Ranger Hal Keeps it Simple

Recommended Posts

I’m Ranger Hal. I hike, snowshoe, scramble, climb (in theory, although not recently), and do search and rescue. My current goal is to workout enough to be able to keep up with the other people who want to do those things. There have been a number of trips over the last few years where I have either been turned away because the leader didn’t think my conditioning level was where it needed to be or I decided not to even ask because I didn’t think I could keep up.

I was thinking of making this challenge about rigging and rope practice for climbing and glacier travel, in addition to continuing some sort of exercise, but I kept adding things and it no longer seemed realistic. So I'm going to keep it simple and stick to the most important thing. I need to get out and walk and hike. So that's the challenge: walk and hike lots. I got a fancy new watch that measures heart rate (and a bajillion other things; this watch has way more features than I'll ever use, but I kind of wanted one that also had an altimeter, so it came with lots of bells and whistles). I'd like to do a couple of days a week in Zones 2-3. So that's the challenge: walk or hike and report the heart rate zone.

Week 1, Sunday

Walk 4.8 miles

Zone 1

I took the new watch out for a test walk. I had a lot of fun watching my heart rate. Walking on the flat trail near my house puts me in Zone 1. I'm really excited to try it out on hiking trails where my heart rate can get much higher! Maybe I'll give that a try tomorrow.

Oh yeah, I also whacked the grass and battled blackberries (and bindweed) to clear access to my back door. Now it's only guarded by small boards with rusty nails sticking out (I should probably put them somewhere safer, lol). I also have access to my garden beds too, but they're full of weeds and I'm not sure I have motivation to get anything planted this year. It always jumps from not early enough to start seeds indoors to May so quickly.

What watch did you get? I am once again feeling the urge to get a tracker so I can play with all the data, but I'm resisting for now, so instead I'll track vicariously through you.

I got the Garmin Instinct 2S (the S is for small for my little wrists).

Week 1, Monday

Hike 4 miles

Zone all over the place

Yeah, so hiking with a group that decides to take breaks to wait and see if the late person can catch up, but also decides to hike slower for the same reason, but can't seem to keep a slow pace and keeps speeding up, is not very good for maintaining a consistent heart rate. On the uphill, I was anywhere between Zone 1 and Zone 4. I might have to arrange to be late with this group (and not have them wait for me) so I can set my own pace.

I tried to use the hiking activity on the watch, but failed to actually get it to start (I thought it was working, but when the hike was over, there was no data), so that's something to play with next time. It looks like it will tell me something about the Zones which I'm interested to see. I hope it will say how long I was in each Zone. That would be cool.

Rest days are also important. Sorry that the group hike didn’t go as desired. Hope that gets worked out for you next time.

Yes, but also it wouldn't be a bad thing to do a walk every day.

It was a good experiment. I wasn't sure what zone I would end up in and the only way to figure that out is to give it a try!

Week 1, Saturday

Hike 11 miles

Zone 3 (mostly) uphill

Staying in Zone 3 is hard when I'm going on decent uphills (slight uphills it's easier). It feels soooo slow. It's really easy for me to push into Zone 4, but when I'm on my own, I'm going to try to stick with Zone 3 and save Zone 4 for when I'm with others who want to go fast.

My watch screen protector arrived, so now I feel better about taking the watch on more adventurous trips. I would have liked to see data from Thursday's trip, but there will be more opportunities for similar stuff.

Slow, maybe, but slow walking feeds a lot of benefits back into the system and I'm sure it'll help for when you're with others who want to go to Zone 4.

I hope so. I'd like my Zone 3 to get faster, but that's going to take time, I think.

Week 1 Summary

I did 35.5 miles this week (including 2.2 miles from SAR that I didn't report above in case anyone is checking my math). That's a lot more than I've done in a long time and I'm pleased about it. It helped that the weather was pretty nice most of the week (except that day when I went with the group, but that gave me a different motivation to get out). I like the way the new watch is working out and helping me slow down when I need to. I hope to continue doing well over the next week.

Over the weekend, I discovered New Amsterdam on Netflix. This is a bad thing because I have been watching episodes until like 2 am. This is not good for my sleep.

Would it be worth it to shift it into a reward after you do your walk or hike? That is how I am handling my Critical Role engagement.

I kind of don't think so. The problem is not (currently) that I'm skipping exercise in favor of watching the show (I did a nice long walk on Sunday and the nothing on Monday was due to staying late at work to get something done and then it was too dark). It's that once I've started watching, I don't want to go to sleep. Most of the other shows I've watched recently, when it gets to midnight-ish, I tend to either get tired and find a nice stopping point at the end of an episode or fall asleep in the middle of one. This is more like those times when I'll stay up most of the night to keep reading a book. Last night, I nearly convinced myself (at 2 am) that another episode would be fine, lol!

Yeah, that is a whole different issue! :D I am going to be a bad influence, but if it were me I would just binge it all to get it over with and then pick up my routine again. That is totally how I am with a book. :D Wishing you some moderation! ;)

Yeah, with books I usually try to just get it over with, but I can usually get through a book in one or two days. And I was sort of considering it for this situation, but this show currently has 89 episodes and I'm only partway through the first season, so I'm not sure that's going to work. 😆 Thanks for the moderation wishes!
