Both quotes, way too relatable.

Hugs, friend.

Hugs back that you find this so relatable, and that so many of us do, in varying degrees.

Sending solidarity.

❤️

Today is a ridiculous day, filled with ridiculousness at work (that is not mine to deal with). More people are leaving, from different teams across the organization, and SittingInFireWithCoffeeThisIsFine.gif.

I am stone-cold GenX enough that apathy is actually helpful. Ok, Universe.

None of these problems are mine to solve, and my opnion on the matter is perfectly irrelevant.

Speaking of Quiet Quitting, which we weren't but hear me out: When did doing your job and not interfering in other people's work become the definition of being a slacker?

So at this point, my team consists of two internal contractors and two external contractors. There's not much communication coming to this corner, and this afternoon one of my teammates said "is everything quietly crumbling?" and another one said "but it's quiet, so don't bother it." and I can't think of a  better way to describe where we all are.

Lots of sailing metaphors going on in my head today.

"We can't control the direction of the wind, but we can adjust our sails."

"Smooth seas never made for a skilled sailor."

And, not in quite the same vein, but related:

"A ship in port is safe; but that's not what a ship is for."

Not certain where all that is coming from or where it's heading but here, have a picture as thunder rumbles in the distance, making us glad of hot tea, warm soup, and thick glass in our windows and the safety of our homes. Making us glad of the friends we met along the Way.

I finished the CITI IRB Certification, huzzah! (Truly, it made me seasick and worry that I was drooling, but whatever, these are good standards and practices)

The only thing left of homework is a weird data analysis that is bizarrely specific while still somehow managing to be stupefyingly vague. While I’m tempted to drop this course due to the blistering pedantry of the professor, it’s on public libraries, and he’s the only one who teaches it, and really, it’s the discussion posts that are problematic, not the assignments themselves. If anyone knows of a good transcription app, please drop the link. He does these horrible 30-45 minute videos on mandatory style considerations and suchlike (the last lecture included ten minutes on why this is a good assignment, pedagogically, without actually getting to what the assignment entails. *shudder* like, brother, i don’t care, just tell me what to turn in). The style considerations are things like “use section headings” and his manner is down putting. “Seriously, if you’re doing a paper of more than three pages, you need subject heading as a way for your reader to make sense of what you’re saying.” Yeah, I bet I don’t. My Internet forum would tend to disagree, and I dare say they are worlds more familiar with my work than any professor will ever be, but okay, brother, you go on with your Very Important Self.

Anyway, my point (and I do have one) is that it would be super handy to have these written in a document so that I could refer to them while writing said paper(s) (singular, really, I think there might be two papers over three pages, but whatever, there are only three freaking assignments for the whole class). In fact I dropped into his virtual office hours discussion (visible to the whole class, and something he admonished us strongly suggested  we use for any questions we have instead of “clogging up his email.” We are also to read through all the questions and replies in case our question has already been answered. I dropped into this space and asked if he had a transcript of the slide presentation (it’s not actually a video, it’s kind of a PowerPoint with narration on YouTube, and your know, I played it at 1.5 speed and it still dragged. Any faster and the words lost identifiability. The bonus is that the slides do not, in fact, have a written item of instruction, but rather are examples of the instruction in use. The slides during the discussion of “use section headings” is a detailed look at an article (his) and scrolls through it. Having sound on is obviously required to know what’s going on beyond just “Hey, there’s this article that is many pages long, focusing on the professor’s name more than once, in fact many many times.” In fact, the discussion goes on at length about how this is a good article and easy to understand and very publication-worthy. Hey, guess what? I’m GenX; I don’t care. Congratulations and stuff, I just want the checklist. Anyway, I asked him for the transcript to make sure I kept all the style details in focus while writing (I failed to mention this was a habit i developed while doing an MFA in Creative Nonfiction; perhaps that was an error on my part) and he wrote back a couple days later saying he would see what he could do to get this to us, since it’s probably handy and he hadn’t thought about that.

Friends.

THAT WAS AUGUST 23, more than a fortnight ago.

Okay, Universe. Sitting and transcribing from video it is.

I wish I was half as smart as that professor thinks he is.

We should all be so lucky.

Dude is quite obviously what happens when a programmer personality becomes an English major and turns to Library Science as a profession, but as a professor and not a librarian because that wouldn’t entail getting to tell people what to do and how smart he is (because, you know, how would we know if he wasn’t telling us all the time?)

I stopped being an infant about the whole thing and listened to the lecture and took notes, and wow, yes, he’s a pain and no, I still don’t care.

My house is clean and my homework is nearly done.

I have one discussion post (for The Pedant) left this week, and I have the data all collected so that I can write that up tomorrow. At the last minute he decided to make this particular discussion “unskippable” after making a big to-do about giving us the latitude to choose whichever ten discussions we wanted. Yes, I’m still being an infant because yes, I had planned on skipping this post because yes, it’s a stupid amount of clerical work for a discussion. No matter. There is no fight and I have no enemies. It will absolutely get done and that’s one more post that I’ve got credit for and it’s a level of number crunching that I need to do anyway for the paper that’s due in a few weeks (with section headings).

My Library advisor has said we should meet and talk about setting up an independent study to look at the history of (de)professionalism of librarians and if/how it parallels deprofessionalism of teachers. It will involve, she tells me, a syllabus of my creation and a lot of reading and then a long paper at the end. This seems ideal, except that i have no clue what to include on the syllabus, but I have a whole campus of librarians at my disposal, so I think I will be okay.

Today is a good day, and it was kind of fun to get to indulge my inner infant.

Thanks for listening.

If you have to point out and tell people how smart you are, well you probably aren't. Same goes for being kind, compassionate and various other traits.

He totally is, BUT I unleashed my comedy rant about him on the student-only discord thread, and it was somehow unifying. Not just current students, but students who had him before started swooping in with YASS KWEEN and, what's even better, they started dropping links to tools for his assignments that they didn't find until after many hours of frustration or whatnot dealing with his micromanagement approach. This was beautiful to behold. Leave it to librarians to provide tools! Also one of the current students was having a full-on anxiety attack about her writing after watching the Special Lecture On Writing, and I offered to take a look at any of her drafts just to set her mind to ease. This is the Way.

Today is weird, becuase last night was weird. I did that whole sleep for fifteen inutes then wake up and stay up for another hour thing until way too late/early.

This morning was also weird, involving missed communications and the like, but all will sort itself out. Tea, as always, was the answer.

Work is work and I'm taking some time today to do some virtual catching up with folks and to work on the library assignment and hopefully turn it in. Folks, let me remind you that this is a discussion post. It is literally worth less than one percent of my grade. But make no mistake, The Pedant is combing over every pixel of our responses to see if we handled the spreadsheet in the way that he expects. Um, okay then.

Really all I want to do is knit and maybe read, which I will absolutely be doing this evening after I turn in the post.

I never truly understood this until I watched the movie "True Spirit".  For me I always feel like my sense is heightened to feel the ripples of change... realizing just allowing them to be and worry about my response is so strange and foreign. But oh so healthier.

Today was a really good day.

Just before lunch, I found the right angle to tackle the data analysis for the Pedantic Post (it’s a lot of data that needed sorting and contextualizing — see below).  This felt great. My house is clean and my homework is done.

After posting, I quietly left work for the rest of the day and joined an afternoon of Zoom (or Discord) sessions that filled my heart and restored my soul. Seeing @Sovalis was overdue (and also now means that I am convinced it’s Monday for the rest of the day; sorry I don’t make the rules) and as delightful as ever. Catching up with @DarK_RaideR — and cats!!!— was fabulous. Other good connections as well, including my beloved mostly-monthly Jedi Council. Life is good. This is the Way.

Video calls take a cumulative toll on my neurology, and I was a little concerned that I had five hours scheduled for zoomification, and I rested my eyes and took breaks between them, and this seems to have helped. I can still tell that I did all that, but I’m settling down and returning to center.

I am resting now, and will continue to for the remainder of the evening. There will possibly be knitting, or reading a bit more of Edward Sawtelle or watching a bit of Annika (Nicola Walker is so brilliant, and the references to plays and gods and myths and novels is just exactly my speed).

Life is good.

❤️

Library Data Analysis

Roanoke City Public Libraries is a City library with one main branch and 8 branch locations serving 100,033 people in the city of Roanoke, Virginia. The City Library spends just under $48 per resident per year. Total circulation of physical materials has seen a dramatic uptick in recent years, and the graph is steep enough that I wonder if this reflects a change in data collection trends, or is a result of the very active public outreach campaign of the Roanoke Valley Library consortium. Like most libraries, circulations statistics fell during 2020. Roanoke City Libraries has seen total physical material circulation in 2021 surpass pre-pandemic levels, highlighting the consistent and growing vitality of the RCPL system. Total circulation of 723,360 items in 2021 represents 0.7 items circulated per person that year. The collection holds 290,812 physical items, and RCPL provided 29,676 items to other libraries through interlibray loan in 2021.

Total in-person visits in 2021 was 87,656, representing nearly a visit for every resident. Program attendance was also robust; of the 71,224 attendees in 2021, 90 percent were attendees to children's programs, in line with the distribution of programs offered. The operating expenses of the 4.7 million dollar budget goes predominantly to staff expenses (59%) with only 7% being spent on collection development.

RoanokeCityLibraryCirculationTrends-PerPerson2009-2021.png

The Roanoke City Library system is the only city library system in the Roanoke Valley Library Consortium, which is composed of four library systems in the Roanoke Valley. The consortium serves a total of 252,697 residents through a unified library card, unified online portal, and unified drop-off for library materials. RVL has only one bookmobile, operated by the library system that is the most remote.

Zero Week Reflection:

  • Intelligence -- Yep

    • Open Canvas daily:  the structure for the discussion posts for this is a bit chaotic. I think I finally have found my way through the noise and have my feet under me.

    • Bonus: DuoLingo, Japanese

    • Finalize Conference Presentation -- I’m taking a whackadoodle approach to this conference presentation. Everything I write is a discussion; even though it’s resting on a thick bedrock of data and research, I can’t seem to get away from just talking about it like it matters, like it’s interesting, like we all care about these things, like it’s a story. At first, I thought this was a problem but I was just rolling with it and now, in clear proof that I’ve lost my mind, I think it’s a success. The presentation is in three weeks.

  • Strength -- Yep, though with Monday being a holiday and taking a half day on Friday, it was curiously difficult. This resonates with @Dark_Raider’s recent reflection that with everything being so toxic, we take it as a given. Yes, going to work is hard

  • Wisdom: Yes, though savings is diminished as I take on payments for an upcoming Nice Thing

  • Constitution -- the food I ate this week is really good, but I am still not able to eat much at once and my appetite in general is still non-committal at best. Acupuncture happened; I miss MY acupuncturist

  • Charisma -- sleep is just all wrong right now and has been for a couple weeks. I’m not suffering from lack of sleep during the day, so it’s all good for now, but I’d like to be in a better space. No sauna this week, not much in the way of steps; lots of sociability

  • Dexterity -- this is going particularly well

  • Stamina-- I wear out pretty quickly, but I am able to recover when I allow myself to rest. Going slowly is the Way, and I need to center into that.

This weekend with Vivian was lovely. She was out of school with a sore throat on Friday, and we had a ton of storms and rain over the weekend, which made for a perfect mix to stay in and game, read, play cards, and watch movies. We watched Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which we had wanted to see in the theatre but it didn't work out, and we really enjoyed it. There was also lots of conversation about the apartment, in general, and how we make it our space, and this was fun, actually.

Again last night I wasn't able to settle into sleep until late, but once I did I slept well. Again this means that I slept well beyond sauna and walking time. While it's suboptimal, it's where I am, and pushing myself will only result in breaking, the opposite of what I need from walking and the sauna. All will be well.

Going to work this morning was, again, hard. How ridiculous is that? Nothing explicitly awful is going on, I'm just tired of the circus, which is pretty reasonable for the timeframe. This usually is part of the last phase of acclimation to the new-to-me work environment, so I'm not overly worried about it, but I'm keeping it on my radar in case it tips from a very GenX MEH into a more concerning realm of burnout.

I'm a little concerned about the financial side of things, thought not worryingly so. I've said yes to a number of things that carry a big price tag (tuition, trips, furniture, etc.) that I view as important investiments in who I am and in owning my particular spot in the world. All of this is good, and it's also coming at the same time, and it's doable but scary.  Small steps for the win on this front.

This week I'm looking at Library advocacy, and this dovetails quite a bit with what I'm saying at the upcoming conference. This is not an accident, as I chose the classes this term to weave into the concerns of the presentation and the PhD, and this feels Right and Good. Yes, I am tired, and yes, I am overscheduled, and yes, I am disabled. Knwing that means that I can advocate for my own best practices, which is starting to feel like a superpower.

Speaking of superpowers, the ALA continues to be a gold mine. I'm basing a lot of what I am saying this week on sources collected in the ALA PowerGuide:

“I've always believed that failure is non-existent. What is failure? You go to the end of the season, then you lose the Super Bowl. Is that failing? To most people, maybe. You don't have to be perfect, you just have to be better than you were before. Do that every day and you will succeed.

We're friends on DuoLingo, actually. :)

NeighborDog stopped barking around 11, but I didn't get back to sleep again until after 1, then slept through gym time with Kat & Mikayla, and woke up just in time to log in. I'm not a fan of this and it's becoming routine. I think the neighbor must work at the hospital or something, given the timing. Not to say that this is okay. This is very much not okay.

I'm tired and dragging and moving slowly.

There is tea.

I have no idea what homework I'm supposed to be doing, and would like to get a post to at least one if not all three of my classes today. We'll see how that goes.

Work is curiously calm, and I'm sure I should be concerned about that, but I'll take it.

May you have peace this day, Friends.

I met with Philosopher James over lunch, and it was good.

If there is a quick path to resolution of the PhD, then all good but if not, I think I'm going to slow things down a bit. I'm getting overwhelmed and lost in the pace.

I've dropped a note to my advisor so we can have this conversation.

I'm also considering slowing down the pace on upcoming travel trips, even though I am looking forward to them; I don't think I'll have the documents I need all sorted out in time for travel this summer, which is sad, but can't be helped, and also gives me a little more bandwidth and breathing room. This is Wisdom, which is sometimes less comfortable a comfort.

May your day be smooth and may the path reveal itself.
