Ridiculous. I'm glad you're not expelled and it wasn't a terrible battle but that seems so ridiculously..... silly. My head hurts trying to wrap my head around how in the world that is plagiarism at all given what you've shared about the assignment and the outcome...

It is over. The past is done, there is nothing more with which to change it. Only present actions and future hopes remain to pull you through to the end goal. I send a little energy hug for you to use however you need to bounce back 💜

Thank you. Having it over was exactly the sort of finality that I needed. I took the rest of the day and just did nothing much and let my soul rest. It was exactly right.

You’re not wrong. ;)  I don’t know what she decided I had taken from her, but this was never going to be the answer. Pray for her, because she is hurting, friends, and at the end of the semester, she’s still going to be her, and I will barely remember her name (except to have it on a DoNotTouch list).

Agreed. I think there was a lot that was revealed in the brief session, and that it’s incredibly helpful for me going forward. Beyond that, it’s all between her and whatever God she prays to.  That’s a her-problem; I have other, actual issues to address.

On the matter of the Literature Review, which is to come from the annotated bibliography, I’m of course being more methodical and precise than ever. The upshot is that I chose this topic because it’s the area of the dissertation that is both the most interesting to me and the one that needs exactly this sort of literature landscape analysis, so being extra thorough is actually pretty interesting to me, and I keep getting into that lovely flow state with the research. I currently have 750 ish words of the analysis written around five of the six big references that are propelling the landscape. The assignment requires 15-20 resources, and while peer review isn’t specified, I’m taking that part as a given. The final length should be 2000-2500 words (8-10 pages), so the thing to do is use the resources and write it as I have it, now, and then go back and see what the gaps are for the number of sources and length. All will be well. It’s technically due next Sunday, but we have a built-in 7-day extension and I will see where I am on Wednesday evening; since I have the MRI on Thursday, I don’t expect to be worth much Thursday or Friday, and then Vivian day-visits next weekend.  If I need more time, I’ll take it.

What’s weird about this assignment is that then, a week after the literature analysis is due, our research questions are due. I don’t really understand how we can do lit review without knowing the questions, but that’s all to the good. It means I’m actually doing both assignments (though of course I’ll triple check the format and presentation and rubric and suchlike to assure myself any anyone else that I’m delivering what’s expected in the way it is expected).

In other news, Vivian and I had a ball this weekend. It rained all day Saturday and we stayed in, playing with toys and reading and talking about what all had happened on our various excursions since we’d seen each other last. She loved the classic Pooh Bear & Piglet stuffies from the NYPL, and is very much looking forward to reading the two books that are mysteries set in the library itself. We talked about fashion: she loves the way her body is put together but kind of hates the way off-the-rack clothes are, and she has definite ideas of how she wants to look and what sorts of clothes would achieve that. I told her that she’s got a great sense of style (she does) and that Roanoke has never had anything much worth wearing, and that we could absolutely get her some of what she’s after.

We have a long tradition of Playmobil (and sometimes a Lego in addition) advent calendars, and I always buy them at the end of September or October to make sure I get them before they sell out. A few years ago, given how infrequently we see each other, we started opening the panes around Halloween during her visits. This year there were so many beautiful wonderful advent calendars to choose from that I was shocked and nearly stymied; usually there’s one, maybe two. I paused a beat and then bought many (See: Strength) and they all arrived just before I left for New York: Six Playmobil and two Lego, and she gets to open to windows each day of her visits. I told her if it looked like we were going to see each other more than that, we’d drop back to one pane from each calendar every day. One of them has real person-sized cookie cutters with a face stamp for decorating the cookies as well as a chef figure and a chef’s table. It’s all delightful.

The head cold portion of being sick was nearly kicking my butt, so I started taking some homeopathic cold & flu syrup, and that’s helping (Umcka, for the record; the chemicals in traditional medications either don’t work for me or end up giving me wicked migraines for days (or both), and I’m glad there’s this alternative). I can breathe, and my sleep is restful. I’ve even stopped blowing my nose nearly constantly (though I do still sneeze a lot). Here’s hoping all continues to improve.

The rest of the evening is likely going to be me thinking about the discussion post for Public Libraries class that I still haven’t gotten around to and eating good food and resting. Lost of resting.

May you have peace this day, Friends.

The Great Reading Thread of 2024

“I've always believed that failure is non-existent. What is failure? You go to the end of the season, then you lose the Super Bowl. Is that failing? To most people, maybe. But when you're picking apart why you failed, and now you're learning from that, then is that really failing? I don't think so." - Kobe Bryant, 1978-2020. Rest in peace, great warrior.

You know what you call a (medical) doctor that made Cs and Ds?

.…

.…

..

“Doctor.”

Anyway, I cannot believe it’s the end of the challenge.

I lived.

The fortitude was needed in completely different ways than I had imagined, and yet it was absolutely needed,

Challenge Wrap up

A Fortitude Saving Throw measures your ability to stand up to physical punishment or attacks against your vitality and health. Apply your Constitution modifier to your Fortitude saving throws. So, Let’s talk about the Constitution score, which is pretty low, as heroes go, and isn’t going to be getting higher any time soon.

  1. Intelligence: I did okay with this until the travels, and then this became difficult and fiddly. Even so, everything (mostly) got done. +2

    1. Open Canvas daily

      1. Read 60 minutes a day

      2. Write daily for class

    2. Finalize & Present at the Conference: Knocked it out of the park, and the travels didn’t kill me!

  2. Strength: +1, because all the basics were met. Nothing special or bonus, just doing the things.

    1. Go to work

  3. Wisdom: +1 for making the debt payments; +1 for lowering overall credit card debt to <25% before the NY trip. Next challenge will be about taking stock of the wreckage and making a plan for that.

    1. Loosening the hold of debt: Credit card balances <25%;

    2. savings increased. (This is going to be difficult with the NY trip, but I’m keeping financial health on my radar.)

  4. Constitution: The interim acupuncturist is not so great, and this is good to know. Good eating happened even while traveling. +1

    1. Eating good food every day

    2. Healing: Acupuncture; therapy; daily medications

  5. Charisma+2, because the NY trip really knocked this out of the park and will have long-lasting effects.

    1. Sleep

    2. Bonus: sauna, steps, sociability — this was all excellent, and the Broadway and NYPL glow is still with me.

  6. Dexterity+2, where I was only expecting a +1, largely because the Trial that I thought was coming hasn’t and a surprise Trial has blown up in its place, and all of this took a heroic amount of dexterity to navigate without dropping all the other many things that are always going on.

    1. Stay nimble and hold emotions loosely (especially at work:without getting caught up in the chaos)

    2. stay brave.

  7. Stamina I’m making it work. I’m not sure if I will ever actually increase stamina; i’m here to see if I can maintain what I have. I am very impressed indeed with how I managed the constant pace of the NY trip. This is not something I would have thought possible, and I’m kind of glad I didn’t understand how much physicality would be involved, or I wouldn’t have said yes. +1

    1. Sleep, food, rest

Closing Stats

Con 8 +1=9

Str 7 +1=8

Int  10 +2=12

Dex 10 +2=12

Wis 10 +1=11

Cha 9 +2=11

Sta 3 +1=4
