Artemis Prime's Book of Spells

Recommended Posts

Happy Spring, nerds! My plans for this challenge changed last night because we decided to postpone our California trip to September. So instead of frantically trying to get my barn ready for my horses before I head west, I can take a more relaxed pace as I continue my tour through the D&D classes with the Wizard class! And holy cow are there a lot of spells, guys. I tend to stick to the martial classes when I play, and now I'm remembering why. Even trying to limit myself for this challenge, I may have chosen too much, but I don't think it's as much as it looks like, and if it does end up being too much, I'll adjust. But for starters:

Subclass: Bladesinging

I shall continue with the music of the iron with my 3x5 push/pull split. I think I may sub out chin ups for dumbbell rows for now, with one set of AMAP chin ups just to keep my hand in.  I am going to shoot for 2 workouts per week, and since I can pretty reliably get a weekend workout in, that means I just need 1 workout during the week, which sounds very reasonable.

Spellbook: Writing

What else would a spellbook be? I've been neglecting my novel and I want to get back to drafting. For this challenge, I'm more concerned with redeveloping my habit of regular writing than I am with actual output, so the goal is to write for 20 minutes/day, 5 days a week. I'll mostly be doing this on my lunch break, playing catch up on the weekends for days I have plans during lunch.

Cantrips: Daily Habits

I need to get a little structure back in my daily routine, so I am going to bookend my days with 2 cantrips, which I've found enormously beneficial in the past when they were regularly established habits.

Prestidigitation: Make the Bed Messy bed, messy head and all that. There really is something about making my bed first thing in the morning that sets my whole day up for success. And it's a really easy, simple thing to do, I've just gotten away from it. So, time to get it back.

Shape Water: Skin Care I'm not always very good about removing all my makeup and moisturizing at night, and not only is it rough on my skin, it also leaves my day somewhat incomplete. So 9:30 every night, I'll do my full skin care routine and put myself in the right frame of mind for a nice, restful night in my neatly made bed.

Spells:

Misty Step
I had planned to pause my cardio goal, but that's when I thought I had a cross country trip in my near future. With that postponed, I can resume my goal of running a 5k again this year. The goal for this challenge is 3 cardio sessions a week, and at least one must be a run.

Private Sanctum
The clutter has gotten out of control, guys. And I keep making the excuse that I have an apartment's worth of stuff shoved into one room, but it doesn't matter, I can't deal with it anymore. And I haven't rolled any dice for this challenge yet! So each day I will roll a d20 and clean for that amount of time. Contrary to how I did my dice rolls last challenge, I can fulfill minutes on later days, but only within that week. So if I roll high on a busy day, I can make it up later, but once Monday rolls around I'm starting over with a clean slate.

Mordenkainen's Magnificent Mansion

Even though I'm not nearly as crunched for time as I thought I'd be, I still need to get my barn done. I'm planning on going on a church retreat in the middle of June, so I'd really like to have my horses moved in by Memorial Day to have a couple weeks to iron out the wrinkles before I go away. That should be easily doable, but when I start trying to project too far into the future with this barn, I get myself overwhelmed and confused, so I'll be sharing goals in bite-sized chunks here.

So, it looks like a lot, but subclass and cantrips are somewhat established habits that just need a bit of reinforcement and spellbook is for fun, so it's really just 3 major goals. But like I said, I'll adjust if I start to go under.

For zero week, I'm not going to track much or get too worked up about getting things done. Just going to start picking away at the clutter and my barn goal for the week is to get the fascia board up on the lean-to.

I really like this idea of rolling a d20 for cleaning. Maybe I should try something similar.

Honestly, it looks like a lot... but a lot of it involves small things that don't take much time. Like, writing for 20 minutes or making your bed. I think it's doable. It looks like a lot, but it doesn't seem unreasonable to me.

Tell me about it! I started playing with druid and then cleric. They're almost as bad for spell options, but worse than wizards because you choose from all of them every day what spells to have - not just from what's in your spellbook. 😅

So exciting that your barn is almost done! Can't wait to see the finished product.

That makes two of us!!! Honestly, it's not really going to be close to done by Memorial Day, and really I'm probably going to spend the rest of my life fiddling with this building. But I do think it will be done enough to move the horses in. Walls & stalls, basically, is what I'm aiming for by the end of May.

Morning, all! Kind of a rainy day here today, but I'm still feeling pretty springy. Last night I folded my clean laundry so the dirty laundry could get moved off the floor and into the basket, and just that one thing made a huge difference. Note to self - put clothes away! I'm usually good about not dumping clothes on the floor, unless I haven't put the clean clothes away and then I have nowhere else to put them.

I did not do my skincare last night. At 9:30 I was on the couch and my cat was sleeping on me and by the time she moved I just wanted to go straight to bed. Once this challenge officially starts, I will take responsibility for these types of things, but it's still zero week and I can totally blame it on the cat.

I did make my bed this morning, though!

Going to try to run some errands on my lunch  break, and dinner with my sister tonight, so probably no writing today, but I do intend to clear my desk chair off.

Well, that's about as unanimous as it gets! What is it about cats? I will stare down a 1200 pound horse until they admit that I'm in charge around here, but a 10 pound cat? She totally bosses me around.

Went out with my sister last night for margaritas, which isn't our usual MO, but it was a lot of fun, and my steak bowl was delicious, although the leftovers look a bit sad today. Nothing really happened challenge-wise, although I did return a book I borrowed from her, so that's one tiny bit of decluttering done. And an administrative note for once this challenge kicks off in earnest - when I am home in the evening, the goal is to get up and do my skincare routine at 9:30, but on nights I don't get home until later (which is pretty much just sister nights, usually) it still counts full points if I do the routine before going to bed. The time is just a helpful part of making it a regular habit, the important part is doing it.

Bed made this morning!

A friend of ours has a mastiff/pit bull mix, and I will wrestle with him until he snarls and growls like he is about to eat my face off. And then when I say "Settle!" he stops and sits like a good boy. But when my cat wants to play, I'm good until those claws come out and I shriek and even apologize to him like I was the one who started it.

Side note: Have you read the "A Dream of a Thousand Cats" issue of Neil Gaiman's Sandman comics? The Netflix production isn't bad, but the comic is... wonderfully unsettling, in that it kind of explains why cats intimidate us. Let me know if you want a TL;DR version if you haven't read it.

Happy Friday, peeps! I had a pretty great evening - had dinner with a family from my church and then played Taco, Cat, Goat, Cheese, Pizza and Dutch Blitz with them. Meant I was later getting home than I thought I'd be and didn't get any challenge stuff done, but hey, it's zero week!

A kitten goes to a gathering of cats and hears an older, wiser cat (called the Prophet) speak about a dream she had in which the Cat of Dreams appears to her and tells her of an earlier world in which giant cats ruled over much smaller humans, and even domesticated them and hunted them for sport. Then thousands of the humans gather and collectively dream of a world in which humans rule and cats are pets. This collective dream is so powerful that it comes true. So the final premise of the comic is that all of the gathered cats hope to dream of a return to the world in which cats rule over humans.
