Algorithmicpoet - Rookie Ranger, Arriving Late

Recommended Posts

Hey y'all! I'm fairly new here so this is my first challenge, but I'm gonna give it my best shot.

For some background, since the start of the year I've been focusing on weight loss and general toning, with the most recent goal of looking and feeling good at my brothers wedding. This happened very recently and worked out pretty well - but now I need to keep my momentum and also change it up a little. Hoping this challenge format will help keep me on track!

I'm gonna try bucket things into what (to me) are the three core character sheet attributes; Physical, Mental and Social. I'll be focusing on Physical but the other two should tie in nicely I hope.

Physical

I've been fairly consistent on getting exercise in over the course of this year, but I'd really like to focus in on building some muscle and improving my cardio health. To that end I've got two goals for my exercise during this challenge:

  • Figure out a good weights/strength routine and do it twice a week. I have 1kg and 3kg sets of dumb bells and a 6kg and 8kg kettlebell, it's just a case of using them consistently and well.
  • Do some sort of cardio twice a week. Jump rope, a decent walk, Beat Saber on my VR rig, anything that gets my heart rate up in those good ranges.

For both of these I need to keep my bodies abilities in mind and not over extend or damage my knees more, so that's gonna be key as much as anything.

And then one nutrition related goal:

  • Drink less alcohol when socialising. A little is fine, a lot spikes my heart rate for 24-48 hours afterwards and just isn't worth the hangover or calories.

My general nutrition is fine - I love cooking, I'm real fond of fruit and veg and I've gotten into a good routine for my day to day - so no changes needed there.

Social

One big goal here:

  • Organise and host a weekend camping get together in my garden

There's lots of smaller moving parts to this - we've just started getting our deck renovated so that needs to be finished, I need to actually finish inviting people, I need to keep the grass in check and get a lot of brambles under control . But! It's been something I've always wanted to do, and now that I live somewhere with a big enough garden (I moved way out into the country from the city centre last autumn) I really want it to happen.

Mental

One big goal, and one maintenance related:

  • Keep gardening regularly. Seeing things I've tended from small or planted from seed grow to full blown plants is crazily rewarding. Added bonus if I can eat them too.
  • Make and attend an appointment with my ADHD psych for a med review. I keep putting this off and I need to stop procrastinating on it.

Stat Boost?

My end goal is pretty fluid here! If I come out of this feeling stronger and healthier than I went in, then it's a win.

Excellent goals, and I love the idea of a weekend camping get together! My garden got cancelled this year in deference to my big building project, so I shall garden vicariously through you, if you don't mind.

I really like how you're dividing up your goals into physical, mental, and social. I may take a leaf out of your book and do something similar.

Camping in the garden sounds amazing! You'll have to tell us how it goes!

Thank you! The weekend camping idea was nicked from a friend with a huge back garden who started it during lockdown when we were allowed to meet up outside, so we'd all gather in his back garden and camp at a safe distance to hang out, which turned out to be a huge amount of fun. And please do garden vicariously, I'll try include some pics in updates ^_^

Thanks - I was wracking my brains for a good system to use and I'm used to old VtM style character sheets so that one seemed like a good bet!

And will do!

Thank you!

Ok, I know I only posted this today but it's technically 3 days in and I'm keen so - check-in!

Physical

Monday / Tuesday: Got some acceptable cardio in each day between jump rope and jumping jacks. I had no idea how *intense* jump rope can be, I swear I remember it being easier as a kid 😅

Today: Strength! Did 3 reps of waist level push-ups, door rows and squats, then with my new 3kg dumbbells did 3 reps of bicep curls, lateral raises and cross body bicep curls and 2 reps of lunge/curl combos.

Social

Pinned down a date for the camping \o/ having it written down here made me feel more accountable which definitely helped me move on it.

Mental

No major progress Monday or Tuesday but accidentally fell into doing a load of yard work this evening after work and cut back several hedges that have needed trimming for a while. That's one of four wheelbarrows worth pictured on the way to the compost pile 😅

Plus! Checked in on my fruit bushes and potatoes and they're looking good!

Crab Apples:

Gooseberries:

Redcurrants:

And potatoes!

I'm with you on that! I found out that jumping jacks were hard when I would go with a friend to a dance aerobics class. I finally levelled up into jumping jacks through NF beginner body weight  exercise challenges. 🤩 I'm still wary about them though, and won't jump if my feet or ankles feel fried. 😅

I never jumped rope as a kid. I didn't really have the coordination for it. I've also never really been that active. It stems from being made fun of so much as a kid for not being fast enough or strong enough... I just quit trying.

I've thought about trying a jump rope thing. Maybe if I see one in a gym sometime.

I got a cheap one from the middle aisle in Aldi to try it out and it was totally worth it, I recommend giving it a shot :) I'm not very coordinated myself but just basic jumping has been great.

I hear you on the jump roping. As I kid I'd do it for hours, now I last about a minute.😉

I hear you both! I'm being real careful not to overdo it but they're still taking their toll 😂

I so feel you on the jump rope. As an adult it feels like something so out of touch and out of time.

I want to practice different kinds of jumping as it's good for your lymphatic system / I find it hard so I wanna try and I started watching youtube videos from the jumprope guys as kind of inspiration to get started. I haven't gone much farther than that but it is neat!

Well, I also have osteoarthritis in my knees... so maybe jumping wouldn't be best for me, now that I think about it.
