Today is the last day of National Banned Books week in the US. So I'm going to post this resource here, that a friend shared with me a while back, that makes it very easy for anyone who wants to read a banned book, to do so. :)

It is pleasing that you and @Everstorm are nearing book 7, not just because my odds of the golden bookmark for series completions go up, but also because I have thoughts that start around book 7 that I cannot reveal sooner. :D

My library just rewarded my hold patience with an audiobook of Lies Sleeping.  I weirdly cannot wait to start my commute this morning 😲

Wow.

Seriously. Wow.

I really liked book 7 a lot. Heck of a journey from book 1, in all sorts of ways. And it feels like Ben Aaronovitch has loosened up a little, and is having a bit more fun with it. It flows a bit more freely and is going unexpected ways, with the characters doing some very character driven things. I'm not certain the book isn't a little bit messier than some of the others because of that, but I don't think that's a bad thing. It works, and its possible untidiness works. And in some cases, is part of the point.

I think book 7 was the one where I finally understood the vibe and themes of the series, and went from "these are pleasant and I like them, but they don't grab me in a really memorable way" to "these are great and I want them all". The whole series started to read kinda different, like it clicked finally.

Oh! Oh! I forgot. I have more comment on the issue you raised now that you've finished the book. :D

Spoiler

So you've seen now exactly how many of the surviving magical groups in Britain are female-run and majority if not exclusively female (I suspect exclusively), between the Society of the Rose and the survival of the Sons of Weyland. The surviving wizard(s) of the Folly are completely, totally outnumbered by quite a large network of female groups. And it's very likely that it's Abigail who's going to be groomed for a top spot in the Folly. He's setting up a theme, which the shift in the Thames also echos: the past may have been white and male, but the future is female and multicultural.

He did the same thing in Doctor Who, both in one of his two episodes and in his novels. He handed over UNIT from the beloved Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart to a black woman, Brigadier Bambera, who is excellent and we deserved twenty years of her. (His novels also have a black female character picking up a legacy of an established white male character.) He had a really nice touch for "let's absolutely celebrate the beloved past without overlooking its flaws, and now it's 100% the women's turn".

So that's another reason I think it's more a prose flaw than a disposable female problem - he's doing the opposite of making them disposable, he's handing over the entire Newtonian magical legacy to them. It seems to be one of his major running fiction themes.

I've been on a Terry Pratchett reading kick, and I bought so many books to wrap up as Christmas presents to Cidran/myself. 😃 My best gift to him/us is Geddy Lee's Big Beautiful Book of Basses (a brilliant reward for our developing musical skills this year 🥰), and I may have cackled a bit when I wrapped it in layers of packing paper before the outermost shell of Christmas wrapping paper. 😅 It's even plastic-wrapped, so he can know he's the first to look inside. 😲

I've been binging Sarah Painter's Crow Investigations series - just finished book 3 and started 4.

I really like it, but also it feels like Ms. Painter read the Rivers of London books and then said to herself "I want to write a series like that" ... and then really wrote a series like that. If she is not heavily influenced by Aaronovitch I'll eat my sideboard. Very much London-as-character, mentions of architectural details/stylings of various buildings, and a significant character with a mother from Sierra Leone ... seriously.

Very different and interesting magic system, and I do like Lydia Crow fairly well. The dynamic of the families is complex and fascinating. I just keep getting distracted by the "wait, this is so familar ... oh, yeah, Peter Grant was here too" thing.

Decided to take the advice of the author of "Dear Fahrenheit 451" and read "Holidays on Ice" to laugh at holidays gone wrong in various ways. I'm two stories in, and I was immediately sold on this book by the Santa Land Diaries which I felt embodied perfectly the world of retail when in the midst of holiday seasons. I don't know if it's truth or fiction, but it *felt* real. As for the second one, it was a bit much? But not enough to stop me from continuing to read more.

A couple of heads-ups for everyone:

First, of we are apparently now a Club, and have a fancy tag on our thread to show for it. The 2024 thread will have the same tag, when it is posted on January 1st, in accordance with the guidelines in the new sticky thread in this forum. Please note that this doesn't mean anything as far as thread participation or reading "requirements" are concerned. We read what we want, when we want, and that is all there is to it. The club tag simply signifies that this thread is for a shared interest, not for an actual challenge of any kind.

Second, I will post the new thread at some point on January 1st. All reading resources shared in the first post of this thread will be copied over for easy reference.

Happy new 2024 to everyone, when that time comes! :)

The Great Reading Thread of 2024

“I've always believed that failure is non-existent. What is failure? You go to the end of the season, then you lose the Super Bowl. Is that failing? To most people, maybe. But when you're picking apart why you failed, and now you're learning from that, then is that really failing? I don't think so." - Kobe Bryant, 1978-2020. Rest in peace, great warrior.

Thanks for being on top of this!

I hit my reading goal for 2023 of 50 books. Currently at 51 and have a couple in progress I might finish before Sunday night. But I'm thinking about not setting a goal for 2024. It has a tendency to make reading feel like a chore when it is supposed to be a leisure activity.
