Harriet's Year of Battle: Third Skirmish

Recommended Posts

The Third Skirmish: A Minor Melee on the Muddy Moor of Malaise, to Meliorate Moribund Morale

I am recovering not only from a slug phase, but from critical morale failure. It seems that every time I get a smallish routine going, a slug phase interrupts and I have to start from zero. I had hoped that pacing and keto could help me avoid these crashes, but no. This time I contributed to my own fatigue by attempting to cut calories and do intermittent fasting at the same time, possibly as a stress reaction to food fights.  This was ill-advised. It also led to me bingeing on sugar. Now I have to get through sugar withdrawals and cope with backlash eating on top of everything else.

My mind has cleared a little in the past couple of days, and I'm eager to return to lifting. But I'm not back to full capacity. So here are our tactics for the melee.

Axe of Strength:

quit sugar (again) since it makes me tired, depressed, and causes mindless madness eating

no calorie restriction

verrry low volume lifting

walks on non lifting days

Staff of Clarity: stay off the distractinet in the mornings

Sword of Courage: right now I need courage just for lifting so... pack my gym back the night before and just "go for a walk" in the direction of the gym on gym days. I have bought some new gym clothes, and they are pink. This is curiously enspiriting.

Reflective Shield: start developing a daily spiritual practice and reconnect with a relevant goddess.

I went to the gym and just did bench. Worked up in fives until I hit a weight I could only do for two, then backed off and did a couple more sets. Tired but happy.

Today, after many weeks of procrastination, I checked the Charite website (one of two clinics in Germany that specialises in fatigue. The other, in Munich, only treats people under 25). They are doing a brand new study in order to learn about long covid! Maybe I could be part of the study? But no--they are only taking people who have been sick less than five years. Not people who have been sick for twenty two years. They are not offering  appointments at  the moment, because they are overwhelmed. I can still apply, but they are unlikely to make time for me, especially as I do not have "infectious onset" but unknown onset. It might have been infectious--I had Epstein-Barr at some time. But I don't know when because I wasn't tested for antibodies until I was twenty. That's probably because my GP told my parents to treat me for depression, not chronic fatigue, which she didn't believe in.

I printed and filled in the intake form and sent it back to my GP. I probably won't get an appointment, but I feel it has to be done. At least I can get an official diagnosis from my GP. I was highly anxious and dithered over which boxes to check. Should I check "extremely pale"? I am, but I think it's my natural colour. I didn't check it. It was a little comforting to show Mr Harriet this list--which writes out as symptoms many of what I thought were my quirks or inconvenient weaknesses, such as inability to tolerate heat, and becoming overwhelmed at excess information, like noises--and to see him recognise the list as clearly describing me. He helped me decide what to write, and to address the envelope correctly, German style.

I avoided sugar, started my spiritual practice, ate many calories, stayed off the distractinet until 5:30pm, and went for a bonus walk.

I agree that it was worthwhile - at least you'll be in their system now if you're eligible for future studies or treatments. I've glad Mr Harriet was able to make the process less stressful :)

Proseletyzing again? Well, alright. I cannot refuse signs and omens. I will get to know her with some readings, and see if a connection is made. But I have other deities I must not neglect.

Following. Great job on checking out the fatigue clinic and sending in your form. Who knows, their next study may be a comparison of long-term fatigue pre- and post-Covid.

Thank you! The scenario I think is more likely, though, is that they will continue to do studies on long covid, but any successful treatments might be offered to those with CFS. It will be good to have an official diagnosis so there are no further hoops to jump through if a treatment becomes available. Otherwise they'll be like "lol ur a hypochondriac everyone thinks they have long covid but I'VE never seen it", "this is a phase" and "just sleep it off" and "when I was your age I had a budgerigar" and "have you tried diet and exercise?".

Wednesday:

-ate no sugar

-did no calorie restriction (On the contrary, I ate so much and so frantically I feel slightly unwell. I am backlash eating, and I don't enjoy it and can't stop. I guess it will calm down in a few days.)

-went for a walk (got some sun, yay. Saw a cute Buchfink/chaffinch)

-stayed mostly off the distractinet until 5. I will make a more permanent cold turkey block now

-packed my pink leggings for tomorrow--the new high waisted smoky pink ones with some dotty colour variations, and a plain black yoga t-shirt.

-did my spiritual practice

Thursday
No sugar
Ate all the fat/protein things, ever so slightly less frantically than yesterday
Lifted
Bonus walk
Did spirit stuff

Squat day! I’m currently trying out Alanna’s suggestion of working up to a top set then backing off. Worked up in 5kg increments from the bar, five reps each, failed my second rep at 50kg (accidental new 1RM wheee!). Did a couple more sets at 40kg x 4 (legs refused to do 5). Went home.

I’m liking this approach because it’s low volume but by going high intensity I still get a nice deadlift sparkle (endorphins? adrenaline? feeling of accomplishment?). It’s also good to have more autoregulation because following a programme is so discouraging for me given my lack of progress and many stops and starts. Instead of focusing on the actual numbers, I can chase that short sweet feeling of near maximum difficulty. So that’s my new lifting programme: gradually approach failure, flirt briefly with her, back off and admire her from a slightly safer distance, go home.

This made me laugh, but in that sad-not-creepy-clown-way. I spent way too many years explaining myself to doctors who (not at all)discreetly assumed that I was a hypochondriac or drug-seeker or just wanted attention. Would that they had merely brought up a budgie.  Cheering for you to get a proper diagnosis much sooner than later!

Those leggings are indeed quite fabulous!

Thanks! It's not reeeeally a PR... I'm sort of building up again after a long pause. But it's my heaviest weight since the long sad time of barlessness, so that's something. 🙂

Friday

No sugar, but tried some chocolate with stevia and other sweeteners. Probably not the wisest course of action but we'll see.

Ate many things

Went for walk

Got groceries and cleaned

Must now do spirit stuff and pack gym bag for tommorow.

Why is chocolate with stevia a bad choice?  Seems like a happy choice to me. Chocolate without added sugar.

Woot congrats on the rebuilding PR!! That's a great way to break in your new leggings :D

If I can make some suggestions on the autoregulation side:

Spoiler

I recommend that you don't flirt with failure tooooo often (say, more than once every 2-4 weeks per lift)! Maxing out, especially at low reps, will get really taxing very quickly. I'd guess those last few sets were all at RPE 9-10 based on your comments; RPE 7-8 is probably better for the bulk of your work.

On a similar note, if you want to use back off sets for fatigue management, I'd consider keeping them at the same number of reps (or even fewer reps if your top set was an AMRAP set). You'll probably see a drop in RPE for the first back off set and then have your RPE gradually increase as you fatigue.
