Sober September and probably longer

Recommended Posts

As I cut out alcohol, I expect my motivation to be 100x better than it was last month when I was trying to just cut back. Which is why I failed the last challenge.

Mondays: Morning 🦮 walk (training), Write/Read 9:30am-6pm, Strength 🏋🏻‍♀️

Tuesdays: Morning 🦮 walk (training), Write/Read 9:30am-6pm, Rest

Wednesdays: Morning 🦮 walk, Write/Read 9am-5pm, 🧗🏻‍♀️ Climb with in-laws

Thursdays: Morning 🦮 walk, Write/Read 9am-5pm, 🧘🏻‍♀️Yin Yoga 🕉️

Fridays: Morning 🦮 walk (training), Write/Read 9:30am-6pm, Strength 🏋🏻‍♀️

Weekends: Do SOMETHING active, extra long 🦮 walk (with training), hike 🥾, swim 🏊🏻‍♀️ etc.

Will start running once temps start getting below 60 in the mornings so that my exercise induced asthma is not so bad.

Let's see how this goes...

Morning of Day 1:

Our walk was just under a mile since we came across an opportunity to work on dog reactivity. Kids and their parents with their dogs were standing on the corner waiting for the school bus. We kept a distance and I gave her praise when I could get her to sit and look at me. Take a step closer, sit, look at me, praise, step closer... When she reacted we turned back and started over again. I think I am going to try to make this a regular thing, knowing what time this group of dogs are there every morning. It won't be every morning but it will be maybe 3 times a week. However, this is at 8:30am, so I may need to adjust my work schedule. (edited main post)

Came into work a bit late today because I had to get an oil change.

Trying to work up the motivation to write now by making this Day 1 post.

Today is Day 6 of sobriety.

Will be doing some strength today to make up for yesterday. Since it was labor day, my gym was closed. Climbing tomorrow. 💪🏻

Writing goals for today:

- Finish a manuscript review

- Set deadlines for subsections of my dissertation

- Start working on oral presentation that I will be giving on the 23rd

Following with similar goals! We’re going to just weekends on the alcohol, but thinking about cutting it altogether. Honestly, though, I think dessert is the bigger culprit for me. 😂

Yeah I realized that I need to totally cut it out in order to understand how it effects me. My mood has already started to improve.

I almost pulled into the bar on the way home because I always crave a cold alcoholic beverage after a workout, but just as I was pulling into the parking lot, a wave of guilt washed over me, just in time. I went to the diner on the other side of the strip mall instead to have dinner and an iced tea. Very proud of myself for not caving so quickly.

Following along. I will also be doing this challenge dry.

Congrats on not caving! It's all about taking those small steps consistently.

Following! You’ve got some great goals.

Alcohol is definitely a boss battle for me also. Here to cheer you on for all the great progress so far!

Also sounds like you’re doing great things with the doggy training. 3 years is around the age where my GSD was actually a pleasure to walk slightly more often than not (omg he was such a bratty teenager). Enjoy your walkies and training experiences!!

Holy cow and well met, fellow sober Druid Ranger. I’ve been sober since April 2015, and I can testify that it’s a challenging path, but the rewards are unlike anything else I’ve ever seen. Welcome to the Way of Serenity.

I like the walk pattern that you’re establishing in the morning, and taking your dog (and the training); I’ve found that a morning walk really does wonders for my mindset—the (many!) physical benefits are added bonus.  I hope you find similar benefits.

Drop into my DM or my thread if you ever want to talk about the steps. :)

Morning of Day 2:

Getting closer to my wake up time goal of 7am. Woke up at 7:30ish so the walk was cut short.

Kind of sucks because 🦮 was very energetic this morning. She did well with reacting to 🐿️ though

*Today is Day 7 of sobriety*

Work was a bit frantic when I got there, setting back my writing goals.

Going to the climbing gym today with the in-laws, assuming I can get out of work early enough. 😣

Priorites:

- set deadlines for the subsections of my dissertation (Didn't get to this yesterday)

- Finalize graphs for my second first-author manuscript

- Feed my leukemia cells

- Reading homework for class tomorrow

Morning of Day 3:

I was so tired last night I went to bed an hour early.

Woke up at 6:15am at first when my dog had to be let out. Then went straight back to bed until 7:15am.

Got a full 2 mile walk today. A few dog reaction incidents. But still better about squirrels.

Today is Day 8 of sobriety.

Yin Yoga after work.

Goals of the day:

- Finish reading homework (2 hrs)

- Meeting at 12pm, class at 1:30pm - 3:00pm

- Work on dissertation (2 hrs)

Edit: Forgot to mention that the climbing yesterday went really well! I write it off to being sober for a week. Something to remind myself as I go through this month and consider continuing sobriety afterwards.

I know it's a part of life but I got a job rejection today. 😒

Not taking a shot of whiskey when I get home is going to be a difficult task. Might stop and get some of that alcohol-removed wine (Fre). Not until after my Yin Yoga session though. Hopefully that helps a bit.

Sorry to hear about the job rejection. Hopefully the yoga helped center you a bit ❤️

Morning of Day 4:

Yin yoga class was canceled last night so I did a session on my own using Down Dog at home. Was very nice, especially with 🐶 kisses when I was on my back. Stopped at Kroger while picking up Chinese take out to get the Fre wine (alcohol removed).

Which makes today is Day 9 of sobriety.

No morning walk because I had to spend the morning getting things ready for a work picnic. Threw the ball for a bit in the back yard instead. My husband will probably exercise her when he gets home from work. Gave her two chicken treats instead of just one when I left for work as compensation.

Going to the gym to do a strength workout after the work picnic.

Goals for today:

- Work on Ch.2 of my dissertation when I get home this evening, maybe a little bit

Day 5:

Took the pup out for a 4 mile hike through our local state park. Didn't seem to tire her out in the slightest but it sure worked me good.

Great thing to do to celebrate Day 10 of sobriety though!

Goal for today:

- Work on Section 1.1 of dissertation (hard to focus when my legs feel like Stonehenge)
