KB Girl on a trip down memory lane

Recommended Posts

Hi friends!

Last challenge I focused on asking for and receiving help and I made extra sure to appreciate how good I have it. My therapy appointments are ongoing but will be every other week from now on. I also actively reminded myself that something is better than nothing. I will continue that this challenge and I have chosen two things to focus on;

1. Memories

Making new ones and honouring the existing ones!

  • After all the focus on my own mental health the past couple of months it's time to refocus on what I'm trying to be healthy for; my kids. Every day I will make sure to consciously spend some memorable time with both my 6yo and my 3yo. I might tell stories, or I will just give it a check mark.
  • I've wanted to sort through all my digital photos for years now and I saw someone else do it by searching their photo library by the current date and then going through all the years of that date and sorting the photos. I love the idea and I'm going to try to do that every day, then I'll be done in a year- not very fast, but faster than not doing anything. I may share some of the best ones.

2. Fitness therapy

We all know how essential this is for mental health, both in terms of achieving goals and by the simple blessing of moving our bodies.

  • I want to do something to work towards my wannabe athlete goals every day.
  • My year goal of cycling 5000km has been going pretty well, my daily average has been great lately. I have however been getting in the habit of leaving my electric cargo bike in the highest gear. For this challenge I will go down a gear if I go above 25km an hour and I may go up again if I can't keep it above 22km an hour.

Bonus goals;

  • Sort through my closet and get rid of clothes I'm not wearing anymore.
  • All the gardening.
  • Learning to cook with the new harvests I've got, including fresh herbs (I love the idea of fresh herbs, but have very little experience using them).

The Great Reading Thread of 2023

“I've always believed that failure is non-existent. What is failure? You go to the end of the season, then you lose the Super Bowl. Is that failing? To most people, maybe. But when you're picking apart why you failed, and now you're learning from that, then is that really failing? I don't think so." - Kobe Bryant, 1978-2020. Rest in peace, great warrior.

I think this sounds like a great idea, though I'm mystified at what thing can sort through pictures by date and not have them lumped by year.

I'm torn between finding a time to just do it all at once or going shelf by shelf.

:D Oh I meant to tell you, I finally got to eat some of our purple asparagus and they were amazing! At first I thought maybe just because they're so fresh compared to store bought green ones- but we also have some green in the garden and while those were also much better than store bought they weren't quite as great as the purple. They're a little more earthy and crunchy I'd say.

My iPhone does that, but I have unfortunately found out that my iPhoto library on my laptop does not..

And very glad to have you around!

Do you have chives in your garden? I've used them in my salad dressing today and used the flowers as a bit of extra decoration. I also had my first salad leaves and bokchoi leaves from the garden :) and best of all, the kids emptied their plates!

Week 1, Day 1

Monday is my day off and it was beautiful weather! I took the girls to the garden by bike, they asked if they could take their skeelers and bike and I said yes. We also build some legos, did some reading and drawing and made some puzzles together- I think A+ for momming today.

Good to know!  When we lived in Japan, we had purple sweet potatoes.   I could not quite get used to them, and I was never sure if it was the taste or if the color was just really throwing me off.

Ah I can imagine! I planted some purple potatoes (not sweet) this year, I'm very curious what those will be like.

Week 1, Day 2

After my morning shift at work I got in a very quick training session so I could get home in time for all four of us to go to the swimming pool. It's not my hobby, but the kids had a really great time :) on the way home we dropped Jaap off at work and the kids and I were really tired so we watched quite a lot of tv before having dinner.

Week 1, Day 3

During the morning rush everything that could go wrong did. There was a blown diaper, fallen glass, items missing, bread still in the freezer, fighting kids.. and when we finally got out the door it started pouring with rain. Then I had back to back appointments until 21:00. Yay.  (mom+toddler gym class, accountant, therapy and then on to work).

Sorting photos:   it was a very looong day and I just really didn't want to x)

Making memories:   3yo (gym class)  🟡 6yo, it wasn't much but we had a really good conversation during our bike ride

Wannabe athlete:   🟡 D- today, so little time.. but I did a something.

Shifting gears:     10,9km in the pouring rain

The taxes, the therapy and a lot of items on my to do list gave me a lot of stress and anxiety. But I had a great time at work and I'm grateful for all the great people there who make it so.

I am sorry that things were soo stressful.  Mornings can be rough with little minions.  Sending hugs that things calm down and things start to fall off the to do list so some level of peace can return.

You powered through the chaos to have a pretty productive day in the end! Hope tomorrow is less stressful.

I'd consider giving yourself full points for the bike ride conversation - having a parent who is present for a proper conversation (and listens to their child) is a big deal ❤️

Thank you! I really can't blame the minions for this one, it was my own chaos mostly x)

Peace would be really good. I am actively working on not accepting any more to do's, so there is that at least.

Following! Sorting through photos by date is a really cool idea. I have to laugh (in despair) imagining implementing that strategy for my own digital camera photos - I've always been a sporadic photographer, but on the days I do shoot I tend to take hundreds of photos 😅

Ah yes I know a few hobby photographers who are exactly like that! :) for now it's ranging from 50-300 photos, it's doable. it should be.

Thanks :) that is why I wanted to at least give partial credit- but I'm really looking to improve my one on one time with them and how often I say yes to things, so I don't want to give full points- then it wouldn't be a challenge.

Week 1, Day 4

Thursday is my other day off. In the morning my 6yo asked to read a book together, I said yes and we spend almost an hour going from book to book. The rest of the day was a stressful mess because I was trying to get places (picking up a playdate from school and delivering some stuff to my mom ) in record amounts of rain and trying to sort a taxes thing with kids around, which does not work.

Sorting photos:     though I am wondering if maybe I should do more than just delete some

Making memories:   3yo- nothing memorable   6yo

Wannabe athlete:    nope, I should have

Shifting gears:   🟡 no cycling so no shifting gears.. I was fully suited up in my rain gear and then I couldn't get the bike to function (turns out I had the battery disconnected) but I wasn't going to ride with 3 kids unsupported with that much rain.

I’m grateful that despite homeschooling my 6yo has so many friends it sometimes seems like a part time job to arrange play dates ;)

Good luck with the fitness and mental health goals. Also, home made pesto (parsley or basil, pine nuts, garlic, parmesan, olive oil and salt in the blender). Herb-packed yoghurt dip (any combination of basil, chives, parsley, etc and garlic) to go with spiced (turmeric paprika cumin lemon) pan-blackened chicken thighs and pita bread. Basil or coriander can go in thai curries and stir fries. Sage can be cooked with browned butter and cream to make a truly amayyyyzing pasta sauce. Finely chopped parsley "salad" with grated carrots and dried cranberries, lemon juice and olive oil as a side dish.
