Chesire battles a dangerous duo.

Recommended Posts

These two delight in a lack of progress, in maintaining the mental status quo, and possibly backsliding if they can make it work.  They've decided to combine efforts and come for me just when I want to advance some skills and when I need to focus on continuing education.

The Distraxolotl-  It is a cute little critter who whispers to unwary people that 'all the things' deserve attention, and that 'you can finish later' but 'later' is filled with another thing.  He offers 'false' progress through acquiring lots of new skills without actually advancing in any current skills.   He's come for me just as I've finished two major goals and am drawn in several directions by a  few things I've had in the back of my mind.

The Ignoraminx-  A wily animal that sneaks around the edges of thought.  It gently sings the alluring suggestion that learning is hard work and unnecessary.  It values idling in what you already know and convincing its victim that education efforts are pointless.  Maybe just give up that thing that requires education?  That sounds easier.  Thankfully I recognized its song in time.  And it may have backfired!  Its mindless melody reminded me that I have an impending deadline for continuing education.

We've met the insidious creatures, on to the plan for battling them.

I have a shiny new point system that I've outlined in my battle log.  This is my first attempt applying it.  Here we go!

-to fight the Distraxolotl I need to pick and focus on specific tasks that will either use (up) supplies I have, advance current skills, or learn new but related skills.    3 pts per day/ 4 days per week = 12 pts wkly

The battle plan is: 🦎

  • finish the  crazy yarn project for Lyn
  • finish the dragonwing shawl I've drooled over for years and finally started
  • either start learning Tunisian crochet to continue my on-going goal to convince knitters that crochet isn't just granny squares, or pick my next knit skill to learn and a project to go with it.  But!  only if I'm having success against the Ignoraminx.

-elude the Ignoraminx by making progress on the massage CEUs I need by the end of April (this can take two challenges to actually complete if needed) and return to the studying I need to do for my job (to meet other personal goals)  2 pts per day/ 4 days per week = 8 pts wkly

The battle plan is: 🦨

  • make significant headway on massage ceus.  subtasks are:
  1. look up exact hour needs and dates for AMTA and state license
  2. double check what I've already done
  • return to learning difference in sewing machines by:
  1. returning to cbt work
  2. using machines at work to do the learning tasks from each ^cbt^

-ongoing lesser goal for the challenge are 1 pt per day/ 4 days per week = 4 pts wkly each

  • strength training - finish current DB program then return to my own pull up focuses plan, if the weather allows me to play outside yet.   4 pts wkly 🏋️‍♀️
  • pick a household task daily.  Any sort of task; cleaning, meal planning, making it more homey (ie painting etc), whatever is needful   4 pts wkly 🏚️🏠🏡🏘️  (hey look! different levels of houses!)

Points basic breakdown

total 28 pts/ week.  140 per challenge

bonus point is 1 pt per extra day of any above.

Tldr: I like your challenge setup!

I have a sewing project shirt refit that has been 98% finished for weeks EXCEPT FOR SEWING 8 BUTTONS ON. That's it. That's all it needs. I've got the buttonholes done, even. I have actually worn this shirt out in public, without front buttons,  having not managed thus far to just sew them on, already.

I am a funny (funny-weird) human.

I think it's so cool to be aware of the root causes of our behaviors (like distraction/willful ignorance), and tackle them head on with the challenges. I think it really helps us realize the power and control we do have, even though sometimes it seems the behaviors are out of control. Personal responsibility, yay!

Hand sewing.   ugh.  And buttons are so fiddly!  One button a day?  a week?  It will be ready for spring if you do one per week :) This is why I avoid patterns with buttons

I just had a reminder about my brother's wedding v2.0 this May.  They are having a 'real' wedding since the plague interrupted the intended plans 2 years ago.  I would like to wear my same bridesmaid dress.  Fingers crossed it still fits.  I have no major reason to think it won't except for the possibility of more back muscle.  I probably can but don't want to do alterations if I don't have to.

I am impressed by your casual probable potential to alter a bridesmaid dress. (Formal wear would cast serious intimidation for me - lack of experience with formal fabrics and linings, I think.) Hope it fits with no need for changes!

Um, hi. Your dangerous duo has been hanging out around my brain a lot - could you please keep them under control? Or maybe I should just follow along and learn how to fight them myself... 😄

Very cool challenge set up - looking forward to following along!

I went nutty and took on the challenge of making it for the original wedding date!  Cuz, ya know, I'd never worked with silk, didn't have quite the amount of fabric that the pattern called for, and ultimately Frankenstein-ed together 3 patterns to make a style that worked for me, and all that seemed like a fun challenge at the time.  🙃 It took about 8 months and a huge leap of courage to cut that silk!  In a very twisted way I was thankful I couldn't work due to the lockdowns; it gave me the time I needed.  So, now it's 'just a dress I made' and less intimidating.

Well.  Somewhere last weekend, amid seeing 4yo twins and a first bday party with 5 other kids (7 child weekend) I picked up a cold (I tested so I know what it isn't).  I feel like a walking trope.  Child-free adult sees kids, gets sick.   At least my battle plan benefited from sitting and not working out!

🦎I finished up a quick project that is blocking right now - Dragon wing shawl.  pics soon.  I bought the yarn I needed to finish Lyn's crazy yarn project.

on deck:  try on dress, take pics (way more effective than mirrors,) and make necessary decisions.

🦨I am now armed with info re: CEUs.  How much I need and when the deadline is.

Next step; find out how much I already purchased and not done yet.

🏋️‍♀️just nope on those two really rough days.  will check what today's w/o entails and decide from there

just keep on keepin on

you got this wing it GIF

Oh, this method sounds very familiar. Do a bit of research (or not, depending on confidence level), then jump in, and wing it all the way! It's actually helped me build skills, and made me realize how brave we are to do crazy stuff like this. Also, I tend to do stuff the awkward way the first time, get it finished, and then do more research on the traditional way to do it, which I then understand better.

I almost forgot a different project I was finishing up.  Geez I sound super productive this week.  Short story version; my boss wants to have a nice rotation of shop samples in current fabrics and patterns but she can't keep up so she's sharing the work load in a cool way.  We can either make a sample that will live at the store for 3 months and we get it at the end (she pays for supplies) or make a sample for the store that stays there (we get paid for our time.)  As a frugal person but also someone who doesn't always care for the fabrics/patterns on offer....  I really like either of these!

This is my first sample which will be coming home with me for the summer.

For those who are interested, I made a very simple pattern a lot more work.  The fabric (its actually cotton toweling) was supposed to be two pieces total cut on the bias , but ...stripes.  So I added front/back seam to get the bias hang and stripes that I like.  I am VERY proud of those matching stripes.  That took forever.  😆

Finished up a few things, ordered my ce stuff, vacuumed and meal planned.  This week needs to have a few days of ce engaged time and trying on the dress.  Maybe get ready for fixing the water leak stained ceiling in the bathrooom (do I have the primer for that?)

So true! Funny how a week can "feel" bad, but is pretty good once you break it down!

Good luck with all the goals this week - sounds like you've got a pretty busy week ahead of you!

Something huge has come to light.  I couldn't seem to get MrC involved in anything vaguely house related, skipping lots of wandering background story, he ended up doing some soul searching about why things were rough in the department and realized he hates this house.  He bought it because it was the best he could find in his budget years ago and was never excited about it.  This explains so much since tendrils from this reach everywhere!  I'm not overly attached since I moved in when we got married.  We aren't moving anytime soon, but the outlook has started to change.

Time for a check-in now that the week is basically done.

Also this stuff still need's attention.  But now there is a different outlook on house repair!  I will do a little CE time as soon as i finish this and at least go dig out the dress to press it.

🏠🏠❌❌🏠❌🏠  26/28 points    So far 93 points.  I forget my 'passing' threshold and don't feel like clicking over to look it up right now, Besides that would be tempting fate or something.

Instead I will recap what I've done so I can see it written out and not feel like I'm cheating to win with those little 1️⃣s carrying me through :)

🦎Finished Lyn's crazy yarn shawl.  (need to post pic here or there. (last week)  I had a successful sewing project which does double duty as a wearable muslin (with necessary changes made to pattern pieces) and have the nice fabric to make it later 'for real.' (this week).   Yes, The Dress still fit (as in it wasn't too small anywhere) but I didn't do the pics.  So do that and decide if I want to tweak the fit or if I'm the only one who will notice (likely)

🦨 Working my way through cont. ed. videos.  I hate cbt/webinar/video training.  Just complaining.  I will finish this one before the end of the challenge 🤞 Promising this to myself

🏋️‍♀️Picked back up with the NFBW over in Prime.  Generally pleased with where I'm at.   A little bit lost in pull-up capacity, but to be expected.  Will plod away at this to work toward yearly goal.  But I did realize I'm in the best shape I've ever been in my life and as I'm running right in to 45 this year, I'm extremely happy with that.  (side note: also really happy to have hit the point that f**k what other people think and same for fashion.  Go with what you like and what works for you)

🏠That realization MrC had about not liking this house has had .... repercussions.  Not only has the outlook of house projects changed and his willingness to participate , but we also had a quick conversation establishing connection with a real estate agent.  But just a keep us in mind conversation, not let's get this done.   Cleaned up basement this week and will be fixing the ceiling where we had a leak... uh.. 8 years ago.  Embarrassing.

One last thought.  We have a short trip coming up in a week.  We will be gone for most of the week.   I need to figure out how to handle the point situation.  Obviously I don't want to 'punish' myself for taking time either by missing out on points or by trying to overdo and hurt myself in any way.  Will think on this and open to ideas.   Mabye I will flip flop challenge wk 5 and zero wk.

That's great headspace to get into. I'm turning 40 this year. I kind o f like the feeling of having spent 40 years with myself, and the confidence in both my experience and my ability to change my mind. It feels a little... powerful, actually.

This sounds like a really good, easy solution. The only vague ideas I have are 1) adjusting your total challenge points down (so that being on track still gives you a passing total); or 2) coming up with some scaled-back or completely alternate version of your challenge actions which you can award yourself full points for. Like, count packing for the trip and doing the laundry when you get back as 2 household tasks?

Sometimes it can be easier to get things done with the mindset that you're going to sell (even if it's still far off). I think it takes some of the pressure off of finding the "perfect" solution to a lingering task, it just has to be good enough to pass a home inspection and then it's the next owner's problem!

Congrats and I love the attitude! That is so very impressive, I feel like not many can say they're in the best shape of their life at middle age! I hope to be able to do the same (even at 36, I'm already doing things that 26 year old me would have found impossible!).
