Silmarilliane's Twenty-ninth Challenge

Recommended Posts

Hello! Happy Halloweeny Autumnal season. I completed my last challenge successfully and levelled up! Again popping this in here mainly so I can list out all the overeatery days I'll have in the next challenge which generally lowers my stress and anxiety. The last challenge went well, and that structure works for me. I've lost a stone in the last year, and although I've put a few pounds on this week with the non-challenge-overeating, I'm hoping that'll level back off again when I kick back in on Sunday. As such I'm going to copy over most of the same goals and point scoring, with slight amends for things that worked/didn't work.

I did set up a new home weights workout that I do once a week - bench press (3x10 sets of 45kg), gym-ring pull ups (3x10 sets of jackknife from hip height) and RDLs (3x10 sets of 50kg) and I'm upping the weights/difficulty as they become easily doable. I'm definitely finding it easier putting this in once a week rather than three times, and it's reduced the stress of all the reminders to do things.

THE CHALLENGE

Food

  • Under 1600 calories a day = 10pts
  • Two days in a row = 5pts
  • Overeating one meal = 0pts
  • Overeating dinner and then eating more for the sake of it = -10pts
  • Overeating the whole day for the sake of it = -50pts

Total possible = 520pts

Sleep

  • No phone scrolling in bed = 10pts
  • Two days in a row = 5pts
  • Phone scrolling elsewhere instead of going to bed = -5pts

Total possible = 520pts

Walking

  • 2.5+ miles per day = 10pts (this means I have to do a walk both in my lunchbreak and after work when wfh because I've been getting slack)
  • Two days in a row = 5pts

Total possible = 520pts

Other exercise

  • Any additional cycling, HIIT, Zumba = 5pts
  • Complete home weights workout = 5pts
  • Week Sun-Sat without doing at least three additional exercises = -10pts

Total possible = many!

1250pts required to pass this challenge (may tweak up or down based on review of things I have on)

Do you have a barbell, or is the bench and RDL with DBs?

I have two bars - one for the bench and one set up to go for RDLs, also have various dumbbells and the pull up bar with gym rings! I'm doing very minimal with them all at the moment though, but want something I'll stick at and not get annoyed with...

TWO BARSSSSS what kinds are they? I was researching bars for my future imaginary home gym and there are so many different things to consider: material, diameter, knurling, etc. 15kg Lady bars. Whippy bars. Rigid Bars. So much to ponder.

I prefer a minimalist programme. What  kind of workouts do you get annoyed at though?

Basically this kind, but ProFitness I think (iron weights rather than vinyl), and the other one is actually my other half's and came with the bench - that one has is two parts screwed together, which I'm sure means it has a limit to the weight you can add. Both of them are just bars with screw-on ends though, and I use gloves because I have sweaty hands! I am now going to research all of the things you've listed that I'd never heard of :D Particularly interested in what makes a Lady bar a Lady bar!

It's mainly the reminder on my phone that annoys me, because my life is reminders... And any time I was doing something else of a weights-evening I had to work out when I could do it instead. Mondays before pilates just works better as I'm already at home with a gap between work and leaving for class.

Ok, the dreaded list of things that might cause me overeatings this challenge:

  • 28/29/30th October: Barbershop convention, which usually means eating at random points in the day, drinking beer in the evening and the like. Hopefully Friday and Sunday should be ok and it'll just be Saturday that becomes overeaty
  • 4th November: Seeing a friend's show with potential dinner before and drinks after
  • 6th November: meeting friends for a roast dinner
  • 12th November: doing a show and may end up snacking/drinks after
  • 13th November: going for a roast dinner with another friend (tis the season)
  • 20th November: Cousins visiting and getting takeaway
  • 26th November: a friend is holding a charity curry evening
  • 27th November: potential pre-Christmas friend meet up (likely roast dinner!)

Ok, so none of those are screaming out a -50 day except potentially when the cousins visit. The roast dinner days might be tough, but I also assume I won't eat before or after (I don't tend to eat until after midday anyway as coffee easily sees me through).

I've just realised I'm on Level 26, which is important as it's the lowest level in Rogue, the most amazing game of my childhood. The purpose is to get the Amulet of Yendor, which allows you to get back up the staircases between levels (magically blocked until you have the amulet), however, the game is so frikkin hard that I never made beyond level 18 as a kid, and level 21 when an adult having read all the 'best chance' guides.

I really want a necklace that is the Amulet of Yendor, but as it was a DOS game and the symbol for it was  it just looks like I'm making a women's rights statement (which is fine, but I want it to be more nerdy!)

The real question is whether after this challenge I start my way back up the levels as the game does (i.e. next time I'll be level 25 again, but on my way back up), or carry on (next will be 27 assuming I pass). But if I travel back up, does that mean I complete life when I'm above ground? Do I die?!

Real real question... am I overthinking this? 😅

Ah, we're talking totally different barbells, standard vs olympic. Standard barbells are often smaller and have threaded sleeves, same diameter as the bar, onto which you screw the plates.  Olympic barbells are much more standardised--they are exactly 20kg or 45lb depending where you live, and the sleeves are 50mm and plates are slid on and clipped in place. They're the ones you'd find in olympic or powerlifting competitions, and at the gym usually. Women's bars are for olympic weightlifting, and weigh 15kg and have a slightly smaller diameter. In powerlifting competitions, both men and women use standard 20kg bars, but I did wonder whether the smaller weight and diameter might be useful for some things. I've read that a lot of women find it easier to grip a bar with smaller diameter. But I have longish hands, so it might not help me.

Ah! Thanks for the explaining - I just got what fitted in my house :D  I definitely think the bars I have are a good diameter, and anything wider wouldn't be comfortable/easy to grip.

Already plotting out today's calories so I can fit in a nice beer after singing... Yesterday I had high hopes for getting a cycle in or other exercise, but absolutely didn't. At least I managed 2miles walking in my lunch break and another quick one after work, and did an online pilates video (no class today as half term) which has caused me much DOMS today in my thighs! Ended up Duolingo-ing in bed before reading, but it was a quick lesson so I won't dock points this time. Definitely need to get better at doing Duo earlier in the day.

Always amazing how quick the days disappear! Always mean to update here first thing and here I am at the end of the workday having to write now before I shut down the laptop. I had the spare calories for the nice beer after singing and then no one went to the pub. Sad. But decided to just not have a snack and finish a couple of hundred cals under as I didn't need anything else. Weigh in today was under 11.5 stone again so that seems to have settled. Really need to take measurements again - I'm sure I meant to do it every challenge but think it's been most of this year haha!

OK, today has disappeared and I still have to pack for tomorrow (away until Sunday!) and also fit in exercise before online boardgames at 8pm.... lordy. Was really hoping to get extra exercise in yesterday but I just ran out of time before the evening. I also stupidly put in this challenge that I had to do THREE extra exercises a week, and that's not going to be possible with going away this weekend. SILLY PAST SILMARILLIANE! Unless... I take some gym stuff and do a quick workout in the hotel. Hmm. Well, at least I haven't packed yet!

Funny you should ask, I was not specific so I just did some 'scene change boxercise' where I watched Big Bang Theory in the hotel room and every time it changed scene I switched to a different kick boxing exercise 😅 got my heart rate up for fifteen minutes or so, so that counts! Yesterday I did the fitness blender 'better than nothing' workout haha. I did however spend some time on my phone before bed, not social media scrolling but still unnecessary.

Was relatively sensible yesterday with food - sandwich, carrot cake and crisps for lunch then nothing until dinner, though I overrate that (butternut squash mac and cheese yuhmmm) and had a couple of beers after. Kind of just overeating one meal, not quite to the level of overeating for the sake of it, so giving myself -5. Got another beach walk in 😃
