Everstorm Re-Forged: Irons in the Fire

My weight finally dropped after last week's annoying inflation.  I am very happy with where it is now; it shows that I actually continued to lose weight last week and the scale is a big, fat liar.

I am extra glad for the morale boost because I have been stressing over meeting my parents for breakfast tomorrow.  To accommodate for my father's disability, we are going to a breakfast buffet so we can be in and out quickly.  This means that most of the options will involve syrup or sausage gravy.  I will do my best to make good choices while still enjoying the outing.  At least having a positive outlook going in makes me less like to say "screw this diet, I want to eat my weight in cinnamon rolls and sausage". 🤪

The scale can definitely be a big fat liar! If I weigh myself more than once in a single day, I've gotten numbers as far apart as an entire 8 pounds before. However, my son loves weighing himself and when he hopped on this morning, it said he's 52 pounds and the pediatrician weighed him at 51.6 back on January 2nd so I feel like it's (probably) not that my scale is dying. So while it could have been things like a bit of water retention, it could actually just be scale weirdness too.

I hope you enjoy the breakfast with your parents!

Dad had to cancel.  He's not doing well 😞

I was toying around with watercolor and was really happy with the color I got into this raven.  (Drawing not mine, just the color).

I'm sorry your Dad isn't well. That's rough stuff.

It is.  He was a Marine and a marathon runner and my hero.  It's hard to see him so fragile now.

My weight is a little up as of today, but that is completely expected.

Ever since I found out that scale measurements are the sorts of things that can fluctuate depending on what elevation I'm at, I've decided not to take them too seriously.

Sending some healing vibes your way for your dad. My dad was a Marine, too, so I recognize that "it's hard to see him fragile like this" experience.

Sorry about your dad.

Thank you.  Me, too.  Hopefully he will be doing better later this week and we can try again.  I know he hates being stuck at the house all the time.

What?!?  I mean, I get gravitational theory, but the difference is enough at elevation to significantly effect weight?  That's wild.

I love the coloring you did with the watercolors, and also the subject matter. I'm a huge fan of birds, particularly crows.

I like the almost blacks on the crow. Excellent. I hope your dad feels better and you can have breakfast.

Thank you and thank you.  I think ravens are cool, too.

Thank you.  He thought he was doing better, so we went this morning.  Just the drive over wore him out, though, so I don't think he enjoyed himself much.  I mean, he liked the food, but he wasn't able to join the conversation much and had to leave fairly early.  I am glad we got to treat him out, but I wish we had been able to catch one of his "good" days.  Parkinson's sucks.

I didn't struggle as much with food choices as I thought.  The problem was more that I didn't much care for any of the food on offer rather than wanting to eat all of it.  Even the massive dessert display (yes, at breakfast) didn't really tempt me.  All things considered, I think I did okay.

Glad to hear you got to head out with him for a bit at least! It is so hard to watch loved ones struggle with something as devastating as Parkinson's. If you ever want to chat "behind closed doors" and not out in public like this, my DMs are always open 🤗

(Also I giggled a little bit internally at the idea of a massive dessert display for breakfast, but to be fair, I do enjoy dessert-masquerading-as-coffee, so I suppose it's not all that different?)

Honestly, a lot of things that pass for breakfast in the American diet are thinly veiled desserts (muffins, danish, cinnamon rolls, waffles, etc) but this place went full on brownies and carrot cake and ice cream sundaes.  My kids loved it 😂  I managed to stop at once slice of banana bread.  The desserts didn't even appeal, which makes me want to check my temperature lol.  I have noticed that I have little to no interest in sweets lately.  Even when I think I want it, it's more that I don't want to be left out than that I actually want the dessert.  Not sure what caused the change, exactly (better meal timing, maybe?).  Not going to look a gift horse in the mouth, though.

I won't lie, it's bad.  And just as bad is that his medication is very irregular about controlling his symptoms.  Sometimes he is almost normal and other times the meds seem not to work at all.  You never know with each dose which one you will get.  The doc has been pressuring him to have brain surgery, but that is super scary and the results aren't guaranteed, either.

Oh shit. I would be super scared of brain surgery, too, even if I knew the results were guaranteed. I'm so sorry, what a burden.

Gonna echo the others. My dad was an Airman and a farmer, and he moves along really great for someone his age, but he's also status-post a heart attack and he's got some pulmonary issues to go with it. Seeing him now struggle to walk up a hill... it's kind of hard to watch and be there for, even as it's all I want to do.

So, yeah, I get it.

Also, hey, your coloring is really pretty. Good work!

Thank you.  Just taking it one day at a time.

It is eye-opening, at least, to my own health concerns.  I have become way more committed to improving my health as I am againg so that (to the extent I can control it) I can be stronger longer for my kids.

Thanks!  I have been feeling very artsy lately.  I joined Inktober 52 (challenge to make one drawing in response to a weekly prompt all year), plus playing with the watercolor paint in my adult coloring art book.

This week's Inktober prompt was shadow ( and yes, I actually drew this one this time 😆)

Yesterday, I started working on this antique door.  Needs more work on the stone, though 20230119_190805.thumb.jpg.11c134ae8ca48f57ace31fe442b0e033.jpg

I am definitely starting to feel the drag of the caloric deficit...or maybe the late nights of reading 👀  Anyway, I have been fairly lethargic the past couple days.  Deadlifts still happened this morning, but the workout was pretty much a slog fest.  Looking forward to getting some sleep this weekend, at least.

Sleep is good. I definitely  can't get away with less sleep while on a deficit. Hopefully it helps.

Lovely details on the door. I hope some pep returns to you over the weekend!

Thanks!  I love how the weathering turned out on the door.  Just need to figure out how to do the same on the stone 🤔

Yes, I have definitely been delinquent on getting to bed at a reasonable hour this week.  I did get to sleep in this morning, amd it seems to have helped.

Week 3 round up:

Weight:  -3 lbs (total)

Food: 93%

MAP: 100%

Movement: who even knows anymore

Reflection: 100%

Food goals had that small wobble because of eating out.  I actually managed to stick to my calories that day, but didn't quite hit my protein goal.   This week has been a little tougher with food in general, because my food prep keeps getting eaten.  I guess I need to prepare larger quantities to account for my husband and son looking for easy protein, as well.  I have started some prep stuff today and plan to do more tomorrow.   I also want to tweak the macros on my breakfast a bit to front load carbs for my morning workouts more, especially as the fatigue is starting to set in.

I have completely dropped the ball on tracking movement snacks.  I definitely do some every day, but I am probably falling short of the target hour on the days I also do MAP.  So, this week, I will make a point of recording my movement sessions here to keep myself accountable.   Starting now:

Walk 1 hour

Garden 15 minutes

Pull: 1 min

The fire is definitely getting hotter.  My plan is to run the intensive heating phase for 7 weeks total, meaning I am almost halfway through.  Just a few more weeks of limited food choices and dragging through my workouts.  I got this. 🔥⚔️🔥

Is there any possibility of husband and son doing some prep work themselves? You'd all win if they did.

Honestly,  they both typically do cook for themselves, which is why I had some expectation that my prep would be, you know, mine.  I guess they have been eating more of my stuff lately because I have been reviving some old recipes in the hunt for high protein meals, so they are excited to have those things again?  I just would like to know ahead of time if they think they will want some so I can account for that when I plan meals.  Making extra is far easier than cooking more frequently.
