Ranger Hal Gets Her Heart Rate Up

Recommended Posts

This will be a terribly boring intro (like last time, and maybe the time before). I need to keep doing the things and get in more cardio.

Here are the things:

Leave for work by 8:30 am

Workouts - NF bodyweight 2x a week

Cardio - Jump rope 2x a week + something on the weekend

Readings - weekdays

Prayer rope - every day

Clean the kitchen counter every day

Brush teeth in the evening

Maybe I will add a bedtime. That would probably be a good idea. I'll think about it.

I replaced the on/off dial on one of my wall heaters. That's the second time the one on that particular heater has burned out. When the dial goes bad, the heater stays on all the time and I have to use the breaker to turn it off. If it happens again, maybe I'll replace the whole heater instead of the dial. I've had no problems (so far) with the dials on any of the other heaters in the house, just that one.

I'm trying to do more cooking from scratch instead of buying already prepared/prepackaged food. The plumbing problem (challenge before last?) put a bit of a dent in my savings an I'm trying to spend less money right now so the savings/emergency fund will build back up without having to stop the extra payments I'm throwing at my mortgage. (If the emergency fund was in real trouble, I'd stop the extra mortgage payments for a couple months.) Of course, I keep finding things I want or need to buy, but I'm hoping that spending less on food will help. Which means I need to start overnight oats for tomorrow's breakfast and get some beans ready to soak tomorrow morning.

Oh, ya know what? I should drink more water. I'll add a line to the tracker for that. I think 1.5L would be good. Most days right now, I'm a little over 1L, but on bad days, I'm at less than 1L, so 1.5 should be good, but not too crazy.

Now is when it falls apart, or at least will appear to going by the spreadsheet (which I may or may not update for the rest of the week)! I have a busy weekend starting tonight, and I probably won't remember to do the things. I'm okay with that though. Doing the things is good, but getting out on weekends is better!

Helped out with SAR training on Saturday, which meant I did a little bit of hiking, a lot of sitting around under a tarp, and a little bit of hiding while trainees splinted the "broken arm" and treated the "hypothermia" on the person I was hanging out with all day. The hiding didn't go so well. I suspect the team leader was deliberately looking for me and while I should have been very difficult to see from where they were working, I wasn't hidden well enough when he walked directly over to my location. I was annoyed. He wasn't supposed to be searching for me (although he knew there had to be someone out there because we don't send people out to pretend to be lost or injured by themselves; there's always someone else there for safety). I think I've been spotted practically every time I've been hiding, so it's possible that I'm just no good at it. Maybe next time I'll try hiding 15 feet up a tree.

What you should do is keep moving. My brother in law flew a helicopter that often did SAR, and so many people actually did that. They could find the place where the person last was.😉

A great start to the challenge!

Ha! It's true that if the person keeps moving, it can be a lot harder to find them. Unfortunately for my ability to stay hidden, I was playing the role of shadow for a subject ("lost" or "injured" person), which means I had to stay within sight of them, and we were assigned an approximate location to stay until teams found us. The shadow is there to carry any extra gear the subject might need while waiting for hours to be found (one scenario might be an injured trail runner, which means they would be carrying practically nothing and the shadow needs to carry their backpack and extra gear to make the scenario realistic), make sure they stay safe and don't get hypothermia (can be a real problem if they sit in a river or it's raining, especially if teams take longer than expected to arrive),  and keep in radio contact with folks at base in case of an actual problem. And because teams (and team leaders in particular) are being evaluated on their skills, it's highly encouraged for shadows to observe while they're working with the subject. All that to say, I had to be close by and moving wasn't an option.

I bought a fly swatter a while back. I had been flicking towels at the flies and actually managed to kill a fair number of them, but the real fly swatter is so much easier! I am pleased.

The thin leather hat band on my felt cowboy hat is kind of falling apart. I've been thinking about trying to replace it and finally came up with an idea. I started a knotted friendship bracelet with a pattern that looks like desert mountains with blue sky. It's going to take forever to make it long enough to go all the way around the hat, but I'm happy with the way the first half-inch looks!

Yesterday was kind of a fail. There are some books I just shouldn't read because I will ignore all the things I need to do and stay up til all hours. And it doesn't matter one bit that I've read them before (more than once).

Boss workout was easy because in the regular workouts, I'm doing exercise variations that are a couple of versions harder than the ones assigned. I know I'm getting stronger because I'm up to seven regular pushups (on the first set) when I was only at two or three when I started Level 1. Eventually I will catch up to my actual level and in the meantime, I'm checking off all the earlier levels.

I know exactly what you mean. I have to be cautious about when I pick up novels. Short story collections are safer because they have firm breaks between sections. Right now I'm mostly reading non-fiction because I have limited time and I can put it down more easily.

Yay for progress in your bodyweight training!

Work party at SAR headquarters today, moving yard waste, knocking down a fence, fixing a giant military tent (I had lots of fun with this project), moving equipment, moving big canopy parts (because we can't set up the canopies yet), etc. The logistics people were very happy with how much we accomplished.

I did some yardwork when I got home. Hundreds of baby lilac bushes are trying to grow under my big lilac bush and I don't want them there, so I pulled up a bunch. It has been a very productive day.

Skipped jump rope last night. One leg is feeling a little off (might just be a bruise, but not sure) and the other ankle is acting up a little, so I figure a rest day is in order. And maybe no more jump squats on the days I'm not doing jump rope. If I want a harder squat variation, I can use my kettlebell.

Following along. I love the spreadsheet stuff. The SAR work sounds awesome. SAR and vehicle recovery is something MFH and I talk about doing later when we're working less but not so old we can't hack it. :)

edit: MFH is prior military and I'm a 4WD nerd, so we have SOME background to go off of. We're also fairly durable humans.

I've had a lot of fun with SAR. There would be definite benefits to being retired or semi-retired! There are a lot of missions I can't go to because I'm stuck at work, but I still get out a fair amount.

Right now, I'm mostly ground search. I keep thinking about joining the 4x4 unit as well, but so far have talked myself out of it because I still want to do mostly ground search stuff and don't want to take training away from the folks who would be more committed to doing 4x4 stuff. Although it would be awfully fun to use my truck to its full potential on a more regular basis. I should probably talk to the 4x4 folks. (Cue anxiety, even though I know a lot of the 4x4 folks and they are awesome.)
