Silmarilliane's Twenty-sixth Challenge

Recommended Posts

Good morrow fellow nerds :)

I completed my last challenge successfully and levelled up. I also found having negative points for overeating was a good incentive, so I'll be keeping that going. I have found that I haven't actually been losing any weight though, and also I have been very lazy on the cycling - I think I went once in the whole last challenge! So, I'm largely keeping this challenge the same and making some tweaks based on last time. I've taken weight and measurements today and am really hoping I can shift some body fat this time. I'm going to list out the days I think will involve too much food so I can get an idea of what's coming up this challenge:

  • 29/06/2022: cocktail night - can be sensible in the day
  • 01/07/2022-03/07/2022: Boardgame weekend away - tricky as this will be likely lots of beer/pizza/bbq etc
  • 16/07/2022-21/07/2022: Holiday in Rome - umm, yeah
  • 23/07/2022: birthday BBQ - highly unlikely to track or be sensible

Ok, I totally hadn't factored in the amount of time I would be in 'overeating' situations. I think the best way is going to have to be to balance out the foody days with extra exercise really, and not worry too much about restricting holiday fun. As such I will add points for cycling/extra HIIT type exercise and give minus points for not doing any per week.

The Challenge

FOOD

  • Under 1600 calories a day = 10pts
  • Two days in a row = 5pts
  • Not counting but staying sensible OR only overeating one meal = 0pts
  • Overeating the whole day for the sake of it = -10pts

Total possible = 520pts

SLEEP

  • No phone scrolling before bed = 10pts
  • Two days in a row = 5pts

Total points = 520pts

WALKING

  • Two+ miles walking per day = 10pts
  • Two days in a row = 5pts

Total points = 520pts

OTHER EXERCISE

  • Any cycling in a day = 5pts
  • Any additional specific exercise (HIIT, Zumba etc) in a day = 5pts
  • Week without doing at least two additional exercises = -10pts

ETA: 1000+ points = success

So I did start yesterday - after eating ALL THE FOOD at a bbq on Saturday (they had an ice cream bar as well as a table of puddings, and then got the woodburning pizza oven out later in the evening...) We popped to drop off some father's day things and then I made myself go on a walk - annoyingly google timeline says I only did 1.9 miles, but I'm counting it, as my first day starting back. Last week wfh I had a couple of days my only walking was popping to the shops. Not good. I counted calories which was quite nice after a week off, and stopped me snacking, and I read instead of phone before bed.

Yesterday: 🚶‍♀️10pts, 🥗 10pts, 📵 10pts

Total: 30pts

Need to have a think about when to put in the extra exercises, and I also need to adjust my bike seat and pump up the tires...

I hope the negative points work. You said in your last challenge you were discouraged by the thought that you might have to count calories forever. That might be true, but I also read something recently that interested me, namely that we can pull any one of three levers: how much we eat, what kinds of foods we eat, and the timing of when we eat. If counting calories doesn't work, perhaps you might like to experiment with types or timing of food. Just a possibility. In the meantime, good luck with the counting and countering the overeating occasions.

That's interesting - and I think I've covered all bases over the years haha. I had previous challenges where I tried to make everything from scratch - lunch was home made soft cheese in homemade bread (made with the whey from the cheese), homemade chocolate peanut protein balls and home-popped popcorn. It was good but a lot of effort, and now I have a hybrid where I make as much as I can from scratch and avoid packaged food with too many ingredients/additives. I did also try intermittent fasting (5-2 and food-window) but found I ate SO MUCH on the 'days off' or 'food window' that it negated any good otherwise 😅 However I have learned from this that two meals a day works for me, so I tend to have coffee in the morning and then lunch and early dinner. My issue is holding myself accountable, which is the tough part (and why writing challenges on the internet works for me!)

---

Having written out the challenge yesterday I was having a bit of a think of how to improve and what exercises I can fit in - tube/rails strikes this week means I'm likely wfh all week, and so will do a lot less walking - Tuesdays I usually walk 5-7 miles with commute and chorus so I'll likely do an exercise video tonight. I also got home from pilates yesterday with 109 calories left for the day, and after debating a few options I realised I wasn't actually hungry and had a glass of squash instead (homemade lemon!)

Wfh all week makes me more aware of not much exercise so I joined my friend's online pilates class last night and it was tough! Even more achey today haha - my calves feel like treetrunks (in a good way). Have only done 1.5miles walking today as I only had a 25min gap so need to do some extra after work today.

Umm.... not very good cycling 😅 I had hand-down bikes as a kid, and borrowed one in my late teens for a bit and then near enough 20 years went by with minimal cycling. Last year my partner and I got each other bikes for our birthdays and I decided to get one that was pretty and had a basket on the front. Not practical for commuting or off-roading, but it gets me to my friend's house down the road quicker than walking! I need to adjust the saddle higher and pump the tyres up a bit (and actually ride it more...) Mainly I have quite bad confidence on it, which is why I try and make myself cycle each week.

---

Yesterday was pretty basic wfh - I had virtual boardgames after work and thought 250 calories remaining would be enough for a 330ml can of belgian beer. It was not, so I settled for a Tiny Rebel Lo-Fi 99cal can. I only had little gaps in the day so did a 1.5mile walk and then another 0.8 after work. I did go on my phone in bed to reply to a friend's messages - we usually send them in chunks so it takes a while to reply and therefore is not great to be doing in bed. I internally-debated whether this should count as 0 points but I also thought, well if I'm going to do that, I may as well play a game but then I told myself that was silly talk and just went to sleep. As such I will give myself 10pts for this, but lose my streak.

I'm out to an Elvis spectacular screening this evening and my immediate thought was 'let's get food out before' and then decided that I really don't need to, especially as I've had a really good week so far. It's my sister's birthday Sunday and there's going to be cake and tea things so I'd rather save for that.

So the Elvis Spectacular had few cocktails and snacks, which I was not aware of in advance! I ate well throughout the day and left enough calories for some popcorn but then had three cocktails, popcorn and chocolate buttons... Was a good fun night though and I don't feel that bad about it despite feeling very full. There wasn't a lot of veggie snacks and they offered me chips but I said no as I didn't need them.

Back on track yesterday, had an eye test so got the walk in heading up there. Had a bit of a panic about the amount of little life admin things I have on my reminder list, which I largely ignored yesterday as I didn't really look at my phone. How do people remember to do things and actually get them done without constant reminders?!

No idea. I assume before we had phones and computers we also had better memory. Maybe the constant reminders actually make us forgetful. Like a limb in a splint.

This is a very good point - I heard always using maps/google maps is shrinking the spacial awareness part of human brains, so it doesn't seem that big of a leap.

Hello there! A few questions that I have so far:

1. How do you make the homemade lemon squash?

2. How was Elvis?

:D

Oh hai!

1. Recipe from a lady who makes jams, chutneys etc for church fairs!

Slice two lemons (skin/seeds and all) and put in a biggish pan with 500g white sugar and 1tbsp food grade citric acid, then cover with boiling water

Boil up and then simmer until the lemons are translucent

Strain and bottle

How much water just determines how much you need to water it down afterwards - I tend to make it on the goopy side so it takes up less bottle space! You only need a splash of it in a glass of water, and you know all the ingredients :)

2. Yes, I really enjoyed it, though that may have been the free margarita and white russians that were provided with it! I do also love Baz Luhrmann in general. A couple of things that annoyed me a bit - Tom Hanks in prosthetics with an accent is just Tom Hanks in prosthetics with an accent, and I don't understand why not just get someone that shape/size with the accent to play the part... Also, Elvis had quite a distinctive nose (likely from the suggested Cherokee heritage) which the actor didn't have, and with THanks having so much prosthetic, I don't get why they didn't do the same for Elvis, who has a much more recognisable face SURELY.

Office day and chorus quartet night which was very fun, and meant lots of walking. No additional exercise (I don't count the walking) but I managed to finish off Monday's weights before work in the morning which is good - hoping to get Weds weights in during the day today if I can as I have to head out for someone's birthday cocktails this eve straight from work. The weather at the mo is def not suited for cycling, so am hoping Friday is clearer for that, or I'll have to do a youtube exercise vid or something.

Read before bed - I'm re-reading the Wheet of Time and have been chugging through to get to a certain bit that happens with Nynaeve, and fiiinnnnallly got there yesterday, woot!

So the road trip involved maltesers and Charleston chews and we had BBQ and beer for dinner. I did eat pretty sensibly in the day though but definitely didn't restrict the snacking to the evening. I'm going to give myself -5 rather than 0 or -10 as that makes sense in my head. I did not get chance to do any cycling or my weights though as I ran out of time. Ah well.

Played some more games and had a little march to the beach by myself (rain) and ate some fresh made pizza in the outside wood burner pizza oven (they are amazing). Got home early afternoon so I did a little cycle and did the remaining amount of walking I needed, and also read before bed instead of phone. Was very much looking forward to getting back to calorie counting, which is stupid because surely I could have just eaten less food at the weekend. Ahh holiday brain!

My word today has disappeared, and just realised I've hardly drunk any water today... no wonder I'm a bit headachey... Swift update and will have to check in with others tomorrow, eek.
