Shello Trims the Fat (but not the donuts. Or the stadium food. Oh, or the food trucks!)

My social calendar is buzzing this challenge.  And class has started up again for the fall and I am teaching a second class (online thankfully).
 

Being so busy gets in the way of fitnessing so for this challenge I’m allowing a lot of grace for the fitness goal.  We’ll walk when we have the time. Maybe I’ll sub in some other things too. I’ve been feeling stiff in the back recently. Maybe I’ll yoga.  
The goal is to try to hit a calorie burn of 2400 according to my Fitbit most days. I wont make it every day. Hence grace. 
 

Fitness

A lot of the engagements on my calendar either involve food or interrupt our normal meal routine.  It is apple cider donut season after all!   We’re also trying out as many food trucks as we can to plan our wedding in the spring.
 

Food

To counteract the splurge and the Fitnessing time crunch I’ll focus on trimming where I can and focusing on the things I can control. 
-Weekly meal planning and batch cooking 

-preparing meals that are tasty but healthy

-Including plenty of freggies

-Cutting the extras I don’t need. I don’t need 2 slices of cheese on my ham and cheese. I don’t need butter on that sandwich either. And I certainly don’t need desserts. 

-Snacking for hunger, not for fun. I’m cutting desserts and will try to ease up on afternoon chocolate too. I often eat candy in the afternoons because I think I’m hungry. I’m not. And if I am I should be eating snacks of substance. If I’m really hungry it will take too much candy to do the trick anyway. 


Im getting tired of logging food and noticed that’s it’s difficult to get back to it after traveling. I’m just getting back from a week long vacation so I’m not even going to try. I might use my food log as a tool in meal planning but it’s not a goal. Insyead I'll try to use the hunger scale to eat at good times and stop when I should.  I’ll rate days on a scale of ‘extra lean’ 🥬to ‘living my best life’ 🍰.   

 

Castle 

Life will be busy this challenge but the daily tidy/declutter goal from last challenge was really successful and there's no shortage of things to do or purge. I'll keep the same goal again this challenge. Any tidying for 5 minutes daily counts or at least purging 1 item. 

 

Creativity 

I'd  really like to keep a painting goal but I can't see that there will be time for that.  I have one half done to finish but no goals this time around.

Here for you!  I don't think I've had an apple cider donut. There's an apple festival next month, I'll try to fix that error. 

 

I like your plan.  You're giving yourself room for festival foods, and some slack for the back to school chaos.  I don't think anything you're doing is unreasonable, and I know what you mean about eating for hunger, not just for fun.

Great solution.  I always bring a banana to work and I can easily source baked chips, granola bars.  But rather than not being able to find a healthy snack when I need it, I usually find candy when I don't actually need a snack in the first place.

That seems like a great opportunity to get out of the house and try something new!  I have an apple festival on my calendar as well!

W1D1 - Monday

I did my post vacation weigh in.  It may be the most vacation gain I've had since recording.  Oh well.  It was great fun.  

 

Event Calendar: No events planned but it was still a busy day.  Back to work, and teaching, a meeting with a student, grading to catch up on, and DDG mowed the yard.  

 

No fitnessing happened and Fitbit calorie burn was below threshold.  I didn't have any meetings at work and I spent most of the day sitting and catching up on emails so I didn't get many steps.  There was no extra time in the evening for anything either so it is what it is.  

 

Practically first thing at work and a staff member brought over a package of cupcakes that I was inclined to decline until I realized some were pina colada cupcakes.  I saved it until lunch and then only ate the top half of the cupcake and the frosting.  Lunch was my usual ham and cheese, one slice of cheese only and no butter.  It makes a difference and it was not that enjoyable.  I'll have to fatten it up just a little.  No other sweets after lunch.  Afternoon snack was a banana but also a mini 100 grand candy bar.  I figured it's more filling than other candy so it was snacking for hunger and fun.   Dinner was virgin white wine chicken stew in the crock pot.  I forgot to buy white wine and we had none in the house.  So now it's just going to be called Virgin chicken stew.  We had mini naan with it and it was all very tasty.  No dessert.  Grade for the day: Lean Enough 🥘  

 

No tidying up happened either nor did I purge anything but I did purge something Sunday night and that was a bonus.

I've got not much taste for cold lunchmeat sandwiches these days, but I have a sandwich hack to share if you want to try it... You know how sometimes ham is served glazed? I like ham and jelly sandwiches (especially cherry preserves, and a good layer of deli sliced ham). You don't have to try it, and if you do it's okay if you don't like it. Sad sandwich time made me want to share an alternative.

This doesn't appeal to me as a sandwich but one year we had a fig glaze on our Christmas ham and the leftovers made the most amazing fig, ham, and havarti quesadillas!  I'd roast a ham just to make these leftovers again.

I think I had this same thought last year around this time when I wished I could send a package of Apple Cider Donut Oreos.   And now I feel a little guilty because now I'm excited for said Oreos.

W1D2 - Tuesday

 

Event Calendar - Nothing until I find out that a food truck we've been wanting to try was out at a location.  Sadly we didn't finish fitnessing in time to get there.  Happily, I found out they'll be out Friday at the same place as another food truck we want to try!  🤩

 

I was a hungry little beaver yesterday.  I fasted until lunch and had my ham and cheese (one slice of cheese, butter on one side) and chips and hummus.  It was much better.  I was hungry again shortly after and grabbed the grapes I packed in case of a hunger emergency.  I had those with the extra slice of cheese that wasn't on my sandwich and 4 crackers.  That hit the spot.  I was hungry again later in the afternoon so I had a banana and another mini 100 grand bar.   I've been trying to use a hunger scale but it's just really hard to trust myself.  I was hungry again at dinner so I decided to log my food for the day.  I was well under my usual budget.  I served up a slightly larger serving of Virgin Chicken Stew with some naan.  I ate really quickly at first so I stopped, slowed down, and checked in on my hunger.  Turns out I didn't really need the extra serving so I didn't clean my plate.   No dessert.  Score for the day - Extra lean 🍇

 

DDG and I made it out for a walk around the lake, 5k.  We finished right at 7 as the food truck was closing up shop so we just went back home for our usual dinner.  I planned to spend some time in the evening to finish my painting but I was just tired so I surfed the couch while DDG watched a soccer game.  We did spend 5 minutes out in the garden pulling some weeds.   I planted lavender in the spring and my dog trampled most of it.  I protected it with some chicken wire and it's filled out brilliantly.  It's finally blooming again.  We took the chicken wire down.  If she tramples them again I might have a dog for sale if you're interested.

W1S3 - Wednesday

 

Event Calendar - College soccer game at rival team's stadium.  

 

No time for fitnessing.  I left work early to get to class and then made home in time to change and get out to the game.  We had planned to walk around the stadium during halftime but forgot it wasn't a home game.  I guess we could have walked there but we felt out of sorts and didn't want to lose our GA seats.  However, there was walking on campus from the parking lot to the stadium and just navigating around.   Calorie burn was over 2400.  

 

I was hungry right away when I woke up so I decided against fasting and grabbed some breakfast at the work cafeteria.  I had two girthy sausage links and some breakfast potatoes.  I was a little on the stuffed side afterwards and figured I might just eat the snacky bits of lunch and skip the sandwich.  I waited until I got hungry and ended up being hungry enough for my usual lunch but an hour later than usual.  I had a few sqaures of dark chocolate and managed to avoid any other snacking all afternoon.  I was hangry by the time we got to the game.  Our concession choices were Godfather's Pizza or Chik-fil-A.  We usually don't like our money to go to Chik-fil-A and we generally prefer Godfather's.  I got aggressive and grabbed 3 slices of pizza and devoured them all.  I was secretly debating suggesting dairy queen after the game but during halftime DDG got us some peanut M&Ms to share.  That hit the spot and I was good for the day.     I'd say overall I made good choices.  I ate when I was hungry and usually stopped before going too far.   Grade for the day is Meh, leanish.  🍕

 

No time was spent tidying or decluttering.  We got home late and I spent 10 minutes putting together a chicken enchilada dip in the crockpot to take to work the next day.  We watched one episode of WestWorld before bed.

W1D4 - Thursday

 

Event Calendar - Food day at work AND dinner out with DDG's middle son (Luigi)

 

I did well with food day choices for awhile.  I focused on taking just what seemed worth it and then taking small portions at a time to allow time for a hunger check.  I was pretty lenient with hunger checks and just made sure I never got too stuffed.  I definitely still ate too much.  I did stop in time to be hungry for dinner.  The chicken enchilada dip I made was a hit and didn't last long.  I did obviously take some to quality check it. 

 

Dinner was at a pizza place making Detroit style pizza, which is my favorite.  We ordered a BBQ pulled pork pizza and then the brown sugar bacon garlic breadsticks.  The pizza was cut into squares so they are a bit smaller than a regular slice.  I left there thinking I had eaten 1 slice too many but in reality it was definitely at least 2 pieces too many.  Score for the day is a D for Dam Girl! Livin My Best Life! 🍕🍪

 

There was no time for fitnessing or tidying.  Calorie burn was sufficient at least.  We just surfed some Youtube and watched the most recent Last Week Tonight to wind down before bed.

W1D5 - Friday

 

Event Calendar - Food Trucks! 

I had some extra snacks at work since there were still food day leftovers.  I had a pumpkin chocolate chip cookie for breakfast, then a couple half cookies after lunch to sample some other flavors, and then a handful of Doritos in the afternoon for no good reason.  I had my usual lunch but skipped my healthy snacks since I wasn't hungry after the other snacks.  I never felt overly full so that's worth something.   For dinner we went to a food truck event.  There were 5 food trucks there but 2 we specifically wanted to try.  We shared a smash burger from the Boujee Brown Box food truck and a chicken Sandwich from the Burning Bridges Food truck.  They also had chicken and waffles as a rotating menu item and I wanted to try that too.  We got an order but neither of us ate much of it.  We shared it with Peach and her bestie.  DDG and I also left some of fries to avoid overdoing it.  I overdid it by just a little.   Overall grade for the day (including getting a walk in) Not so Lean but Could Have Been Worse 🍔🍪 

 

We did get out for a walk prior to dinner so that helped balance some of my choices.  After dinner we went out to a friends.  I had just 1 drink and avoided the snacks that were offered.  We didn't mean to stay long but we ended up there quite late but it was a good time.   No time for tidying and nothing purged.

W1D6 - Saturday

 

Event Calendar - AppleJack Festival and Dad was in town.  

 

We got up early-ish (for me on a weekend) and headed to a town an hour away for a fall AppleJack Festival with Peach and her bestie.  We got a lot of walking so counted that as our fitness.  It was a good time but I missed the apple watercolor event I was hoping to hit.  While we were looking for apple cider donuts  for breakfast we were in a boutique with free cookies so DDG and I each had a monster cookie.  Once we found donuts we bought a dozen for us and a half dozen to send home with my Dad.  DDG and I each had a donut and also got a maple donut with sprinkles each.  Divine.  After walking around most of the morning I grabbed a jumbo corndog for a late lunch.  We didn't really eat much there since we had dinner plans with my dad.  

 

Dinner was at the italian place close to home.  It really made an impression on my dad so that was his request and we were happy to oblige.  We shared a white pizza with pepperoni and some garlic bread.  I naturally had a slice or two too many.  Overall grade for the day was Not So Lean but Good Effort 🍩

 

I did get a little tidying done to prep Qbert's room for company.  I also purged an item in the process.

W1D7 - Sunday

 

Event Calendar - rescheduled soccer game

There was a game Saturday evening that we were going to miss since my Dad was in town, but it rained out and got rescheduled for Sunday.  We had planned a 4 mile walk at the lake but I was really tired from late nights and early weekend mornings and we were both just a little burnt out so we decided to skip it.  We relaxed all morning watching Westworld and then DDG ran for groceries while I took a nap that last almost 3 hours.   We got a little activity going to the game in the evening but steps and calorie burn were delightfully low.  

 

I had a couple leftover apple cider donuts for breakfast.  They were good but never as good the next day.  I had bought some chokecherry jelly at the applejack festival so I had a half an english muffin with some of the jelly while I made our proper lunch.  I scrambled some eggs and made bacon and attempted to stuff some pita bread.  I couldn't get the pita to open so it was just an open face pita 'wrap'.  I was still a little hungry so I had a apple pecan cookie I brought home from work.  After my nap I had some potato chips and french onion dip then a hot dog at the game with a peanut butter cookie later on.  Food choices weren't great but I ate when I was hungry and didn't when I wasn't so I'm grading it at Lean. 🥙

 

I didn't bother with any tidying but did toss some old plastic bottles I used to use to bring drinks to work.  It cleared up lots of space in the cupboard.

The food was quite good!   Thanks!  I'm finding it difficult to objectively grade without logging.  But not enough difficulty to start logging again 😅

W2D1 - Monday

 

Event Calendar - Spontaneous dinner out with Peach

We had an event this week get canceled and I was really looking forward to just eating in all week and making some progress.  Then Peach called me and had the night off and wanted to hang out so we all went out to Old Chicago.  While out we were talking about our day at the applejack festival and talking about what we'll do differently next year.  That's when DDG realized that next fall Peach will not live at home and she'll be off at college.  That hit me like a ton of bricks.  After my eyes glistened and sweated for a little bit 😪 we decided to make plans for Peach and I to hit the applejack festival this coming weekend too.  

 

I ordered the turkey bacon club.  It was one of the lowest calorie items on the menu and certainly the lowest of the items I was debating.  We did order an appetizer too and shared.  My sandwich was good but had very heavy bread and was loaded with turkey.  I pulled off some of the excess turkey from the sandwich.  Partway through the first half I realized it was a little too bready, so I transferred what was left of the bacon from that half to the other half and then finished that half.  I ate less than half the waffle fries too.  It's a good thing it wasn't tots.  Grade for the day was As Lean as I Could Get Under the Circumstances 🥪.  

 

No fitnessing but calorie burn was just barely above minimum.   Since Peach and I were hanging out we went through a trove of wallets that I found in a duffel bag.  I had already sorted the wallets in my closet and purged until they fit into the container for them.  So I needed to resort again so all the new ones fit too.  I got rid of 10 wallets and found $16.  I also grabbed one of those boxes of junk that I keep putting off decluttering and grabbed 2 things from it to purge.
