Indeed. Sweat glands and cooperation are how our species took over the planet.

I don't need to take over the panet, but a more harmonious relationship with my small patch of the world would be nice. :)

Another morning at the gym. I'm liking this. Today I walked with a person I'd seen before but never spoken with. I said hi and then we just fell into conversation. It turns out that she's a nurse who does Quality Assessments on patient care, and I asked her a couple questions about how that works, and what the resulting rating mean for providers, and she had great answers. I told her I was in an anthropolgy and biomendicine course and she was excited about that and said she hoped we got to walk-and-talk again soon. This is the Way.

The sauna and steam room were a blessing, as always. In the last couple weeks, there has been a woman in the sauna in the mornings who is negative--sort of one of those folks who have an identity based around low-key complaint. It's not a big deal, but after a few days it started to wear on me, so I have gradually moved my gym time up a bit in the hopes of spending less sauna time together. I don't know if the scheduling shift worked, or if she has succumbed to resolution-fatigue already, but I didn't see her yesterday or today. Thank you, Universe.

I met with Stacy the therapist today, and I think the conversation went well. She overall seems to believe that I am doign just fine and that I'm supportive of Vivian. I asked her to make this a bit more known in our group conversatoins, since she hasn't come out and said it in any of her replies, and that until we get everyone aclimated to the undertanding that "good enough is good enough," the nitpicking will be validated as being the last word. (You wouldn't think I would have to say such things to a professional, but we all need reminders of the big picture sometimes, and I think that Stacy really does want to be supportive of Vivian.) We also talked about possible activities. I feel like it was a good conversation.

I'm looking forward to getting the apartment in order for the visit this weekend.

Apartment therapy has begun in earnest.

I have no idea where the bookcase is going to live, and the books are in the floor while I figure that out. There are boxes waiting to be filled, and there are and stuff is kind of everywhere, but the living room has actual space, and we'll see how much I can get neatened up before Vivian arrives in the morning.

But that will have to happen tomorrow after I wake up.

I had my first massage/ physical therapy session in a year, and it was two hours long. It was great and wow did I need it. And wow am I tired. Nothing is keeping me from bed.

7000+ steps; 4 water bottles.

It's a good day.

The visit this weekend was back to Saturday during the day and then Sunday.
We had a great time on Saturday running around at the gym. She asked to go to the racquetball courts before swimming, so we did, and then she wanted to check out the treadmill and the stationary bike and so we did, and we also did the rowing machine. She was pretty worn out after all that, and we went home without having been in the pool, a first for us.

I had a difficult time falling asleep again, getting up every hour or so. I slept from midnight until 2, then was up again until about 5 and slept until 8.

Yesterday and today she helped me put some of the bookcases back in order in the living room, and today she helped with the construction of a smaller bookcase, and we talked while we worked. It was nice. There was a conversation about lying that had to happen, and I’m glad we had some handiwork to help with that — handiwork always seems to make awkward or difficult conversations more digestible and less scary.

I am tired, and happy.

Yesterday I got over 6500 steps, which is nice, especially since today was a low-step day — i doubt I’ll break 3,000. Even so, Fitbit says I’ve averaged 5,821 steps  a day this week, and that’s not too shabby.

I should read for class for the upcoming week.

Chances are good I’ll be asleep though.

Holy moly, y’all, let’s talk about resting heart rate, and my heart rate overall.

Since at least July, my resting heart rate has been in the upper 70s and at times lower 80s. Yes, this is sub-optimal.

I’ve been paying more attention to it especially since September, given all the shenanigans and chaos that have been in my life, the increased work load, and the decreased activity level. Again, sub-optimal, but we have to take a measure of the landscape, no matter how many weeds there are.

I’d been a little concerned that my heart rate doesn’t drop below the lower 70s while I sleep, and during a few choice times has even registered in the 180 range (yes, during sleep — whack a doodle, I tell you, but it tracks with waking up in a heart-thumping panic those times, so not inaccurate). I have been to the gym five days in a row for the first time since mid-September, and back then I saw a drop from lower 80s to mid-70s. I was encouraged that the lower80s hadn’t come back, but had noted that October - December was still in the upper 70s.  At no point had the heart rate tracker pick up anything less than 72 or so, even in deep sleep.

I was taking my watch off to charge it for a bit and noticed my heart rate was at 66. Wait, what? I placed the watch on the charger and opened the app.

My resting heart rate today is 72, with several periods of sleep and general activity falling into the lower to mid 60s. I’m astonished, but pleased. More of this, please. My cortisol-reduction approach seems to be gaining some traction. Please join me in a moment of gratitude.

Yesterday morning I didn't want to go to the gym. I let that be true for a bit as I made tea -- it was only 5 in the morning, and no decisions had to be made yet. It was still true at 5:30, and my mood was shifting from reluctnat to cranky, not in response to anything in particular. By 6 I was feeling completely belligerent, and realized that if I felt this off, I absolutely needed to go to the gym. I walked a lap, telling myself that if i didn't want to do a second one, that was fine, I could quit and go to the sauna at any time, I had already succeeded by showing up. A couple laps later I started feeling the groove. By the time I got to a mile, I was glad I had showed up.

I met with the organizer yesterday and we worked in the hallway / pantry  area, and I really like what we got done. It was almost the end of her time when I had an epislde, and had to call everything done immediately and lie down in the dark. This was wisdom. Also, the Universe is sending me very clear messages about driving and car ownership. Wisdom is that I wouldn't drive for another six months from yesterday, so going out and finding the right car that is reliable and fits my budget --or, alternately, dumping a lot of cash into the jeep and praying that it doesn't need another gold infusion every three months -- is not a wise direction for me right now. Public transit it is, for the foreseeable.

[Look, I love public transit. It's just that the offering in my town is the illustrated dictionary defition of hateful. You work until 9? Oh, well, too bad; buses stop running at 8. You missed your bus? Ooopsies; wait an hour (unless it's Saturday; then you can wait two hours--no bus service on Sundays or holidays. Also the routes are a spoke-and-wheel design without the wheel. Need to go from one sector to another a few miles away? Take the bus from your sector to downtown, get a transfer pass, and wait until the bus going to that sector leaves -- shouldn't take more than 90 minutes, really, what's your rush?) What's ridiculous is that it would be so easy to solve, and would garner a ton of goodwill among residents--we're a mountain city with century-old roads that aren't getting any wider while the population continues to grow. Increasing public transit to  halfway-decent would go a long way in helping businesses fill jobs and helping people like their town, all the considerable environmental aspects aside. The problem here, as in so many places in the States, is that the town transit is a private company. Not much to be said about the profit margin on services. At least the ticket booth (only available at the downtown hub) now takes debit cards -- until a few months ago they only took cash to purchase the bus pass. Other cities have solved this a number of ways, but my favorite is that everyone can ride for free or very reduced fares, and the bus company gets paid per rider from the public coffers, which incentivizes the company to go out of their way to make riding as attractive as possible.]

This morning, I was just as creaky and cranky as ever, and slow-moving and muddle-headed to boot. I was definitely thinking that I woudn't be going to the gym, not because I was in a foul mood, but because I was wiped out. I made my 5 o'clock tea and checked the news, and by six I was more achey than ever, and I realized the best way to feel better quickly was to go to the gym, even if just for the sauna. The sauna is magic any time, but especially after all the toxins and inflammation of an episode. I set up the slow cooker chicken with a chicken breast instead of thighs and headed out the door.

I pulled myself together, refilled my water bottle and headed over. The first lap was the same as before, and the half-mile was the same as before, and the mile happened and I was smiling, the same as before. In the locker room, I changed into my new suit and thought I would hit the hot tub, but decided to swim a cuople laps first. A couple laps became 250 yards, and I felt great. I spent five minutes in the hot tub before going to the steam room and sauna, and my post-sauna shower was nothing short of amazing. I am so glad I splurged on a new suit (and that it fits, always a roll of the dice).  I refilled my water bottle and headed home, feeling great. More of this is in the future, I think.

I'm really glad that I set up the crock pot, because by 10 I was ready to anything and everything. I'd already gone through my overnight oats, and while I was glad of the oatmeal-and-yogurt carbs to help keep me warm (I've been cold for days and can't seem to shake it), I needed some zip and a hearty amount of protein. More of this, too.

On the apartment front, I'm working on sorting clothes. I have a few acrylic shoebox sized drawers, and I'm sorting my everyday clothes into them -- long sleeved gym shirt, short sleeved gym shirts, gym dresses, sweatshirts,  gym shorts, sweatpants, leggings, you see where this is going -- I don't wear non-gym clothes much at all, really. I  might put together a couple extra tall (12" high) shoeboxes for "nice clothes." We'll see what happens when I clear out the closet in a couple weeks (it got purposed for quick-storage when I moved in and hasn't been dealt with yet).

Work has been good so far, and I'm glad of it.

I have a couple articles to read and a paper to write about them tonight.

Today the weariness was well and truly all over me when I woke up this morning.

I did the same routine as before, but the third lap around the track felt like a forced march, and by the sixth I was just done done done. I think this is a success, overall, because it’s not about how many steps I do as much as it’s about taking stock and doing what I can, especially in a routine. I went to the steam room and the sauna, and then made my slow slow slow way back home to log in to work.

Work blew up a bit for the first hour, and has since then settled down; this is the way of it in IT.

The therapist canceled the family session for tonight. Ordinarily, I’d be irked, and sometime after I recover from today’s episode I’m sure I will be appropriately irked, but for now I’m simply marking time until I’m out of this latest round of neurological activity. I’m very glad the paper has already been written and submitted.

I have a dogsitting gig next week, starting on Saturday. I’m starting now to slowly put things together and get the apartment in a decent enough state that I can leave it, since it will likely take me most of two days to find the energy for small tasks. There is tons that still needs to be done in the bedroom area of course, but that will have to wait. Rome wasn’t built in a day, or even in a week.

I am completely depleted and even lifting the mouse is work — I’ve entered another Mountain Phase.

I see a hot bath and an early bedtime in my future.

Yesterday was in fact a Mountain Day, a day of stillness and contemplation, moving at a geological pace. Sleep came early, and was deeply restful.

This morning I woke up and made my way to the gym, the creakiness working its way out of my knees and my back as I dressed and walked in the predawn dark. By the time I swiped in at the gym, I was nearly fluid, and I found my slow groove by the second lap. An old timer joined me for a few laps after that, and we talked about his air conditioning repair woes, laughed about me turning down my Uber driver last week, and me saying "did I not just say I don't have pets?" These are the  conversations about nothing that I think are directly responsible for my lower heart rate; connection matters.

After the mile, I swam at least 200 yards. I think it was 200, but fitbit thinks it was 350. Anyway, I swam for about ten minutes and then got in the hot tub for a couple minutes before heading to the steam room. This continues to be an excellent addition to help work the creaks out and leave me feeling centered for the coming day.  The steam room and the sauna continue to be wonderful.

Because the Universe loves me and wants me to be happy, the dogsitting folks canceled. I am relieved, and very grateful, and wish them a speedy recovery from their colds.

Today at work is calm and smooth, so far. I'm planning on picking up my jeep and relocating it back to the parking lot so that it can sit while I figure out where she goes next and also unload my things from her in preparation for letting her finally go.

I am in a calm, centered headspace, and I'm glad I waited to write the Upcoming Emails. This is a space from which I can more easily access harmony and supportiveness. This is the Way.

All is right with the world.

May you have peace this day.

Well, friends, it looks like there might be life left in the old jeep after all. I went out and found a price on a rebuilt engine and transmission (not that she needs a new transmission, but I don’t want to put a new engine in and then have the transmission fall out) and then called my mechanic to get an estimate on parts and labor to put it in. All told, it’s still not anywhere near cheap, but it’s loads less than a new car, or even a new-to-me used car, either of which would come with their own issues and expenses. So. I’ll be calling the engine guys back on Monday after I’ve had time to sit with this. This feels like a good way forward.

I had a nice day at work, and then logged out and met with the Jedi Council, who are still lovely — I wish we met more often; it’s hard to catch up on the month that was — and I’m grateful that they still make time for me.

It’s a good day and it has been a good week, despite the oddities and Mountain Days along the way.

All will be well.

Today has been a good day.

I woke at the usual time and didn’t do much of anything for a bit, just made tea and read the news until a friend texted he was on his way into town.

We met up and walked a mile and a half at the gym, then he came in the apartmento and helped me put together three (3) ikea bookcases, two of which I affixed sound dampening tiles to the back of (while listening to David Bowie, because man, dealing with the mounting tape was the most mind-numblingly mindless thing I’ve done since having an EEG four years ago). We moved the furniture out of the bedroom and then moved two of the bookcases in, and I love the difference already. I’m going to need a third for the bedroom, and I have just enough sound dampening tiles left for another.

After the apartment workout, we went to lunch and then got ice cream and played chess. We were both so worn out we almost forgot to pick up the milk on the way back.  After putting the milk away, I walked him back down to the lobby and we hauled some of the cardboard boxes out (about half — there’s still another trip worth in the hallway, but that can wait a bit). I waved goodbye and wished him a hearty farewell and made my way back into the apartment.

The area that is filled with “stuff I don’t know what to do with yet” is so much smaller now — a six by three patch at the end of my bed, and the rest of the apartment is lovely and useful. This is good. This makes my heart happy. I’m looking forward to neatening and finishing the decorating this coming week, and might also make some headway on The Pile of Things, but for today, this is enough. This is very good.

I am so glad that everything is coming together in your space! I lives in a 300 sq ft studio for almost two years and once it was set up the way it needed to be, I *loved* it. I wish this for you.

Thank you, yes, I wish this for me too :) I do feel like once I get things set up in a way that is supportive that I could live here for a very long time, and I like the idea of that, too. I have moved more often than is reasonable or healthy, and I’m definitely looking forward to not doing that.

My plan yesterday was to do Absolutely Nothing™ but I ended up taking Vivian’s locker out and moving the new narrow bookcase into that spot and then relocated her ever-growing Playmobil collection to the shelves. It looks really nice, and I’m glad I did it. I also started sorting through the UnknownHorrors pile, and it’s much smaller, barely a pile now. I have a collection of things to donate, and I’m hopeful that will get picked up no later than next week. The Mountain of Pillows & Blankets has their own spot, and there’s a large basket that will be deployed to corral them. Clothes and toys and games all each have a shelf or a home, and man, I like this much better. The light quality is better, and the sound quality is too. For all that putting the tiles on the back of the bookcases was tedium as an extreme sport, it was absolutely worth it. I’m going to need a laundry basket, and a hamper, and this makes sense now that I have the available space to make a plan of where they will live. It’s all small steps, but it’s really adding up. Yesterday evening I made a phone call to a new salon that’s walking distance, and I have a hair appointment tomorrow after work.

This morning I went to the gym and walked more than a mile, then went to the steam room and sauna. I didn’t really have the energy for swimming, and that’s okay, too. The day at work was good, and I got to spend most of it just doing my thing this morning, which was good since I was feeling the mental health toll of the news lately. After work there were several different projects and situations to look into and that all went well. Today is a good day.

I am tired, and I am looking forward to going to sleep.

I’ll probably browse through the readings for this week and pull out some interesting quotes.  I don’t have the energy or personal bandwidth for engaged paper-crafting, and that’s all okay.

May you have peace this day, friends.

I didn’t make it to the gym yesterday or today — I have been moving extremely slowly in the mornings, and it felt like some weather was coming. Sure enough, the buckets of rain started pouring down around 10, and I immediately started feeling better. I’m glad I gave myself time to go slowly and to rest.

Yesterday I did a lot of work on the readings and the paper that I’ll be writing this evening, and then walked down to the salon near me after work. I got a ton of hair cut off — it was time — and I’m still trying to get used to it. Overall, I like it, and while I think it’s a little too short, it will certainly grow quickly enough.

Vivian’s dad confirmed that she’s not meeting me at the library for early dismissal today.

The rain has truly set in, and I’m off work for the day, so I think I’ll just take my time in the apartment, enjoying the space and the time to myself. There’s yet another Leverage: Redemption episode, and some neatening to do.

Today is a good day.*

Friends, I’m tired. I didn’t make it to the gym this morning, and it’s a full on Mountain Day, again. This happens. I am learning to sit with this and be in acceptance. The Way is not easy; it’s just the Way.

I’m having weakness in my left side enough to notice; I’ll bring it up to the acupuncturist on Monday evening, by which time hopefully it will have passed.

I’ve decided that Today is a Good Day, even though it will likely be unproductive.

I’ve done my homework for the week, and that’s enough for now.

Friends, I'm sure I've expressed my fondness for almondbutter and black currant sandwiches before.

BUT.

Have you ever taken one of those and grilled it in butter, like a grilled cheese? I had not, until just now.

five stars, highly recommend.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Next experiment will be to dunk it in egg wash and make it like French Toast (probably this weekend).

Thanks. Not really sure what's what, other than (probably) just needing some recovery time.

I did feel better this morning, but was still slow and didn't even wake up until nearly 7. By the time I made tea and was human-ish, it was time to log in.

That sandwich sounds delicious. I think I have black currant jam, may have to try!

Happy to share the inspiration! Let me know if you like it. :)

Today at work has been a lot. Everything set itself on fir by 9, and we've spent the whole day figuring it out and putting out other, likely unrelated, sparks. There's so much going on that no one can get any work done, especially on our team. There's also a ton of projects coming in the next couple weeks, and it's unlikely that the pace or the messupery will slow down. I'm glad I have 25 years of tech work beneath me to hold me. I've been relying on Old School Knowledge all day.

Speaking of knowledge, I'm liking my class. It's only 8 weeks long, so the pace is kind of brutal, but it's a good topic. I got to talk about one of my favorite things: how public transportation drives healthcare and health outcomes. These sorts of issues are why I bothered to go to grad school.

I have a lengthy email to write and my brain is saturated.

I also have two dressers to put together, but will probably leave that until next week, since I can't see finding the energy even to open the box tonight.

I am very tired.

Also, did I mention that I got a haircut? I did. I love the length (very short) but I do not love the style.

No matter; it will grow. That's what hair does.

It's after 11, and I'm restless and bordering on cranky.

Three days of not going to the gym are taking a toll.

Also, I really don't like my haircut, and I'm pretty sure nothing can be done other than let it grow out. I look like I had a nervous breakdown with safety scissors. Whatever .

Okay, that's a very ...graphic way to describe a haircut. And I believe I can imagine exactly what it looks like.

Can you do something quick and simple to change the style? A hair band or scarf, pin it up...?

There's barely enough to pin up, except for the piece that keeps falling in my face. I like the way you think, though.
