TimovieMan balances sleep and gaming

Recommended Posts

In my previous challenge, I started eating well again, and started working out again. It was a successful respawn.

Now I will just keep doing what I did, but less as an active part of the challenge. There was something that became apparent to me during the last challenge, and that will be the focus this time.

I need more sleep.

giphy.gif

Too often I go down a YouTube rabbit hole and end up at 3 am on a workday. Too often I get to bed far later than I envisioned.

And then I'm GrumpyTimo™ for a day. I don't want to be GrumpyTimo™.

On the other hand, it's starting to bug me that I'm not gaming as much as I used to. A large part of this is that the kids are getting older, and get to stay up a little longer. When they were in bed by 8 pm, I still had the entire evening. Now that they're often in bed by 8.45 instead, I have close to an hour less.

The missus then watches an episode or two of a series (and depending on the series, I do as well). But she's starting later, so she finishes later. That means the PlayStation is only available an hour later as well - and often close enough to bed time to almost not being worth it.

But no play makes Timo a GrumpyTimo™.

giphy.gif

What is the challenge?

The challenge this time is simple:

- sleep more

- game more

But it's not easy: these two things are constantly going to be at odds with each other. One generally gets sacrificed in favour of the other. So the tricky part is going to be balancing both...

What are the goals?

Sleep:

- week 0 and 1: average more than 6h 20m of sleep per night

- week 2 and 3: average more than 6h 25m of sleep per night

- week 4 and 5: average more than 6h 30m of sleep per night

Game:

- week 0-3: keep up with the Community Playthrough of The Black Mirror over at AG

- continuously: keep finishing in the top tier in the weekly "summits" in The Crew 2

- continuously: solve a nonogram each day

- anytime during the challenge: continue playing the Rusty Lake games, continue Uncharted: The Lost Legacy (so I can return the game to its owner), continue The Witcher: Enhanced Edition (so I can ultimately get to The Witcher 3), play Stray

And to make sure I keep the good habits from the previous challenge up:

Eat sensibly:

- Intermittent fasting (16+ hours), at least 6x per week

- Get the weight below 95 kg by the end of the challenge ("only" 2.85 kg to go)

Work out:

- Keep doing the DailyDare exercises

- At least 3 full bodyweight workouts per two weeks (aim for 4)

The music will continue, of course.

And what's more fitting than a song from a video game to kick off this challenge? One that references sleep, no less?

This is from the excellent adventure game "The Cat Lady", made specifically for the game by Warmer. The game is about depression and is extremely well-written, so if you haven't played it, I highly recommend it. This song comes early in the game, and kicks off at a sudden shocking moment (making the shock even greater).
It's a great song, very reminiscent of Nine Inch Nails.

Damn...I completely understand and feel this. I went almost a YEAR without really gaming. Sure, I played 2k with the kids here and there. I even attempted Minecraft with my 9yr old. But, I hadn't gamed for myself in a long ass time. That was, until I started playing Elden Ring back in January. I still haven't played that much, but that was the game that started it all. I pray and hope you can find the balance. And when you do, please share tips & tricks lol! Asking for a friend...

Odd day today.

Worked from home but couldn't log into the system this morning. Not even my work mail opened (and it's Google, so wtf?). But I could access YouTube and other things.

Suddenly I'm added to a WhatsApp group with all the colleagues. There'd been a cyber attack against our firm this weekend. The whole system was down (intentionally, by IT) while they were getting everything secured again. The cyber attack even made the local news.

Technical unemployment, but with the need to stay on call, just in case they fix the issue and we could work again. They couldn't yet. We've been asked to work from home tomorrow as well, and to just remain "on hold" until the system's up again. Part of it (everything Google related) is up again, so technically I can work. The only thing is that the issues that need to be handled can only be accessed in the system itself, so while I can handle the issues, I don't know what the issues are as long as the system is down. So, no work.

This means that I spent my day doing a 20-minute walk between two meetings that got cancelled, an hour long walk before my lunch break, a nap during my lunch break, a workout in the afternoon, and shaving and trimming my beard and hair... and all this during working hours. 😁

One of the national weathermen here retired today. He'd been doing the weather on national TV every day for the past 36 years and was basically THE weather man here.

They gave him a 45-minute programme in dedication of his career.

How silly as it sounds, but I'm going to miss having him on TV. He was dorky, used a lot of silly word plays, but he was a solid weather man, and often had interesting tidbits about space or the ISS or whatnot.

I mainly mention this because if you ask me for an example of someone who clearly loves his job, he's the first guy to come to mind. In that regard alone, the guy's an inspiration - if someone ever got to turn his hobby into his profession it's him. And that's part of what made him so likeable, I guess...

Anyway, here's the tracking for today:

Monday, March 20th

Movement:

- 20-minute walk

- one-hour walk

- full bodyweight workout

Spoiler

- Warm-up:
30 jumping jacks
10 incline push-ups

2 minutes shoulder taps (DailyDare)

- Workout (2 circuits):
2x10 one-leg calf raises
1 chin-up
10 leg-assisted chin-ups
20 squats
10 push-ups
2x10 one-leg Romanian deadlifts
10 scapular pull-ups
10 hanging knee raises
20 wall slides
10 leg raises

Was *so* close to a second chin-up during my first circuit.

giphy.gif

Self-care:

- Ate sensibly

- Intermittent fasting: 26 hours

- Blood pressure meds: taken

- Elbow care: iced & stretched

- Sleep: 6h 17m*

* Including the lunch break power nap.

No gaming yet. Unless you count the three nonograms I solved today. 😇

"A nonogram a day keeps the doctor away!" 😅

Here's a song by Iron Maiden. It's a perfect example of why singer Bruce Dickinson is nicknamed "The Human Air-Raid Siren".
Even after the thousandth time, I'm still amazed by how long he holds the note during "running loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow" around the one-minute mark. Only to follow up with another such note (albeit shorter) and ending that on a scream. Oof. How big are this guy's lungs? And he's still performing this exactly like that live. And he's in his mid-60s!

I don’t know why I can’t remove the spoiler bar. Weird. Anyway…

I absolutely love parasocial relationships like that, where you get to see someone just do their thing, consistently, for “fabric of reality” lengths of time. I am glad that he got some recognition for his dedication. I feel like there aren’t many of us who will rack up 10, 20, 30 years at a single job anymore, especially jobs we love. That’s special. Thank you for mentioning it, it has made me smile. :D

We had a weatherman like that. He retired a while back and everyone was kinda sad to see him go. I absolutely hate his replacement. Also seen them live (in 2004 or 5). Brilliant show, fantastic frontman. Funny too.

I remember him calling out to someone in the crowd who left to go to the bar. Bruce Dickinson went: "Hey! Where is that guy going? Do NOT serve him beer! Death to false metal!" 🤘

Got a good chuckle out of that. 😁

Even the weathermen from the major competing national channel were at the tribute here. He was that iconic. Sounds like your weatherman was similar.

Technically unemployed and on stand-by.

I had about two hours of work (mails and doing whatever I could in the parts of the system that were already accessible), and the rest was just waiting for an "all clear" that didn't come.

I'll be on stand-by tomorrow as well.

Of course that meant that - for the second day in a row - I got to take a nap and go on a long walk during my working hours. Even got a couple of hours of game time in. While being paid for it! 😎

I'm generally not troubled to do small personal things during my working hours, if it only takes five or ten minutes or so. I have no issues dropping the kids off at school (it's only 300 meters away) while clocked in, for instance.

But it's still a little uncomfortable in this magnitude. Especially since I could do something right now if I only had access to one of the systems that's down (not even the main one). Or if the people that need their data would send their requests via mail.

It is quite useful for the challenge, though. 😁

When I was 17 a classmate of mine passed away. He had to go to the hospital for something minor, fell into a coma, and died a couple of days later. They never found out what happened - speculation is that it was a healthcare-associated infection but we'll never know for sure. He'd been my classmate throughout primary school, and was a team mate at the table tennis club back then.

They played this next song at his funeral. It was the moment that broke me then... I still can't listen to it without thinking back to him.

And it's one of my favourite songs as well...
