Baselines

 

Once again I've created a Roadmap for 2023 and posted in my Battle log.  It'll be the foundation and outline for all of my challenges this year, hopefully getting me to the desired destination.  I didn't get to the destination last year but I did get closer in some respects.  Here's to hoping for a little bit closer this time around the sun.  

 

The foundation for this year is sticking to some daily and weekly goals, regardless of other challenge goals.  Some of these goals are old hat and some are new.  I won't be able to just jump in and hit all these goals from the get go; that's why it's a roadmap.  It's a journey.  For this challenge I'll just start by sticking to the basics and measuring my baselines.  However this challenge turns out, I expect the end of the year to be an improvement.  

 

Dailies

  • Start the day with water (or other non soda approved liquids)
  • Fast 15 hours
  • Eat a freggy
  • Move daily 
  • Read
  • Tidy for 5 minutes (or purge 1 item)

 

Weeklies

  • Meal Plan
  • Batch cook
  • 150 minutes cardio
  • strength train 2x
  • Stretch/yoga 2x

 

⭐In addition to the daily and weekly goals, I'll also be exploring lifehacks to help manage pitfalls that derail from my lifestyle.  Any occurrence of one of the pitfalls triggers a life hack.  Once triggered, I must attempt some means of balancing that pitfall with my lifestyle goals.  Then simply record and reflect here.

⭐First day of the year and a Life Hack is triggered already!  DDG's family had their Christmas get together on the 1st.  It's just the typical afternoon potluck affair.   It was soups and apps themed.   I brought my Christmas potato soup and a dessert, a banana cream pudding dish.   It was late enough in the day that I couldn't quite fast until we met, and even then, it seems we never eat right away anyway.  But it was early enough in the day that I didn't want to eat another meal before going.  So, the life hack I attempted for this holiday event was: 

Fast and Freggy

 

I fasted for 15 hours and then broke my fast with some fruit to hold me over until lunch with family.  I was hungry when we got there but not starving.  I graved on some apps until it was time to eat properly.  Luckily, I was really only interested in eating the soup I brought and some of the apps.  I did have a decent helping of the dessert and it was amazing.  Not as much of it was eaten as I had hoped so we ended up bringing a bunch home.  We left around 4 and I was satisfied, maybe a little full, but definitely not overly full. 

 

I'd say the hack was useful but would have been less helpful in the face of tons of potluck options that I wanted to try.   However, even in the face of tons of yummy options I still think it would help, maybe just less so in another environment.   Overall I'd rate this life hack 8/10, would definitely do again but results may vary.

Week 1 weekly meal plan is completed.  I wanted to make a ham just to have the leftovers to make havarti, fig, and leftover ham quesadillas.  It was a concoction we came up with one Christmas when we used a fig glaze for the ham.  It was delicious.  I didn't think we'd have time since Sunday is usually batch cooking day but we were busy with the holiday festivities.  DDG reminded me that we also had Monday off, Thank you!!  So we made a ham with fig and orange glaze to have during the week in quesadillas.  We also ended up bringing a fair share of potato soup back home from the family get together so having enough food for the week is not a problem.  We still may have to freeze some of the ham.  So potato soup and ham all week until pizza day on Friday.  Then Saturday is left open for splurge day.  

 

Sunday I hung out a little with Peach and I showed her the RingFit game.  We alternated turns and had a lot of fun.  I didn't do a great job of keeping track of time but I counted 20 minutes towards cardio for my half of the activity.  I also did 50 squats and some number of arm exercises so I counted it as a day of strength training too.  I spent another 15 minutes playing on my own Monday and counted it as cardio only.  I was pretty exhausted Monday.  I don't think I've completely recovered my energy from my illness last week.  This week of work might be brutal since I've been getting about 10 hours of sleep a night and that just doesn't happen when I have to get up for work.

Tuesday - 6/6 goals met

 

Fasting was easy.  Drinking water first was easy since my throat was a little sore.  3 servings of freg all day.  Nope 4.  Getting my reading done was also a no brainer. 

 

When I got home from work I salted the driveway.  I counted that as tidying for the day since it's still technically house maintenance and took awhile.  I did also make the bed.  I was feeling a little poorly still and tired so I decided to do some restorative yoga.  I grabbed something from Darebee and did that and counted it for my move goal and one of my weekly stretches.  

 

We binge watched some Youtube videos on the Battle of the Bulge.  The day before we watched the series from The Operations Room, last night from their sister channel.  I suspect tonight we'll start watching Band of Brothers again.

Wednesday - 4/6 goals met.

 

And the streak is busted.  There was some drama at work and I found it tiresome.  I have been extra tired lately as my body continues to try to fight something off.  So when I got home from work I didn't feel like doing anything.  No movement and no tidying.  I didn't do shoulder PT either.  

 

The rest of the day was decent.  I snacked a little heavily in the afternoon at work.  I did start with some freggies but then paired clementines with some baked chips.  Then I took some bits of a decadent peanut butter cookie.  In retrospect, it wasn't really that much and I attribute it to the drama stress and tiredness.    I barely met my hydration goal.  I got busy at work right away and never filled my water bottle.  But I had some crystal light left over from the day before so I finished that and drank some of the crystal light I brought to work before having any diet pop.   

 

Dinner was leftovers.  I reheated some ham and made some hawaiian bread sliders and then had half of a baked potato with cheese and then some homemade creamed corn on the side.  DDG finished off the other potato and the last of the beef and gravy to top it.  DDG and I did finish off the banana pudding dessert so that's no longer an obstacle. 

 

We did indeed start watching Band of Brothers again but only after watching some Youtube about the imploding House votes.  We're rewatching Band of Brothers but pairing it with the Operations Rooms episodes that cover different battles as they come up in the series.

Thursday - 6/6 goals met.

 

It was a struggle to get all goals in.  I was just tired.  I had some time to hang with Qbert so we played some RingFit.  He was a good cheerleader and I ended up doing 45 minutes when I had only planned on 20.   I meant to tidy at that time too but playing took more than anticipated so i put it off until right before bed.  Then I sorted some clothes in my floordrobe to clean that up a bit.  5 minutes made quite a difference.  

 

Dinner was leftovers.  I had a killer quesadilla with the leftover ham and some havarti cheese.  DDG finished off the soup.  I had some mac and cheese Peach had left in the fridge.  And we had green beans for my one and only freggy of the day.

Friday - 5/6 goals met. 
 

fasting was a bust because donuts. I enjoyed those donuts for about 15 minutes and then they were gone. Then I felt awful for a couple hours. Why do I do this?  Donuts. 
 

Peach had a doctors appointment around lunch time so I planned to grabbed Jimmy John’s on the way back to work and eat grapes with it. That would have been one of only few freggies for the day. It is pizza night and we don’t eat freggies with our pizza. Peach and I decided to stop at a deli instead and eat together. There were no freggies sides and I didn’t have any on my sammich.   I wasn’t too hungry yet because of donuts but the half sandwich seemed smaller than a kid sandwich so I got the full. And ate it all.  And chips. It was so delicious.  Then I was so stuffed I didn’t have room for an after freight snack. 
 

Now being in danger of having no freggies, and feeling quite full and my jeans quite tight, pizza night got nixed.  Instead I had a couple ham and havarti Hawaiian sliders, some grapes, and some of the leftover Mac and cheese. I passed the Mac and cheese to DDG to finish once I was full. And that is how the 1 freggy a day rule can make the difference between a bad day and an epically bad day. 
 

I wanted to get some yoga done in the evening but Peach was hanging out the room I do yoga. I told her I would be in there and she asked to do yoga with me. So we reached picked a yoga Darebee workout and we did both of them together. It was fun.

Saturday - 5/6 goals met

 

We had all our kids over for our final Christmas celebration.  I focused on fasting for 15 hours but was busy doing other things until it everyone was over and it was time to eat.  I didn't drink any water and had a soda right away with the snacks I put out.  My kids and DDG's haven't had a lot of opportunity to hang out together but everyone seemed to have a good time with gift opening.  I ate a number of Christmas cookies and then plenty of Doritos and a sausage nacho cheese dip.   

 

I had tentatively planned to use up an extra pound of ground sausage that I ordered by accident and some fingerling potatoes that need to get used but we were both quite tired of the sausage from the nacho cheese dip and the thought of having it for dinner wasn't appealing.  Peach got me a wooden pizza paddle so had wanted to at least have frozen pizzas to have an opportunity to use it.  But by dinnertime no one was hungry enough for dinner.  Peach skipped dinner entirely.  DDG and I had toasted english muffins.  I made mine into a sandwich with a fried egg and some cheese then had a couple of clementines on the side to get my freggy in.  

 

I figured I needed to get 30 minutes of cardio in to make my weekly goal so I played RingFit.  I'm enjoying the game well enough but it's unreliable as a cardio workout.  Sometimes the cardio intensity isn't high enough, sometimes it just ends up being more strength based than cardio.  This one did have me quite winded by the end so it worked out.

Sunday - 6/6 goals met

 

Smashed my goals on Sunday.  I didn't think I'd make my fasting goal since dinner the night before was quite late but by the time I slept in and then made 'breakfast' it was right at about 15 hours.  I used up most of those potatoes and diced them up, par boiled them, and then fried them to make hashbrowns.  Then I just cooked up some back and scrambled eggs and made breakfast skillets.    

 

DDG and I had been talking about getting back out for a walk.  It was been a very long time.  The weather was nice enough Sunday so we planned to go at the warmest part of the day.  The lake we walk at circles a lake, except at one end, the path doesn't actually go all the way around the lake.  The path goes up to a busy street, with no sidewalk and only a narrow muddy shoulder.   A couple years ago the added a floating bridge to cover that end so people didn't need to walk on the street.  But now that it's winter the bridge is out for the season.   The parks and rec dept had planned to drain the lake for some construction but it looks like they waited until it froze over first.  The whole thing was ice but didn't seem like there was much water.  We debated crossing over the lake but I was skiddish about the ice so we opted for the busy road.  Long story short, it added quite a bit of distance to our walk.  What is usually a 3.1+ walk was 4.2 instead.   The distance isn't too bad but after 3 months without any walking it was a lot and we were beat.    it took us 1:45.  

 

I wasn't really up for cooking dinner but knew if I didn't we'd resort to pizza and I would really rather having something a little lighter.  So we went ahead with the planned batch cooking and made chicken stir fry.  It was pretty tasty.

Weekly Summary

 

Week 1 had 8 days.  I usually start on Mondays but I didn't want to exclude Sunday 1/1 so it's just part of this week.  

I aced the freggy and the reading goals getting all 8 days.  All other daily goals I only missed 1 each.  

 

I somehow managed all the weekly goals too.  Batch cooking and meal planning are easy marks.  I was concerned about getting all the fitness in since my 2022 habit had already faltered and the 2023 goal was more than 2022.  But I managed 2 strength workouts and 2 yoga workouts and then 215 our of 150 minutes (across 8 days) of cardio.   Our Sunday walk going over an hour longer than expected really pushed that over the edge!  

 

I even tackled one potential life hack with decent results.  

 

Weight went up 2 pounds, which is not ideal.  But last week's batch cooking was the ham and eating it all week isn't the healthiest option.  Tons of sodium and I had trouble with portion sizes.  Week 2 is chicken stir fry with tons of freggies so hopefully it'll be a better week.  I'm really trying to turn things around without resorting to logging food again.  

 

Batch cooking is completed for week 2 but the meal plan is still up in the air.  We are trying to plan things with 3 of the kids, separately so we are waiting on them to make decisions.  It would take all week to figure that out!

I figured I needed to get 30 minutes of cardio in to make my weekly goal so I played RingFit.  I'm enjoying the game well enough but it's unreliable as a cardio workout.

I agree with this. I often create a workout outside the game and do that.  Dammit, I should go do that. You and Tank are being annoyingly inspirational today 🤣

Sodium alone will make that number go up. Eat a banana and drink some green tea and you’ll be okay ❤️

I was thinking about that too.  I could come up with some strength routines but cardio is more difficult with no gym membership, no treadmill/elliptical, and refusing to walk on icy streets.  I was thinking of looking for a dancing game instead?

Yes!  This week I'm focusing on lots of water and lower sodium meals (Hmmm... then remembers I made stir fry sauce with loads of soy sauce.  No matter.) This week will be better.

The good news, we have heard back from the 3 kids we were waiting on.  The bad news is that I now have 3 dinners out planned for this week!   Tonight I'm taking Qbert out to run some errands to get ready to go back to school and we'll grab dinner out.  (This will also include a come to jesus meeting about grades and studying).  Thursday DDG and I driving to next town over to take Luigi out for dinner.  Saturday Peach and I are getting pedicures and grabbing dinner.   That's 3 life hack events plus Friday night pizza night for 4 in one week.   So I've decided to initiate a pre-emptive Life Hack for Friday night pizza night! 

 

⭐ Just Don't Do it!

 

That's right.  Just skipping a pitfall is an option too.  I don't want to skip meaningful occasions and spending quality time with our kids is definitely on the list.  So to make room for that, pizza night is cancelled this week.

Monday - 4/6 goals met

 

I caved in the morning and grabbed some breakfast from the cafeteria so fasting was a bust.  I had some hashbrowns and some sausage links.  They were delicious.  I was prepared to work around that and have a perfectly suitable day.  But planning and teenagers don't necessarily go hand in hand.  My weekly meal planning was waiting on the kids yesterday.  I wasn't hungry at lunch time so I put it off a couple hours and ate in the afternoon.  I could have had made a swap in included some grapes into my lunch but I wasn't concerned about getting freggies in since dinner was freggy dense.  But then the plans started to solidify with the kids and Qbert picked going out to dinner last night.   We went to a burger place.  There were veggies on the menu but they are rarely good.  Plus there were tots on the menu.  One doesn't just turn down tots.  So it turned out to also be a freggy free day.  And a life hack event!  

 

🌟I struggled with finding a way to mitigate going out to eat, partially because Qbert didn't pick a place until we were already out and driving around.   Then I waited until I could look at the menu.  I still wanted to enjoy the food so I opted for a two-fold approach.

Go Slow and Check in

 

This particular burger joint is like the ultimate craft burger joint.  4 pages of just burgers on the menu.   They have burgers with BBQ on it,  or mac and cheese (or both), bacon jam, peanut butter, ones with donuts for buns or grilled cheese sandwiches for buns, and the list goes on.  I still wasn't overly hungry so I wasn't even looking to faceplant a burger.   I had decided to Go Slow and Check in and try to notice early when I was full and just stop eating.  I had decided on a beer cheese pub burger (with croutons even) and figured I just wouldn't eat the whole thing.  But then at the last minute I thought that sounded just too aggressive so I changed to a simple bacon and cheese chicken burger.   I had trouble with the slow down and check in.  I started slow but then just started eating checking in a little less often than I expected.  But I ended up eating only about 2/3 of the burger.  The tots portion was small so I was able to eat all them without feeling guilty or too full.   I'm sure it was still much higher in calories than what I would have eaten at home, not to mention the loads of sodium, but Qbert and I had that come to jesus meeting about school and had a really nice talk.   Overall I think each life hack was helpful but only in a supplemental way.  Each on their own might not have been enough but the combination worked nicely.   6/10 for each.
