Well, the Butterskull Ranch quest involved cleaning out a bunch of orcs  from a farmhouse .... so I took the liberty of rearranging the letters and looked up old OCR training plans and workouts.  From about 2017 .... Wow, time flies!!

The gym was empty when I arrived, which was nice.  Sometimes, it is hard to get access to the free weights, but today was my lucky day!!

Barbell Romanian  Deadlift: 60 lb x 8. 65 x 8, 70 x 8

Chest press:  70 lb x 8, 75 x 8, 75 x 8 (better than usual!!)

Dumbbell row: 15 lb x 8, 20 x 8, 25 x 8 (might be a PR)

Rope pulls: 4 from a ball, 5 from a bench

Side bends: 15 lb x 8, 20 x 8, 25 x 8

Farmer's Walk: 15 lb lap around the gym, 20 lb lap around the gym

I actually had to stop and stretch out my lats - they hit the cramping stage with the last set of side bends.

Story ....

Spoiler

We took out the orcs.  The first 5 were on the main floor of the farmhouse, eating and drinking their way through "Big Al's" stores for the winter.  They were surprised to see us but recovered and put up a strong defense.

Although we could hear more above us, they seemed to pre-occupied with their fun to notice the fight below.  So, we retreated to the cellar to recover and bandage wounds ... only to find the former sheriff tied up and beaten, lying on the dirt floor.  With healing spells and some supplies from my kit, we patched Al and the rest of us up well enough to brave the second floor.  Al insisted on joining us in the fight ... and we decided it was his right to defend his home, although he had no armor.  I loaned him my bow and pulled out my short sword.

Thereafter, 5 of us made short work of the remaining orcs on the upper floor.  All that left was the sad task of burying the ranch hands who had perished in the initial attacks and burning the bodies of the orcs.

Al was so grateful for the assistance and the return of his horses that he made us a gift of his old mithril chain mail.  He claims he will never need it again, although we tried to convince him otherwise .... especially since the dragon is abroad and ---- as recent history indicates --- the area is no longer safe from wandering monsters.  In the end, he did agree to pack up and return to Phandalin as soon as he could.

Reluctantly, we parted ways with not only Alfonse Kalazorn but with the scout, Will as well, since he insisted on continuing onto Triboar.  It will be three days' journey back to Phandalin if all goes well.

I'm sorry about your gym! I hope the transition to the other gym won't be too bad for you.

This is finals week at the college; so I might not get to everything that I drew before Friday.  Friday, I am going on an adventure.  I signed up for a sort of adult Girl Scouts event through the Iowa DNR.  If students get done with the Friday morning final quickly, I might even make it to my fishing workshop.  (I did buy my fishing license, including trout stamp.)

Plan for the week is to go back to Phandalin and pick up the next quest.

Monday: Plains - walk or run - DONE

Tuesday: Plains and attack by hostile scout

Wednesday: Gotta cross that ford again (rowing)

Thursday: in town and assault by a mercenary

Friday: crossing the ford again!

Saturday: mountains

Sunday: forest and a bugbear

Today, our adventurers traveled through the plains, via the road between Phandalin and Triboar ... and were attacked by a Scout or two.  Booyah!

It was a nice day; so I walked from my office to downtown for lunch with hubby.  We have a favorite sandwich shop that makes awesome paninis.  I really love their Blackberry Bomber ... bacon, cheese, smoked turkey, and blackberry jam!!    With iced tea and a few chips.  Heaven!!

And I went to CrossFit this afternoon/early evening.   Talked with one of the coach/owners, and she's just so exhausted with regular job and trying to cover a couple of hours each day of coaching .... which is not adding to their income.  So, we're all supportive but also looking at ways to keep going with CrossFit .... or at least a little accountability group that meets in the same space and time.

I set a new PR for front squat and strict shoulder presses:  45 lbs!!!

Spoiler

Passing through Conyberry, we were approached by  a dirty, white and black dog that slowly approached, head down and tail wagging uncertainly.  It had obviously not eaten in a while; so I decided to share some of my dried meat with the canine.  It was friendly and in good condition, the sort of dog that would be set guarding sheep or a farm; so we figured it had probably belonged to one of the townsfolk before they were attacked.  Hard to know if its owner was dead or fled ... but I couldn't leave it there to starve.  So, we coaxed it to follow along with a little more food, hoping to be able to find its owner in Phandalin.

As we started setting up camp that evening,  however, we learned the value of having a watchdog.  A small group of bandits tried to take advantage of our inattention by rushing out of the forest edging the road.  But alerted by her barking, we were able to defend ourselves easily.

I walked again yesterday ... to and from lunch downtown, which means I got about 1.2 miles in.  As well as the pacing around the classroom while people are taking the final.

I am talking myself into going on my adventure.  I often get cold feet the day of the event because of some detail.  This time  ... it's bunk beds.  I really don't want to sleep in the upper bunk, but I did notice that there is a couch in the suite if I get stuck with the upper bunk.

Story ....

Spoiler

Khrum was glum as he recounted how the caravan was attacked a couple of days into the trek north.  A pack of undead skeletons had nearly overwhelmed the escort.  If he and a few of the traders had not joined in the fight, the party might have been lost.  As it was, they were back in Phandalin, and most of the injured were scattered between the inn and the Lionshield headquarters.

Jorge look grim as he picked up the healer's kit.  "I'd better go see to the wounded ... " he announced as he headed toward the door.

"I'll join you," Osborne  offered as she began to follow.

"Wait!", I called.  "Here's some of the Goodberries ...."  I handed her the pouch from this morning's spell casting.   It had become a habit, even when we were in town.

Khrum began to stand up to join the two, wincing as he laid his hand on his great axe.

"Hang on there .... let me see that arm ...." I paused a moment to get permission before rolling up his sleeve and wincing at the sight of the infected wound.  It was not deep, but with the sleeve out of the way, I could feel the corruption of the undead settling in.  It was not bad yet, but it would have to be treated.  If all the wounded were in similar shape, Jorge and Osborne were going to be busy.    "OK, sit back down and let's see if this works ...."

As Khrum complied, I took a deep breath, centered myself, and simply prayed "Please ....."    After a moment, a sense of peace settled on me, and when it was gone, I looked up, unwrapping the bandage on Khrum's arm.  The skin was healed with a jagged scar, but the site was cool to the touch and felt entirely healthy.

"You .... glowed ....." Khrum whispered.

I went despite last-minute jitters.

Yeap, I got stuck with the top bunk.  No one would switch with me.  The couch was horrible.  I couldn't find an organizer to help me find a better sleeping arrangement.  So, I left and drove home.  Good hot dinner and a comfy bed.  And then I got up early and drove back the next morning for the Saturday workshops.

I am really glad that I went.   Three half-day seminars were great:

  • I had forgotten how much I enjoyed fishing as a kid.  Just off the shore, catching sunfish with worms.  Catch and release ... great time.  A review of knots and gear was helpful, and we got a small set of pan-fishing tackle as part of the workshop.  Now, I have a fishing license and am only 6 miles from a county park with a "lake" (wide, slow section of river) that has a couple of designated fishing areas.
  • Birding.  One of the best tips was to get the Merlin app for identifying bird calls.  Got two different bird guides and a suggestion for a set of binoculars that really worked for me on the hike.
  • Hiking.  Ok, this was almost a workshop on what NOT to do.  The 4 mile hike felt a bit like "Gilligan's Island", and we got a bit lost and walked about 5.5 miles.  One of our group got really lost and separated from the group.  It all turned out well on a nice day.  But I might spring for a hiking pole or two, because they did end up useful in crossing streams and climbing banks.

I decided not to go to the morning seminar on nature crafts.  The camp is a hour and a half away, and I'm bushed.  Lots to do around the house and garden here.

I am getting a little bored with the D & D campaign idea and so,  I am changing it up and simplifying it a bit.

Sticking with the terrain cards, but I am adding hand-made cards for strength training and fun events/activities.  Nothing special ... just text on white card stock.

Today, I walked a mile and graded finals.

I need to get back into logging food regularly.  I let it lapse for Mother's Day weekend and then for the camping trip.   And then ..... today should have seen me back on the wagon  ....

Sorry about the mishaps on your fishing and hiking get away. Glad you were able to go home and come back!  I like my hiking poles. The drawback of them is they can be sort of hassle to carry with me when I don't need them. But, they are really helpful on steep hills going up and down. If I have to step up high over something, they are really nice for balance. I struggled a bit with knee pain on steep hikes, and they help with that.

Today's strength training card was Archery .... appropriate for my ranger.  I have not found an archery range that is less than an hour away ... so it was gym time and upper body training:

One arm dumbbell row: 15 lb x 8, 20 lb x 8

Dumbbell shrug: 2 x 15 lb x  8

One-arm side laterals: 5 lb x 8, 10 lb x 8

Lat pulldowns: 87.5 lb x 8, 90 lb x 8

Chest press: 70 lb x 8

Bench dips: 8

Bicep curls: 5 lb x 8, 10 lb x 8

Bent-over flys:  2 x 5 lb x 8

Overhead triceps extension (each hand): 5 lb x 8, 8 lb x 8

I started light on some exercises I haven't done in a while.

Walked about 3 miles today.

Not bad for a day spent grading finals!!

And I bought a light-weight fishing pole.  I hope to go fishing later this week when the weather and work permit.

Today is raining; so I might get in a walk or do some stationary biking.  And some shoulder mobility work after all of the upper body strength training ....

Story ....

Spoiler

We have been traveling for two, mostly uneventful, days due north through the Neverwinter Woods.  Our small band is escorting supplies to the loggers working the south side of the river, a dangerous assignment in the best of times, but the dragon and the disruption he has caused, the trip is even more perilous.  Hence, Harbin is offering a reward of 100 gold for success.

Our adventuring band has grown as a result.

Khrum elected to travel with us through the woods rather than try to head up the road to Neverwinter again.  The Lionshield cartel loaned him a small spell book to copy during the trip, in recognition of his part in fighting off the undead from the failed caravan last week.  Once he has made his copy, he is to send the original back with us as he follows the river down to the great city to begin his studies properly.

The white and black dog seems to have adopted me, and I have named her Shep.  We could not find her owners in Phandalin, and she responds to the name well enough.  We are working on figuring out how to work together, Shep and I.  At times, we seem to read each other’s thoughts.

The third addition is a half-elf named Kari, who Harbin insisted should accompany us.  She has the natural grace of her kind and claims to be an excellent shot with her shortbow, which has helped with foraging for food during our trek.  Since Harbin gave us a detailed list of the exact supplies he shipped north, we won’t be able to supplement our rations if we get lost or are otherwise delayed.

The track has been a little difficult to follow with the lush growth of spring here in the woods.  And I think we may have deviated from the main path a couple of times.  Thankfully, the ox – named Vincent – is a steady, strong, reliable beast who simply plods along as he is led or driven from the cart.

The only odd encounter happened as we entered the woods.  A large boar stood in a clearing a little ways off the main path, just watching us.  This behavior seemed odd and so Khrum, and Osborne … although she did so out of his sight, cast a spell to detect magic.  Neither detected magic in the boar, although I am sure that something is amiss there since the beast should have fled or tried to threaten us off, but they did both narrow in on the amulet I picked up at Gnomegard.

It is not evil magic, because Jorge or I would have noticed, but it seems to hold a spell from the enchantment school of wizardry.  Looking at Shep, I wonder about its properties …..

Today, we drove to the eastern part of Iowa and the sandstone bluffs around Cedar River.  It was a very fun trip, but WOW the elevation changes on the long trail were major!!  100 feet of elevation change in the very steep staircase sort of climb.  After 5 (2 each up and down and then one long uphill on a side trail) of those, I was pretty much done.    It was a good way to clear a "mountain" terrain card.  😰

Still good birding!!  We saw white pelicans over the river .... which was a first for my lifetime list.
