Silmarilliane's Twenty-fourth Challenge

Greetings folks, I hope you've all been keeping well. I'm starting up a new challenge after holiday and covid (at least not together) and planning on simplifying for this one. There are a few exercisey things I've got sorted as habit now and I really don't need to keep them in my challenge for the sake of it.

 

If you're interested:

Spoiler
  • Run before work (M-F) up a nearby hill: 0.7m total with ~50ft incline (stopped with covid and working back up)
  • Pilates before work (M-F) the Hundred with straight legs ribcage closure every 20 beats (stopped with covid, back up as of this morning)
  • Weight training, 3x10reps of each unless stated:
    • Monday PUSH: Bench press, Military press, Table dips
    • Wednesday PULL: Gym ring pull up angled with bent knees, 3x 10sec  Pull-up hold, Barbell rows
    • Thursday LEGS: Squat, Lunge, Romanian Deadlift
  • Pilates class Monday evenings - youtube class otherwise
  • Walking on office days: to the station and over the river at the other end (~2mile total)
  • Teethbrushing squat: held for 2+min

 

Things to improve

The exercise parts that have dropped off are cycling once a week, and keeping up my walking when I'm not in the office. I'm starting a new job in April so I won't have the river walk, but I will be getting off the tube in zone 2 and walking in which saves money and gets the steps in!

Food-wise has always been the biggest problem - eating when bored/stressed particularly and I do find counting calories (1600 a day) to be the only way to stop me eating for the sake of it. I'm very rarely hungry, I just like food.

I also started sleep improvement at the end of last year, not looking at my phone in bed, and that's totally failed of late.

 

So on to this new challenge!

 

Food

  • Under 1600 calories = 10 points per day
  • Two days in a row = 5 points

Total points = 520 but much more likely to about a third of that

 

Sleep

  • No phone before bed = 10 points per day
  • Two days in a row = 5 points

Total points = 520

 

Walking

  • Two miles walking = 10 points per day
  • Two days in a row = 5 points

Total points = 520

 

Cycling

  • Cycle once a week = 10 points

 

Total possible challenge points = 1610

To pass the challenge I need to get at least 800 points

I like how you planned a walk route to work that not only gives steps but saves money! I find it much easier to say no to extra food when I'm counting calories too.

Yes, and avoiding zone 1 in London is a significant amount of money!

Interesting starting a challenge on a Sunday! But it kept me on track tbf - since I wrote this challenge up I've stopped calorie counting in anticipation...

 

So yesterday I stayed under cals despite going to my parent's for mother's day lunch, and when I got home I did a 2 mile walk. Also did not go on my phone in bed so a full house and 30 points gained, woop!

Yesterday on all three, and I'm on track for today. My partner has commented on the phone being put away so quickly at night haha (I'm usually up way longer than him playing on my phone!)

 

Points for yesterday plus bonus = 45

Yesterday stayed on track with the phone! I know today will be over for food (work leaving do!) but I've done the walking already.

 

Points for yesterday including bonus = 45

Yesterday was indeed over and I'm feeling slightly worse for wear for my last day...

 

Points for yesterday, 15 for sleep and 15 for walking but 0 for food = 30

Boredom eating is definitely tricky. I like food, too. The food, it talks to me. It never ends.😦

The covid wasn't fun but I'm pretty much back to 100% now, just the running still slightly effected. Annoyingly I didn't catch the 'slight sore throat' my bf had in January but got bad headache, muscle pains and hacking cough 😬 I'm very glad I didn't lose my taste/sense of smell though, but the brain fog lasted a good couple of weeks, it was weird.

 

Thanks on three other points, and yes how does the food call to us so?!

Yesterday was my last day at that job and it was sad to leave some awesome peoples :(

I had a couple of ciders after with a few gooduns and got a burrito on the way home so no calorie counting. Walked my final walk over the Thames in the morning (going to miss that view - see below) and the phone was put down (before bed) as I was shattered. I'm now unemployed for a day before the new job Monday, and trying to get the willpower to count calories today!

 

Points for yesterday = 30

Total = 180

Had a nice lazy day yesterday: lie in, some reading, took things to the charity shop/bought a couple of bits and then had a good quartet rehearsal. There was food that was hard to track but I'm confident (enough 😅) that I stayed under calories which I'm glad for. It's too easy when you're not on a streak to be like, ah another day won't matter. I did have to buy a new clasp for my watch on eBay which didn't occur to me until I was in bed, but I don't think I'll count this as 'phone time' in bed as I bought it and put the phone down.

Subbing! It's really cool how you give yourself level points. I feel like I am benefitting so much fitness wise from this community but also really fun nerd things too. Quartet sounds interesting, I don't know much about it but am assuming it's musical in nature?  What do you play?  Also good luck on your new job! I hope you really enjoy it.

Thanks! I'm a little nervous for the new job but I'm sure it'll be good once I settle :)

 

Quartet is barbershop singing! It's a lot of fun making all the harmonies ❤️

 

Yesterday I got the walk in, plus the phone down before bed and also stayed within calories (as much as I could tell from eating in a restaurant after bouldering, but also bouldering was tough so I definitely burned a bunch of calories too!)

Yesterday I watched a friend run the half marathon in London and then had a belated birthday brunch (deeelish!) so totally over calories. Did a nice amount of walking though and no phone, woop!

Yesterday I went to see Supergrass, oldschool! This involved a nandos dinner but I stayed under calories, woo!

Also first day in the new job, it was miserable weather and a lot of info but got the walking in (very much not the Thames view unfortunately, and actually a bit grim...) and I got home so late there was definitely no phone before bed 👍

Yester had a quartet rehearsal, and our bass made a deelish lentil bolognese, so I brought along some homemade beer seeded rye bread that came out awesome ❤️ I love having a breadmachine, but mostly I love being able to share bread so I don't have the whole thing in my house! I don't think I went crazy with food, but I didn't count calories so... Also found a little wholefoods place near me and got some instant miso soup which is super tasty and 30 calories! Definitely useful for when I'm feeling snacky for something savoury.

I had a nice two mile powerwalk at lunch, and although I had my phone in bed, it was to set reminders and general adulting rather than games or socials. I'll still dock myself the streak points though as I definitely could have done this before getting in bed.

I made some rolls for a church potluck last week. Nice to have a chance to bake rolls, but not have them all sitting around, making me want to eat them all!

Definitely! Especially when hot from the oven mmmmm

 

Yesterday I did my 2mile lunch walk, it was crazy windy but not too cold at least. Apparently two years ago it was hot enough to sit in the garden reading in shorts! I stayed under calories, but did a bunch of stuff on my phone after getting into bed, so then played a game *sigh* - the first for ages though, and I won't let it creep back!

Total: 430

 

I have to say I'm much preferring this day-by-day approach to the challenge. I've worked by weeks for pretty much all my previous ones and it can get quite stressful thinking that far out sometimes. Also nice to be able to put stuff behind you :)

Went to a friend's for dinner (pizza and beers) so definitely didn't track calories. Got the walk in and put the phone down, but did read for a bit which was nice as I've been too tired to lately.

Points for yesterday: 10 phone, 0 food, 15 walk = 25

Met a friend for a nice walk along the old railway line from Finsbury Park to Highgate yesterday, was lovely Spring weather for it. Stayed under calories and read before bed rather than phone.
