Elastigirl Enjoying The Summer Vibes

Right now, I'm enjoying the summer, spending time in my garden,  and catching those summer vibes. This challenge is going to be pretty straight forward.

Maintenance

Last challenge I just focused on my eating skills , and trying to maintain weight. I don't mind if I gain a bit ( muscles ) but I was gaining a bit more than I like, and the trend was going up. I'm going to keep focus on my eating skills, with one small tweak.

I've gotten back into the habit of an evening snack. I think if I ditched this, I would be better off. I don't work really well with strict rules, so I am just going to put it as a guideline, with one stipulation:

I can choose to eat something in the evening after dinner if I want, but if I do, I need to write it down, and record the calories, and also the why I am eating it

eating skills I'm also practicing

eating afternoon snack without  a screen

pausing before seconds, extra meal

stopping half way through a meal and thinking about satiety

stopping when full

Life:

The habit of spending some time on Monday writing out my weekly goals, and each morning writing out the goals, is super helpful. I will continue that.

Garden is going great. I will work in the garden. Make foods with the stuff I grow.

Fitness:

Continue with my zone 2 rowing  4 days a week (ish)  and my sprinting once a week

Just started with the GMB and I will work on that

walking- I will enjoy that. I will also recognize that I am working in the garden, and rowing, so even if I don't hit my 10,,000 steps a day, I don't need to feel guilty. Walking 10,000 steps a day is great, but so is other movement, and I don't need to feel guilty about not hitting it.

Today:

DId 20 minutes at 28 spm on the rower in the morning. Then I did my first session in GMB. It  was just an intro to all the movement. Sort of similar to NF, but enough different to mix it up. On rings, we are working on the inverted hang. It's been forever since I did that, and I was a little nervous, but it came back fairly easy.  Also working on L-sit. I enjoy GMB because it has some skill work mixed in. They also do stretching and mobility as part of it, which is good, because otherwise I skip it.

GMB does shrimp squats instead of pistol work. I'm not worried about losing ground on the pistol though. GMB has you do  a  flow of front leg lift, to back to shrimp. It's pretty intense balance work, so it will help with the pistol. I don't think it does any dips though. I may add them in once a week, just to maintain the work I've done.

We are in a heat wave, so not a lot of walking. I get some just by wandering around watering all the things. Took a short walk last night , and will do so again tonight. Right now I'm typing this challenge in our bedroom, which is where we have our portable AC

Sounds like a solid plan.  And yea.  Summer = no tracking.

Thanks!

Most of the time, we have a nice breeze and really pleasant weather, so we don't need AC. Usually, about 1- or 2 days we get  to above 90, and then every few years we get a whole week or so in the 90's. This is one of those weeks. Having  AC in  the bedroom makes a huge difference. If I am able to sleep, the world is a much brighter place.

I have just accepted that tracking does not come easily to me and that I will never be consistent at it for the long term. I've found that I don't really need it all the time, though, and that when I start to go off the rails, a month of tracking gets me...back on track (sounds weird, but couldn't think of a better way to say it) and then I don't have to worry about it. It's a tool that is helpful when I need it, and not necessary when it's not.

Hmm, that's an interesting point. I put tracking in the all or nothing category. Which has been not very successful! Maybe I'd be better off  just doing it when I feel like I need the focus to get me back on track, instead of thinking I always have to do it.

I think the trick to long term tracking is to have a boring diet without much variation.  And where there is variation, to keep it in manageable chunks.

I do find boring much easier to track. But, that's what burned me out of tracking. Not only eating without variation, but I missed cooking. I enjoy experimenting and trying new recipes, so as a long term strategy this doesn't work for me. But, when I go back into deficit mode, I'm going that way. Also thinking of just choosing two breakfasts and switching between them.

  • Elastigirl changed the title to Elastigirl Enjoying The Summer Vibes

Sunday was my adult son's birthday.  I made him a recipe from my Disney World Cookbook. It was Batuun Ronto Wraps from Galaxy's Edge. Wraps with sausage and pork, with a spicy slaw and spicy sauce. Used a couple new ingredients to me Sumac and Szecuchan peppercorn. It turned out super good. And not very hard. It will be made again. My son liked it too!

Tonight I made spaghetti.  I topped it with some air fryer cooked zucchini, mushrooms and onions, and basil. The basil was from our garden. I used jarred sauce, but put in the basil from our garden. The zucchini was also from our garden.

Did the zone 2 rowing workout. I'm doing 30 minutes now, which is great. But that's about 40 minutes including cool down and warm up, and  I need to adjust my morning routine a bit (meaning take less time staring at the computer)

Did the GMB workout. The legs part is great. Jumping,  back scale work, and step back lunge. I feel like I'm getting a well rounded  workout. Arms feel a bit easy. No chin ups, just pulling prep work. And kneeling push ups. I was feeling a bit burned out from arm work with NF, and like I needed a break from constant DOMS. So, for a week I think it's fine to scale back, but if the difficulty doesn't increase, I may just increase it anyway. GMB is great, but sometimes they err in being too easy. I mean it's hard for a general progam to fit everyone's needs. But, I know enough now of what my abilities are that I can adjust as needed.

i love sumac, good reminder to use it again :)

It’s true that gmb takes it sort of easy, but I do think it delivers. Jaap did the full rings 1 program when he already had a muscle up and levers etc, so he was doing assisted pull-ups for weeks, which seemed ridiculous.. but he improved so much, unbelievably lots.

Hum .... They might actually address some of the physical movements that I think are part of being a cool grandmother.  Did you sign up for the paid program, or do you put things together from the free resources?

Most workouts are pretty easy to adjust as needed, but sometimes my brain burns out on all that and I just want to follow a program without thinking about it too hard.

Yeah, that's how I manage it - I eat the same thing every day for the most part :D

Set my alarm 15 minutes earlier today. I was feeling like I wanted to do more things, and was running out of time. Figured that would be more time, without making it super hard to adjust. It was cooler last night, so going to bed on time was easier.

Did a 25 minute row. Also went on a walk with my friend.  Then worked in the vegetable garden. Did a ton of weeding. Trying an experiment. I get tons of weeds. And garden Instagram accounts suggest mulching to prevent weeds. One said you could just use yard clippings. Well, we have lots of huge ferns in our yard. So, I cut back several that were overtaking our driveway and laid them down in the garden.

Now I'm going to go freeze some blueberries and zucchini. Tomorrow's plan is to make blueberry cobbler with the blueberries from our garden.

Oh,I also did an ab workout. I did one from Darebee. But, I'm tired of the constant stream of new exercises. They have a video that demonstrates it, but I would rather just do it and be done. I made a list of several exercises. Twice a week, I'll pick 2 or 3 and do 3 or so sets.

Generally works pretty well as long as you don't have Bermuda grass.

Back in Iowa I used to put 3 or 4 layers of newspaper on top of my whole 10x10 garden plot then cover it with grass clippings (rye and fescue).  Really helped with the weeding, and it seemed to keep the soil from drying out.  Not sure I could do that now here in Oklahoma with the wind and aggressive lawn grasses and the death of print media. :D

If you're looking to have some spontaneity/variety in it you could assign them a number and roll a dice to determine which to do.

Interested to hear if the fern clippings stop the weeds. I have bindweed growing up through my lawn and it's so hard to get rid of...
