I am a wee bit jealous, this is on my list of places to visit....someday

I hope you feel better soon

I've been twice, but both times before were hit-and-run sorts of visits.

This time I'm taking it a little more slowly. I'm planning on visitng the NYPublic Library for the first time ever (if you can believe that), and since my train doesn't leave until Sunday, I'm going to Broadway on Saturday. I doubt I'll have the opportunity to take in a museum, and of course there are a million other things I want to do as well.

We should plan a Nerd MeetUp in the City!

Hi, Friends.

I feel a little better today than in the past two days, probably becuase I slept so well last night. Fitbit says from 8:30-6:30, and wow, I really needed it.

With the discussion quaetion opened for next week's class, I was able to post to the board and not have to take a skip, which I very much like. Of course, this is just another way of me putting off doing the paper that is due Wednesday, so I went and did some cursory analysis and then got bored and did some reorganizing of my comments for the presentation. Ultimately the situation with the paper is that whatever work I'm doing this week will make my life much easier on Saturday and Sunday when I will go into Paper Delivery Mode. I'd much rather only have to spend a couple hours instead of two days, but we'll see how far I get this week.

I'm planning on putting the other discussion questions (3) into a document (on Sunday when they open up) so I can work on them or at least think about them on Monday while I'm on the train. I will probably be able to post a reply to all of them that evening or Tuesday afternoon.

Having lived in New York for 4 years only an hour or so train ride from the city (and having visited the city as often as they'd let us leave... lovely military academies...), I've never been either. I've been and seen many things, but not the library. Nor a few museums that were conveniently booked up or closed during the visits I had the ability to take the time. Granted, I was attending West Point at the time and I absolutely wanted nothing to do with anything academic during the limited times I was allowed free for a weekend. As nerdy as I am, doing nothing but school/military related things 21-23 hours of the day multiple days a week and surviving on a weekly average of 4 hours sleep a night does make you a little bitter about such things.

I shall live vicariously through you on these adventures!

Oh my goodness a lot has happened since I have been away. I am so sorry that you are feeling poorly and so glad that it's not so bad that you have to cancel the New York trip. I am also glad that your time with Philosopher James was useful and rejuvenating. I am grateful that you have someone in a mentorship position, that is such a good thing. FYI, I am 100% down to plan a NYMeetUp. Currently my availability looks like: January, March, April, maybe June,  almost certainly July.

I'd love to find some place reasonable to stay -- if anyone knows of someone renting out a house for a week in the City or Brooklyn, give a holler.

I'm very glad that I'm feeling better and get to go, too. :)

Thank you for your good wishes -- it was a rough patch and I'm still not up to 100%, but all will be well enough.

Work was an total circus all morning, with the Contentious coworker just running roughshod over everything and making a 15 minute morning meeting last hours. We finally decided to "take a quick break," and god love my coworkers, several of them had "something come up" during the break and the remainder of the call has been postponed. Thank you Universe.

I've not made a bit of progress on the State Library Analysis, and I likely won't until maybe five this evening. Fridays have a lot of paperwork and housekeeping, literal as well as figurative.

On the upside, my house is clean.

Tonight is another home football game, so I'll be doing homework until 6:30 and then taking an uber to the high school across town. Whatever doesn't get done before the game will have to wait until tomorrow, since after the game I'm usually in desperate need of a warm bath, a cup of tea, and just staring at the ceiling for several hours. I have a stadium chair that I'm taking, so that should help with the day-after aches and pains.

I also found a job that I would love to have, that's remote, that feels important and worthwhile, and has reasonable travel requirements that I can foreseeably meet:
https://policylink.bamboohr.com/careers/93. I'm going to craft a cover letter and research resume after I get back from NY, even though I don't really think I have a chance of getting it. These are the sorts of things that I think of when someone asks me what I'm going to do with a PhD. I need to start wrapping my head around how to apply.

I'm glad that I'm not nearly as tired as I have been in recent days. I think whatever blockage is happening has shifted a bit, probably as a result of warm baths and yoga, lots of fluids and good sleep. These are always magic.

May you have peace this day.

❤️

Excellent!

I am 100% depleted from going to the game last night, but not suffering. This is good. This is the Way.

I was feeling a little dismayed by how useless I am mentally, knowing that I still have the State Library Analysis yet to do, and then I got a text message from Vivian asking if I’ll be at the band competition today. Friends, it’s from 2-9pm. That’s a big ask, but of course I said I could do that.

I’m relaxing with tea until time to leave.

This is the Way.

It was a wonderful event.

My phone, my watch, and myself are all in single digits, but I'm content.

A bath and a ling sleep are in order.

When I was in the ninth grade, pi kept me up at night.

Then, one spring afternoon, I asked my Algebra 2 teacher if you could have imaginary pi.

I nearly had to be admitted.

Thank you, Alan Becker, for illustrating how problematic this was, and the beautiful path to acceptance.

I have arrived in New York and made it to the hotel.

I had a lovely bath and was a bit surprised to find that the kitchen that was specified does not in fact have a stove or a microwave, but it does have a sink.

Also it has no plates or cups or utensils of any kind, but I made tea with the tea kit that I brought and am using one of the little bathroom cups,

I am very tired, and I have no idea when in the world the state library analysis will get done, but that is clearly tomorrow’s problem.

It’s time for a good long rest.

Welcome to New York — I just ordered a grass-fed burger and organic hand cut fries and they were here before I the kettle boiled for tea.

It was fresh and made to order and amazing.

I could have taken the subway from the train station, but I was too wiped out to follow directions, so I hailed a cab. On the way from the City to Brooklyn, the cabbie asked me a bunch of questions about philosophy, and we had great conversation. He thanked me for talking with him.

After I unpacked, I walked the neighborhood a bit — the hotel is in an Orthodox area and it was right around 5, and all the families were out and about. I passed Buildings and whole buses have writing in a language I recognize and would like to learn.

And everywhere, even in the good natured walk of parents or siblings with strollers, there was a sense of purpose, of going from this point to somewhere-over-there, just out of sight, with a reason,  and this is the polar opposite of Roanoke. I kind of love it. Also, no one at the market or any of the stores I passed — their doors open, cashiers sitting practically on the sidewalk — asked if they could help me. Unless I spoke to them, they didn’t even meet my eye — they had things they were doing, things they were doing with purpose. Mind you, they never acted rude or as though I had interrupted them, and the market had hand-lettered signs in at least eight languages saying “If you’d like help, please ask.”

There is something about the energy here that feels wonderful.

How can I be in a city of 8.5 million people I have never met and feel as though I’m in my element? And yet I do.

I’m not planning on rushing off to move to The Big City like some ingénue in the latest Wrong-Genre-Savvy, Too-Good-for-this-Sinful-Earth film. (I mean, I’m more Gamine, local girl makes good int he big city trope, specifically as a river or bookshop owner, but even so, this would require a distant relative or aged elderly person —secretly wealthy and likely also a winner of a Pulitzer — to choose me as a Bookshop Companion or some such, and that’s so blistering unlikely we might as well take on squaring the circle).  I mean, heck, I’m not even interested in moving from my tiny Loft apartment, though in the next year or three Vivian and I will definitely be wanting our own rooms.

Anyway, it’s nice to be here, even though I’m completely worn out.

FitBit says I’ve walked over 7500 steps today, and over 8500 on Saturday, and over 6000 on Friday. For a lady who had been averaging 2500 steps in the last few weeks, this is a lot.

Tomorrow I want to go to the New York Public Library, but I really must do the State Library Analysis first, or at least get the draft in much better shape.

If needed, I can wait until Saturday before lunch, since I’m scheduled for the Broadway matinee and will be in the City anyway.

All will be well.

I slept really well last night and woke up a little stiff and sore, but that shook out while I made tea.

And had nothing to drink it in.

I put on my shoes and walked down to a nearby bodega, where amongst a vast supply of groceries I barely recognized, let alone knew how they would be used, I found a pack of 10 "hot cups," blessedly styrofoam free 16 ounce beauties with lids. I couldn't find any sugar of any variety -- I'm sure it was there somewhere, but after touring the four mile-high aisles a third time, I gave up. I grabed a pack of plasitc spoons and checked out. I used one cup for the tea that had brewed while I was out, another to hold the remaining water from my travel water filter, and another as a tea leaves container. I sipped tea and logged in to work on the Library Analysis paper.

That was two hours ago, and I have over 1000 words of the 1500 words needed for a case study analysis for Ethics class.

I have exactly 0 additional words( or even any additional thoughts) of the 2500 words needed for the State Library Analysis paper, and friends, I'm having trouble here. I'm goign to make another cup of tea, stretch my legs a bit, and then see if I can come back and Do The Thing.

Wish me luck.

I wrote some more, this time a really solid 3000 words for the presentation. Still nothing on State Library Analysis. I'm going to take a break and do a dry run to the college and back via public transit to see if I can make this work. I'll probably pick up some food while I'm out. State library analysis when I get back.

I did it!

I caught the bus and rode to the college student center and wow, did you know you can't get on campus unless you're faculty or a student? Anyway, after showing the guard my ID and the conference schedule, they let me in to walk around and see where I'll be presenting.

I did that, then caught a bus back. I'm pretty certain that by the time I got to my stop that there were more people on that bus than in my undergraduate graduating class. I walked back to the hotel and ordered some food. It should be here in another 20 minutes or so, which is just the right amount of time to take my shoes off and settle in with the requirements of the State Library Analysis paper.

How goes the analysis paper?

Not going to sugar coat it, I was struggling.

I opened the draft that I had and it was total bunk.

The only reasonable approach was to scrap the whole thing, open a clean blank document, and start from scratch. This was good and right, and as of right now, I have sfour very good pages. This is heartening. There's a lot of data to swim through, and overall the project itself is basically a graduate version of a book report, and I'm very much not interested in it, which is what is taking so long.

The good news is that this approach is working, even if it is slow and tedious.

It's not due until midnight tomorrow, so as long as I get a decent framework on the page for each of the sections (with section headings!!!!) I will be fine. It's difficult to find my footing when really what I want to do is just make a chart, btu that's not what this assignment is about. This assignment is about being able to take a spreadsheet and make a presentation out of it showing how the state library supports libraries in the Commonwealth, and then placing that in context with other libraries in the nation, showing what is exemplary and could be a worthy model for other state libraries to adopt, either as a program or as an approach, and also to identify any gaps where this library is not meeting its peers, and this is important too, since advocacy requires identifying where we can do better.

Health Update: I'm betting that the health discomfort from last week is/was a kidney stone. I've had discomfort come and then go today, along with a some all-too-recognizable UTI type symptoms. If it's a UTI, the symptoms start and then rapidly worsen, and this has not been the case today, so after my earlier post I walked down to the pharmacy and picked up a pack of UTI test strips and some medication, and also picked up a pack of ban aids since there's a small irritation where my sandals rub and I'd prefer it not trurn into a blister in the middle of the conference.

The tet strip shows I have Leukocytes in my urine, but not nitrites, the only combination of results that does not have a "contact your doctor immediately" designation. I took the medication, since if I don't need it, it won't hurt anything, and I packed a couple doses into my bag to make sure I have them with me tomorrow.

Speaking of bags, this little itty bitty bag that I bought last year is just right. It's a sling bag style that is not much bigger than my phne and has two pockets, one for the phone (that has a plastic case cover type material so that you can use the phone without taking it out of the bag) and a second one that's just big enough for sunglasses, or, in the way I'm using it now, a card case, a coin purse, a pill box, and a cigarette case. I like it, but then today I fell head over heels for it when I realized that my 4x6 notecards can slip into the sleeve behind the phone on the phone side, meaning I can carry my presentation without having to find another bag. I slipped a pen in too, because pens are important, and I'll drop in some buisiness cards next to the coin purse in the morning before I head out.

I estimate that the paper really needs another hour on each section, but it's probably not going to get all of that. I'm going to go for another walk and then come back and type more until I'm tired enough to sleep. My bus leaves for campus at 8, and then I'll probably be back around 7. Turning it in late is an automatic 10% deduction per day, so there's no value in improvements after 11 p.m. tomorrow.

I definitely think the medicine and the food are helping, and that I wasn't aware of how depleted I was. I'm still thinking good thoughts, and I'm not worn out, so perhaps I can get a little bit of goodness in each section before I take a bath and call it a night.

Okay, it's official, i'm tired enough to go to sleep ( I think).

I have 17 pages and still need to write the sections about comparison to Kentuky and the section about the regional consortium. The paper's only supposed to be 8-10 pages long, and he hates it when people go over, and at this rate it's goin to come in at twice as long as specified. Can I help it that Virginia libraries are fascinating?

No matter. I'll do the two sections tomorrow and see what the final page length is, and turn it in. I just don't have enough time or extra brainpower to make it shorter right now.

First day at the conference was amazing; I've walked 10,000+ steps, taken the train, and had pizza dinner with some of the philosophers after the conference ended. I took the subway back to my hotel (all by myself!!) and I'm very content as I start the last pieces of work on the paper. It's still too long, but the professor said he'd live with that and give recommendations on where cuts could be made that would still keep the analysis intact wihtout losing the data.

T minus 100 until I turn it in for good or for ill.

More soon. :)

Thank you, you are 100% right -- I just finished checking the references etc and puttin ghte final polish on it and boom it's done and submitted, another project completed.

I am very content. The chips will fall as they may.

I have nothing weighing me down or worrying my soul.

Also, there is something wonky with my telegram app, the way I usually communicate with Vivian, and she was a dear and called me directly from her phone. We talked about me being out of town this weekend, and how her dad and I still needed to finalize the arrangements for swapping weekends, and she asked what I wanted to do the next time we see each other. I asked if she still wanted to go to Layman farm and she responded with a big yes, and I said that her dad and I would finalize the details. I say this easily, as though it's an obvious truth. There is no fight; I have no enemies. She's also looking forward to games and gaming and playing together as well as maybe going downtown.

In the subway station to take the train home, there were some dudes who clearly had marching band background, belting out a snapping rendition of Flowers, not my favorite song, but they were absolutely rocking the whole house. I had a few mninutes before the train came, so I took a video and sent it to Vivian, who will love it.

I ache physically, and somehow feel sunburned despite having spent almost all day insided.

It's time for some sleep before I get up and do it all again tomorrow.

❤️
