I hope you all enjoyed the frivolity of your respective holiday festivities, but - Hurry now, there be no time to waste!  There is an adventure afoot!  Leave no side quest left uncomplete, no rock left unsearched, and no wise old NPC left ignored.  You'll see tavern security issuing everyone their cloaks, armaments, and adventuring gear, our beloved Rebellion blacksmith is a quick lap to the east if your equipment needs a quick repair or upgrade, and the travelling alchemist is around here somewhere for all your health and combat potion needs.

 

If you need it, that scroll with the challenge dates for 2023 scrawled upon is nailed to the Messaging Post, make sure to check them out, and don't forget to invite your adventure parties along! 

 

As for me, I'm ordering a tankard of the barkeep's finest winter warmer for the road!  My mount is hitched, my saddlebags are packed, and my weapons keen and sharp for the January 2023 challenge!  See you out there

A small commotion rattles the back of the (airily large, yet cozily snug) inn as a small, plump Ranger tumbles into a seat, her round cheeks rosy from the icy cold and frowzy hair frazzled by her enormous furry hood. Her land of origin is blanketed in snow, and dirty chunks of frozen slush stick to her tall, fur-trimmed boots.

 

"The weather is offensive and I need something hot," she announces to no one in particular. "Make that a large cinnamon latte with extra whipped cream, barkeep. I need energy for adventuring!"

[WolfDreamer]

The door to the tavern opens and shuts quickly, letting in the brisk cold for a few seconds before an Adventurer, clothed in a hooded furry cloak, shuts it behind him. A wolf is standing by his side. Both the man and the wolf shake the snow from their furry coats. The man mumbles something, and the wolf sits obediently as if guarding the door.

 

"Evening," the man says, nodding to the other tavern guests. He removes his hood and approaches the bar. "Something warm and strong," he says. "And a treat for Nashoba here." The man nods his head towards the wolf.

[Sovalis]

The low burning candles on the tables gutter briefly as a tall, hooded figure in a sage green cloak scoots past the wolf guarding the door and closes it behind them. Rubbing their hands together briskly, they strip off their gloves and blow warm breath over their chilled fingers. “Tea, if you please, GoodSir? With a shot of amaretto in the cup if you have some?” 

[Ranger Hal]

Ranger Hal steps up beside Sovalis. "May I have tea as well? Very strong peppermint, please." After collecting the steaming cup, she heads over to a dark corner near the fireplace where she can watch the room.

[Artemis Prime]

Another Ranger pushes the door open with a gust of wind, does a double take at the wolf by the door, and promptly trips over her own feet, sprawling across the threshold. She gives a tentative pat to one of the large paws beside her face before scrambling up and finally wrestling the door closed. Straightening her cloak, she casually strolls to the bar. "I need a little something to take the chill off, Barkeep, and I'm not talking tea."

[WolfDreamer]

The Adventurer turns at the sound of something thumping onto the floor. He looks with concern at the Ranger who had just tumbled onto the floor next to his wolf companion.  He is pleased, though, to see that the wolf responds well to the Ranger's fall and gentle pat, and to see that he recognizes the Ranger as @Artemis Prime.

 

"Good boy, Nashoba," the Adventurer says. "Don't mind him," he says to the Ranger. "He's a softy indoors. It's out in the wild you'd need to worry."

[Artemis Prime]

The ranger turns to smile at @WolfDreamer. "He startled me, is all. I've seen those eyes circling my campfire at night. Didn't expect to see them in the tavern, too."

[WolfDreamer]

The Adventurer nods to @Artemis Prime. "That's good you've seen them," he says. "It means you're protected." He glances over at the wolf with a clear look of wonder and pride.

 

"So what burdens have you come to unload in this place?" he asks.

"Oh nothing particularly burdensome. But the trails are dark and cold this time of year, and the load starts to weight a bit heavier. A good drink with good friends, though," she lifts her glass in a toast to the tavern at large, "that lightens it considerably."

I've had to (95%) give up drinking IRL, but my protagonist is on a long long journey and needs all the frothy malty/hoppy calories she can get:

Our protagonist steps in. In addition to her weapons and usual winter cloak, she's hauling a. lot. of. stuff. Her horse is on holiday. The stuff is heavy. As if Santa's sack and a 105 L backpacking pack got together and hatched a terrible terrible plan. It looks compact and neat until you start walking around it and realize it's as big as her torso and twice as deep. As for the contents? Let's just say the Tardis could learn a thing or two. She ditches it by the door and is instantly 3" taller. It falls over. Naturally.

 

Unburdened, she strides to the bar, reaches over it for the BIG tankard, and thunks it down in front of the barkeep. He doesn't dare raise an eyebrow. Her cheeks are hollow. He fills it up and shoves and equally large bowl of stew and hunk of bread her way.

I'll have a cup of sugar with some strong black tea.

A scarred half-orc stumbles through the front gate, sword and shield still in hand.

"I see you know the proper way to drink coffee," the paladin says with a smile as he punches his coffee to keep it in the mug.

[WolfDreamer]

Wolfdreamer hears another thud by the door at glances at the Ranger who just entered. He stares wide-eyed at the large pack the Ranger just dropped by the door. Even the wolf sits up and gives a concerned groan.

 

"Quite the satchel you got there," he says to @DaemonCorax. "Looks like you have already 'unburdened' yourself." He chuckles and looks around the tavern. Then, his face looks strange as words come to him seemingly out of nowhere.

 

"If at night you sing your tired chin to sleep, it's not a metaphor, it's a tragedy." 

 

Wolfdreamer clear his throat and looks around the tavern again.

 

"Apologies," he says. "That happens sometimes." A little nervous and embarrassed, he makes eye contact with the wolf and seems to calm. He bows his head, looks at his drink, and sighs.

[Asha Phoenix]

A small, wearied ranger slowly approaches the bar. "A strong, tall cup of peppermint tea, please." She says, barely loud enough to hear. She looks gratefully at the barkeep, smiles, and finds a small, cozy corner to watch the tavern from.

 

[Jarric]

A wood elf enters the tavern, accompanied by a blast of icy wind which he hurriedly shuts out. Though bent and bowed under the weight of his pack, he seems to grow slightly taller as the warmth of the hearth reaches him.

 

"Pint of the black stuff, barkeep," he says, settling into his bar stool as a smile slowly creeps across his features. "Nice to see so many people here already."

It is the only way to drink coffee. Add any extras and it's no longer coffee, it's something else.

Shaking the snow off her green cloak, Chris looks around the bustling tavern before winding her way to the bar.  "Something hot, please .... " she asks while looking around the assembled wanderers.  "Do we expect a bard to be performing later ... or is something else afoot?"

Yes, hello. So, for my drink, just pour a lot of clean, hot water into that there swirling portal to an unnamed dark and clammy dimension, please, barkeep. Some rosemary and lemon would be fine. Or other things that would be at home in a bath. 100 litres. For my drink. Yes.
