Chris-Tien Jinn
I've been contemplating the goals for the next challenge for a couple of hours now .... no lie .... and I conclude that I just need to START and refine as the week (and challenge) goes by. THEME: School for Magic-Users Because: I'm starting my (hopefully) last year as a professor. Classes start August 25th (my birthday), but preparation officially starts August 1st. I'm expecting my first grandson (they found out in the amniocentesis) in early February, and I feel the need to learn the updated theories of childcare ... and a whole host of skills (baby CPR, for instance) ... and explore how to be a fun grandma (which is a long-term quest that will show up as a battle log soon) I've been interested in trying out the D & D Strixhaven campaigns The Hero's Journal Magic of Istoria is also tempting me I want to re-read the Harry Potter series. Yes, the movies are good, but they leave out so many details!!! A few things that I know I will include: Use the WW program to lose 3 pounds this challenge (should land at about 157 to 158) Workout daily, using the Pressure Gauge system to set daily expectations. Most of the challenge should be in the green zone unless I get sick (COVID-19 is surging locally) Read the book Today's Grandmother .... by Angela Bowen (set page goals per day) More to come!! 7 Quote Level 63 Human ... Good use of time, really. I'm glad that it's available in Spotify. It was interesting to hear her and Jordan Syatt talk about strength training vs. CrossFit and how the goals differ. Also, a good reminder that some goals conflict with each other and that you can't do everything at once. 3 Quote Level 63 Human ... Yes, I bailed after they started the transition over to selling the personal training. Kinda felt like I'd gone to one of those "informational seminars" that end up selling condos .... but the idea behind matching plans to stress or time limits is a good one. I'm loving summer in the green zone, but I'll be at yellow starting next week and will need to be ready for the red zone days. Yesterday's CF was solid, and I pushed hard enough to have sore shoulders this morning. I skipped the push jerk because we'd just done a big upper body workout the day before. Substituted assisted pull ups instead ... so, didn't really give the upper body a break. 🤦♀️ For the first 5 sets, I used green + black bands. The last set, I had to switch back to green + purple ... which is hugely easy. I need to really look at our bands set and see what's between black and purple. Today ... YOGA was great, but my shoulders are still DOMS city. I think I'll walk/run outside instead of CrossFit. 4 Quote Level 63 Human ... To be fair, I think NF Coaching actually sounds like a great product, though it's not a great fit for me right now. The preparing for amber and red days idea I love, I'd never considered it before. Amber: 20+ minutes of WoD .... but whenever I can fit it in. CrossFit often got derailed last academic year when a student came to my office as I was heading out to workout. With my WOD Generator app, I can pick a short WOD and specify what equipment I have available. One of two ways: 1. hold them together as I loop them over the bar on the rack. It works pretty well, although I NEED a box to stand on as I awkwardly put my foot into both bands at once. 2. preferred: some sections of the weight rack are sufficiently narrow and have the upper bar low enough that you can loop the bands over the J-hooks, which makes it super easy to use multiple bands and not have to be quite so coordinated in getting into position. This is a photo of the section we use for not-called-CrossFit-anymore workouts: Adding video because it came up in Facebook and made me smile. 2 Quote Level 63 Human ... What is your plan for amber and red days, if you don't mind me asking? Without knowing the exact definitions of amber and red days, I have prepared for bad days in several ways in the past. It can be as easy as always have some leftovers in the freezer so that you don't have to cook on a bad day, or splitting todo-lists into "have-to"s, "should"s and "would be nice"s. E.g. laundry would be nice if there's just a full load in the basket, it would be a should if you only have a few days worth of clothes left, and a have to if you're out of clean underwear. On a green day you do all tasks, on red only the "have to"s and on other days something in between. 22 hours ago, Chris-Tien Jinn said: Strong Older Women: watch Harry Potter movies (Professor McGonagall FTW) McGonagall is awesome! 4 Quote Link to comment
Chris-Tien Jinn
So, yesterday, I was hit with a migraine and let myself have an amber day on the workout front. Did 20 minutes of rowing at my usual recovery pace (so ... 3.1 km). The rest of the day was pretty much in the green. I started the Today's Grandmother book (6 pages), did well on the nutrition front, and read a blog post about a 68-year-old American Ninja Warrior (https://oldladygains.com/blogs/women-you-should-meet/meet-ginny-maccoll) I love her attitude when she hits a block ... that she can't do it YET. 6 Quote Level 63 Human ... Nothing too radical there, but it did push me to write down the plan for the low points. All too often, I do simply stop doing anything, telling myself that I'll get back to it as soon as (whatever the interruption is) is done ... and before long a week or more has gone by.
