Shello's Body, Mind, and Castle, Chapter 9: Hibernate, Hygge, and Holidays

This seems to be how my winter is going so why not embrace it.   I've been eating extra food and storing it as body fat.  Now it's time to start using that as energy instead of continuing to eat.  This isn't about starving but about eating quality food in moderation.  

  • Home cooked food (1 pt per day)
  • Eat some freggies (1 pt per freggie)
  • Eat in moderation by being mindful (1 pt per day)

 

It's winter, it's dark, it's cold, and I'm sleepy.  The focus on the holidays can get hectic and busy but I really want to embrace taking care of myself and getting some rest. Hence the hibernation.

  • Rest, hopefully at least 7 hours of sleep a day.  (1 pt per hour of sleep)

Hygge is hard to describe but I'll be focusing on wellness and relaxing.  

  • Gentle movement every day.  Not really a workout, more like yoga or stretching.  (1 point per day)
  • Do my shoulder physical therapy daily.  For now that means 2x per day but this could change. (1 pt per session)
  • Relax.  Just do something that makes me cozy every day.  Maybe cuddling on the couch under a blanket, enjoying hot cocoa or tea. (1 pt per day)

For a good part of the challenge I'll be visiting family and enjoying the holidays.  This usually means lots of Christmas cookies, some drinking, and a general carelessness of eating.  Holiday Protocols will be in place.

  • Start the day with water or something other than soda (1 pt per day)
  • Stay Mindful when eating.  Cookies in moderation. (1 pt per day)
  • Eat a freggy (1 pt per day)
  • Fitness snacks: spend 5 minutes doing something to work my body.  (1 pt per day)

 

 

Points are meant to be super serious but I do better if I have something to track.  I figure there's probably about 450 points up for grabs so I'll just see how many I get.

I'm still really trying to understand it myself.  As a matter of fact, this gif is from an article explaining that coziness isn't really what it's all about.  Instead it's about appreciating the moment.  Or something.

W0 Monday -  Off to a great start.  Back to work after a long weekend.  I did venture down to the cafeteria for breakfast that wasn't entirely needed but they had those giant sausage links and potato cakes.  They accidentally gave me 3 sausage links and I only ordered 2.  But if you give me 3 I'm gonna eat 3 so I did.  I skipped the chips I had brought for lunch though as a trade off and only had grapes with my sandwich.  Banana in the afternoon but then has hungry when I got home so I ended up having some baked chips anyway.  I had the chips to hold me until dinner but it was still a struggle as I was starving.  Dinner was leftover pizza but it was homemade so it counts for a point.  

 

After work and a brutal class period I got home and spent some time catching up with DDG.   I got my 2 sessions of PT done and some gentle stretching for my hammies and glutes.  I tried my RingFit for the first time Sunday and I only did a few quick levels.  The after game summary showed 50 squats and I was starting to feel it.    We spent the rest of the evening cuddled under a blanket watching The Looming Tower.  Watching TV from the couch isn't anything unusual but it's still cozy so now I just get points for it.  

 

16/16 points for the day.  I had 1 fewer freggie than expected but an hour more of sleep.

W0 Tuesday - I must be going through a phase or have broken my fasting habit as I'm increasingly hungry in the morning and having a difficult time making it until lunch.   I did make it until lunch yesterday and a late lunch at that since I had a lot of late morning and midday meetings.  Luckily I had phys therapy in the morning so I didn't make it to work until the breakfast line was closed at work.   Lunch was the usual ham and cheese but I had grapes with it and a couple egg rolls from the cafeteria.  I ordered one to be reasonable but once I got it and saw how tasty it looked I just ordered a second.  They were amazing,  and filled with veggies so it counts for another point.   Dinner was open faced burgers on ciabatta.  We spread the raw hamburger over ciabatta rolls, seasoned and broiled until almost cooked then topped with cheese.   We had green beans on the side and since it didn't seem like enough food I also made a box of high protein mac and cheese.  It's a new brand I saw at Target and it's been sitting in the cupboard waiting for an opportunity to try it.  It did not disappoint!   We still have a lemon cheesecake portion left to share but neither of us were hungry enough for it.  

 

When I got home from work we both showered and had a lie in bed together for some cozy time.  Then we ran some errands before dinner.  The rest of the evening was spent on the couch, finishing up The Looming Tower.   I did sneak in a few yoga poses for some gentle movement.  It was barely a few minutes and I think I intended for the goal to include more than that but since the points don't really matter I'm counting it.  

 

15/16 points.  I forgot to do the 2nd set of shoulder stretches in the evening.

W0 Wednesday - I fasted until mid morning and had a banana.  This was helped by the fact that there wasn't anything really enticing in the cafeteria for breakfast.  I did have a free coupon for a rice krispy treat so I picked that up and saved it for the afternoon.  There was an excessive amount of Reese's after lunch which should have precluded the rice krispy treat but for whatever backwards reason my brain thought that was the only thing that would curtain the bloat from the Reese's.  It was like the little devil on my shoulder telling me to eat it and then I'll finally be satisfied and the angel on the other telling me that was stupid and just stop eating.  I ate the rice krispy treat.  

 

Class went long as a couple students stayed behind with questions.  I don't mind staying after if it helps make things click and in this case it did.  My brother called me as soon as I walked in the house and we ended up chatting an hour and a half.  We haven't really been keeping in touch very well and it was a nice call.  Afterwards DDG and I made open faced ciabatta cheeseburgers again.   They were better this time because I didn't follow the recipe.  We just had green beans with it so we could save our bellies for the last of the cheesecake that needed to be eaten.   I got my shoulder exercises done but no other movement for the goal.  We spent the rest of the evening working on save the date cards for the spring wedding and going through old pictures just for fun.

W0 Thursday - Fasted until lunch.  Had a bit too much candy in the afternoon but did at least get a banana in too for a solid 3 servings of freggies.  I have to start reminding myself I'm supposed to be hibernating and stop snacking so much when I'm not actually hungry.  Just because all the rest of my goals are free nilly willy doesn't mean I can just eat what I want.   I wasn't going to give myself a point for being mindful but after dinner Peach was tempting me with her late night dinner and I declined all. (and a good thing too since today she tells me she's getting sick!)   

 

Dinner was the last of the homemade pizza.  I did come up with a good idea to incorporate the last of the charcuterie board leftovers into batch cooking - I'll make a stromboli this weekend and use up whatever is left!   

 

We were pretty lazy the rest of the evening.  I didn't do anything particularly cozy to count for a point and no fitnessing or gentle movement either.  I did sit with DDG when I got home from work to catch up and then we watched some tv.  We started watching a National Geographic docuseries about 9/11.   We decided to watch it since we just finished The Looming Tower.  It's a very well put together show and I learned some things I had never heard.  There is no shortage of tragic personal stories so there were some that I hadn't heard either.  There were tears.  We didn't make it to bed early so another hibernation bust.

W0 - Weekend update

Friday 12/15 points.  We stayed up a little too late the night before so I was a little short on sleep.  It was also pizza night so nothing homemade and no freggies at dinner.  We split s frozen pizza.  Other than that it was a fine day.  Work was slow and by afternoon I couldn't wait to get out of there.  DDG had appointments to get our Covid booster jabs.  We had a quick snuggle for some coziness before heading out to that and then stopped for groceries on the way back.   We spent the evening on the couch finising our 9/11 docuseries.  

 

Saturday 16/16 points plus a pass for gentle movement due to the booster sleepies.  I woke up after a little extra sleep but then got really sleepy in the afternoon so I went up for a nap.  I'm sure it was a booster initiation nap.   Peach had some leftover sourdough bread from Panera, we had some apples that needed using, and I remembered the apple butter syrup we picked up at the apple jack festival.  This led to some homemade apple crisp french toast.  It was excellent!  Dinner was a spicy chicken italian sausage and chimichurri sandwich on toasted ciabatta (DDGs was on sourdough).  

 

Sunday 17/16 points.  I woke up feeling much better than the day before.  I slept in a little and had much more energy.  DDG and I needed some engagement pics to put on our save the date cards so we took Peach out to the lake where we walk and had her snap some.  I counted the strolling around between pics as gentle movement.   

 

I had tried on a gazillion outfits trying to find the best one for pics.  In the afternoon I went up to put the closet back together and decided I was already half way to switching out the winter for the summer clothes so was just going to get that job done.   I started to have some vertigo, which isn't really unusual for me.  I get it occasionally and I think it's migraine related. It usually lasts a few seconds at a time and will happen repeatedly.   Except this time was different.  I got about three quarters the way done and the vertigo wouldn't go away and I got really dizzy and nauseous.   There was only one spot on the bed clear and the cat was there.  So I pushed him aside and just laid down.  I could barely get up the rest of the day.  I got up to use the bathroom and my eyes couldn't focus on anything as everything was swimming.  I got really nauseous again and just sort of fell back into bed.  DDG tucked me in and insisted on  a nap, though I didn't really need any insisting since it was the only thing I could do.  I started to feel feverish and ended up sleeping about 3 hours.  I made another attempt at the restroom with the same results so it was right back to bed.  I had to have DDG finish up my task as the rest of the bed was covered in piles.  I was able to sit up and felt fine then so when I was starting to get hungry and dinner time I tried to get up and head downstairs with similar results.  DDG had to bring me dinner in bed, where I stayed for the remainder of the evening and then went to bed early.  Still no clue what caused this.  DDG thought maybe it was booster related, which is certainly possible, but it started nearly 48 hours after so not sure how likely that is.

Oh no, I'm sorry to hear you're poorly. This is how I felt when I had Norovirus but if you haven't had any gastric symptoms by now it probably isn't that. I hope you feel better soon. 

If it's not siesta or fiesta, I'm not interested.

W1 Monday - I had improved by morning but still got a little dizzy if I moved too quickly.  I was extremely tired still so I called in late for work and slept in late and then went into the office.  I just took it slow all day.   DDG didn't want me to have to walk upstairs to change after work so he brought me my sweatpants for lounging and I changed in the living room.   I still hadn't batch cooked meals for the week and DDG also refused to allow me to cook and offered to cook for me.  But that involved making pizza dough for a stromboli so we just ordered pizza and it really hit the spot.   I did a decent job of not eating too much but it was a Domino's pan pizza so you can only be so mindful.   The rest of the evening was spent on the couch mostly watching Youtube and doing some Christmas shopping.  I took a pass on gentle movement and skipped physical therapy too.  

 

16/15 points.  I missed a point for PT but got plenty of sleep so that made up the points.

W1 Tuesday - I was feeling better and back to normal.  We had a holiday luncheon at work so I fasted until that and then we had a huge spread, ham and roast beef, mashed potatoes and gravy, mac and cheese, veggies, salads, dinner rolls, and 3 desserts to choose from.  I had ham and a little of everything except salad.  I chose the red velvet cake dessert and it was very light and delicious.  It was a bigger lunch that usual but the portions weren't that bad so I didn't feel overly full.  In the afternoon I snacked on some grapes and then an emergency bag of baked BBQ chips even though it was hardly an emergency.  

 

Dinner was leftover charcuterie stromboli.  I made a homemade pizza crust dough and then used the rest of the salami, a lot of pepperoni, whatever cheeses were left plus some mozzarella.  We served it with a couple carrots that needed eaten and some frozen peas.   It was delicious and portions seemed reasonable.  I remarked to DDG that it's funny how we can be satisfied with a plate with a moderate amount of stromboli and some veggies even with plenty of empty space on the plate, but if we were to have pizza, we would have full plates and seconds.  He sad pizza is the devil and only monsters eat veggies with pizza (any veggies on pizza is not included though we do not partake in such proclivities. 

 

Before I left work DDG had asked if there was anything I wanted to do that evening.  I said not really except move some furniture around to make room for the tree and then try to get the tree put up.  I had to work a little late for reasons but when I got home the furniture was moved and the tree was up!  So I pulled out the decorations and we put the tree skirt on, fluffed the tree, and added some ribbon.  We kept the can of compressed air handy to deter the cats.   I also opened the pile of amazon boxes of gifts that had been piling up and just set them under the tree unwrapped for now to keep the cats from playing underneath.  It finally looks like Christmas. 

 

13/15 points.  I totally forgot about my shoulder exercises and I didn't count the day as being mindful given the extra snacks in the afternoon that were completely unnecessary.

DDG has many questions.  When you say you eat veggie sticks with pizza, do you mean like, just on the same day?  Just in the same week?  Do you put them on the same plate?!

W1 Wednesday - Fasted until lunch and had the usual following by a bit too much candy.  But then no snacking later in the afternoon.  Dinner was leftover stromboli but the portions were smaller as it didn't go as far as I'd expected.  So we finished off the last of the Domino's and each had a slice.  Since we had the domino's though we didn't get any veggies with dinner.  We are not monsters.  We did, however, make some garlic bread because it still didn't seem like enough food except it absolutely was. Only then we still had garlic bread to finish.   Maybe there's something to this veggies with pizza thing after all. 

 

I left work early for class.  It was the last instruction day of the semester and I am very glad it's over.  When I got home DDG had some errands to run but I was perfectly happy to sit on the couch and keep it warm.  I watched some Trash TV that DDG could make fun of when he got home, and he did.  We started watching Treme and watched a couple more episodes but we just can't get into it so we switched to Youtube for a bit before bed.  

 

9/15 points.  Low on sleep and veggies.  Forgot my shoulder exercises again too.

W1 Thursday -  I broke my fast a little early with a banana.  Then I was really craving chocolate milk.  They have some in the vending area downstairs.  I grabbed some thinking I could just drink half of it (1 serving at a time) but no, I drank the whole thing.  I really borked up my lunch routine.  I wasn't hungry when I usually am but started to get hungry before an appointment.  I had part of the lunch with some grapes and then finished lunch after my appointment.  

It was our 4 year anniversary and we were deciding whether to go out or stay in and looking at some restaurant ideas.  We ended up both suggesting the same place so that's where we went.   We ordered a braised beef shank poutine that we shared.  It was the best non-traditional poutine I've ever had.  Then we ordered cherry smoked baby back ribs with a cherry bbq sauce to share.  We ordered it with fries and mashed potatoes.   It was very good and even with sharing we couldn't quite finish it.  There was enough left for DDG to have for lunch today.  DDG also suggested Dairy Queen but then the waitress offered the dessert menu.   We ordered the cronut sundae - fried cronut dough with vanilla ice cream, caramel sauce, chocolate sauce, and strawberries.  It was divine.  Other than dinner we spent the evening admiring each other and then finalized our save the date and placed the order.  

 

13/15  points.  No home cooking (no regrets) and though I was mindful I still ate a lot yesterday.
