body.  I want to love myself, love my body, through the process to a healthy transformation. And in the end who doesn’t want to look and feel great every day!

 

How do I sustain momentum through to make habits - This one is hard!!!  I like visual things and last month’s sticker chart was lovely.  It was in the wrong place but it gave me ideas.  I am going to create a bullet journal.  It will be simple because I’m not artists, but it will be as beautiful as I can make it.  It will sit right here, at the table where I sit every morning and have breakfast.  Right here where I will see it every day.  And I will make it lovely, colorful and fun.  Instead of reading crappy books with my morning coffee and yogurt, I will review my BoJo and start my day off recording yesterday’s accomplishments, reviewing my goals for the day and reminding my self to be present and grateful every moment of the day.

 

How to measure progress - I will take my weight sometimes.  I will try on a beautiful dress that does’t fit yet. I will reflect on how my clothes feel. I will ask myself how my body feels today. I will go to classes. I will eat good food. I will exercise. I will meditate. I will learn. I will track it much of it in my BoJo.  In a few months I will go back to the doctor and get blood work done again.  I will ask myself if I am mentally OK today.  I will find more happy.

 

What will I do when I need support - I will ask for help. I will ask for support. I will talk to a counselor when I don’t want to burden my friends and family. I will reach out to my friends in person and online.  I will vent here at NF when needed.  I will not suffer in silence.

 

This seems like a lot but really it is all the things I know about myself and all the things I know I should be doing.  I need to figure out how to share the details here or somewhere online that I can link it here.  I want to share my progress with my friends.

 

One last thought - I need to take care of myself to show my daughters how to take care of themselves.  My oldest is struggling with her dysautonomia and EDS diagnosis (we spent the night in the hospital just before Christmas) and I want her to know that although taking care of ones self is hard, it is worth it in the end!!!

 

 

I’m off to find the dot journal that I know is around here somewhere and create a good set of goals for the coming days, weeks and even months!

Really, I think your 'why' is because you want to live life to the fullest. You don't make changes because of an issue you have, you make changes because of what that issue means, fundamentally, to your way of life. It may be different for you, but I would find it more motivating to bring that stuff to the core, if that makes sense.

 

Also, I absolutely love the bujo stuff. You're right, it's not about being an artist, it's about having fun with it and finding something that motivates you. I think that's a really good habit to stick with.

I like your suggestions, they make sense to me.  Now I'm sitting here in front of my first BoJo attempt, and I am going to redo it so I like it better.  Photo post coming soon....

Look what I did!!!  I found some stencils that helped with the shapes and straight lines.  🤩

 

That's gorgeous! So much better than my little scribbled one. I love the honeycomb calendar particularly; I may have to pinch that!

Now that I made it pretty, I love the BoJo!!!  It keeps me on track and so far I am doing good.

 

Life's schedule is constantly changing.  Since my last post:

  • I got permission to go back into the office. 
  • The local high school moved into remote learning for at least 10 days, maybe more. 
  • Hubby's travel got cancelled but he has been going 5 +hours in teleconference meeting from home with his headphones on (he talks very loud!)
  • Eldest child is not getting her needed nutrition.  Next week's telemed with her GI doctor may have us headed north again to the hospital. 
  • I think I am going to be asked to move into a management position at work today.

 

I am remembering to take a few minutes each day to be grateful for something.  I am taking a few minutes each day to breathe and reflect/meditate.  I am doing more PT and biking in my spare time.  I will get back to more BJJ classes next week.  I am thinking about what I eat and making better choices.   😁  Physically I am feeling kind of yuck, but I know these steps are headed in the right direction.

I'm a few days behind on the BoJo. but I know it is still there...  I want to update it and make it pretty.

It was an interesting long weekend.  I have a short work week and another three day weekend.  I am catching a groove with all things in my life except for the house stuff, which causes stress with the hubby.  I will think about how to do more here with out impacting other areas of focus... 

 

I did get on the scales as part of the lose weight PVP challenge and lost 1.5 pounds last week.  I will keep this going with my good choices and mindful behavior.

Speaking of behavior...

I had a thought about stress eating...  I am going to try to re-calibrate my reaction to stress.  Instead of eating too much comfort food, I am going to try to do some (ANY) form of exercise.  This retraining has two parts: First I must recognize that I am stress eating (or am wanting to eat) and second, I must walk away from the food and do some movement.  Exercise can be as simple as a few stretches, talking a walk, riding the stationary bike at home, physical therapy exercises or anything I feel like doing that is physical, except eating something.   Writing it here makes my intentions clear to the universe and now  I just need to ...

And yes, they asked me to be the acting manager for a while.  Yes, there are big changes coming up. I hope I don't hate being a manager but I need to give this a shot at this time.  It has me excited and freaked out all at the same time.

Last night one of the kiddos came down with a fever, so covid testing this morning.  That also means that we are stuck at home again.  

 

Last night the hubby and I went to BJJ but we worked together.  I think i have a couple new bruises from class, they are just new and temporary war paint. 😉  Food has been OK and yesterday I took time for me.  I got a referral to an adult orthodontists (sigh) and took care of several calls on the girls medical stuff.  

 

It is a cold and dreary day so a little self care tonight is a must.  I'm thinking ...

Rushing Episode 2 GIF by Everything's Gonna Be Okay

 

Hi everyone! So I have been holding down the fort with everything and trying to take care of myself while not overeating.  I have been OK at these goals.  Some exercise has happened (not enough), food choices have been mostly to plan, I have managed to find a moment to ground myself each day and I am grateful for so many things.    A couple things of interest...  My PT did a check and my shoulder has made no progress so she sent me off to get a referral and CT scan.  I got that scan today (on a Sunday!).  Eldest spawn met with her GI specialists.  Not much help there, but we got off the meds that didn't help. We are going to check with a local doctor (who is also my doctor, friend and BJJ buddy) to go over everything and see if there is anything that can be done for her pain levels. We see another GI specialists on Feb 2nd.  My girl is beyond frustrated!!!  The other spawn is dealing with some bladder issue that tests negative for an infection but just doesn't go away.  Whew!

 

This week is sort of back to normal...  youngest spawn goes back to in person school, eldest spawn has a meeting about school sometime and on Thursday I have both a mammogram and MRI of my liver.  I am taking that day off work to spend a few moments alone by myself.  Hubby is doing good, just not understanding all the girl stuff going on with his teenager daughters.   Tomorrow morning is weigh in for the PvP.  Wish me luck!

This morning was crazy.  No weight, but thats OK.  I'll get it tomorrow morning. 

 

Simple and quick update...  Today has a good food plan, BJJ and core tonight.  I''m going to fill up my water bottle now, then peel a grapefruit to nibble on and I'll get my shake later to complete lunch.  I got my shoulder MRI results this morning and I am trying to understand what they mean.  And that is it for today!

I'm glad you are getting the appointments to deal with your health challenges and those of your family.

 

I don't know what the problem is with GI specialists. Cleo got testing done to figure out what is wrong with her system, but it is going to be a month before she can meet with the GI doctor to get results and hopefully a diagnosis. I hope your eldest has better luck with the next doctor.

She is seeing another doctor today, a local one, who we hope can help with the pain and give my girl some hope/support.  I am really worried about her! 

 

I also got the news that I have a significant partial tear in my Supraspinatus tendon of the shoulder rotator cuff.  It is mostly torn and so the doctor recommended I talk with an orthopedic surgeon.  Damm!!!  Likely another surgery, not what I needed right now.  It is possible (likely?) the hip recovery may have aggravated the shoulder.  At least all my doctors recommended the same shoulder guy and he comes to my town once a week!  I'll take it.

I will take it easy at BJJ and core classes but I won't stop going.  I went last night and stopped or modified when my shoulder hurt.  Its better than nothing and I have social interactions there that I need.

LOL - I rolled for 45 minutes tonight, then worked the next 15 minutes with our of the kids in class on triangle escapes.  Then core class kicked my ass.  Honestly it was the first time in a long time I have broken a good sweat that was not related to a hot flash.  🥵 This morning I spend 15 minutes helping my hubby shovel the snow off our driveway.  We got about  4 inches of the white stuff.

Food today was... well let's just call it hardy.  But I kept everything to one serving and I even gave away my last 5 french fries because I was full.  

 

Still trying to get eldest spawn to drink more nutrition shakes.  Hoping that the new meds help.

Now that my hubby is back home and feeling better he is determined to get his black belt.  Now that Professor finally decided to be an official affiliate of Royce Gracie we will have to test with Royce to get black belts, and honestly that scares the crap out of me!!!  Fear can be a powerful motivator!

Honestly I miss the snow. We get snow here but then it melts (and everything turns muddy brown in the world) and then it snows again.  I am just far enough south that it doesn't stick on the ground for too long.  I love that @spezzyloves to shovel!  It's great exercise, while accomplishing something valuable.  

 

 

Today was more medical poking and prodding, however I am done with tests for a while.  I stopped at my favorite GF bakery and picked three loaves of bread while I was in Santa Fe.  I took the whole day off thinking the test this morning were spread further apart.  

 

Tonight in BJJ class.  Other than an extra baked goodie from the bakery food choices will be good.  Tomorrow will be a busy day at work trying to get stuff done before I get moved into management...

Seriously, though, that's badass. Just, please, be careful! Not for me as a white belt to lecture a purple on the way of things, of course, but I'd really hate to hear you got hurt. :(

I am very careful and I won't work with everyone, promise. Everyone who works with me KNOWS of my limitations and I start to squeal if the shoulder goes in the wrong direction.  It is a great reminder to keep my elbows tucked in tight to my body because that doesn't hurt!  😜
