Ranger Hal Starts Up Again

Recommended Posts

I’m Ranger Hal. I hike, snowshoe, scramble, climb, and do search and rescue. I was doing pretty good about getting out regularly until the beginning of August. Then for various reasons, I just sort of stopped. So I need to get started again. So here's the plan.

1. Walk

2. Put away outdoor gear (unless it's drying out)

3. Wash dishes

4. Leave for work by 9am

For anyone that was following the backpack project, I did finally buy the pattern. I have started ordering some of the materials. So the plan is to continue obtaining materials and get some cheap fabric to do a mock-up to make sure I'm happy with it before I use the expensive outdoor fabrics.

Well, I'm going to try. We'll see how it turns out :). This is likely to be a long project as I'm not moving very quickly on it right now.

Yeah, I do this, too, put off cleaning things that I know will be a hassle. For me it's Tupperware/plastic bowls. I set them aside for last because a lot of times they need to soak anyway because they've been in the fridge or they've been used in the microwave so the food is sticking to the sides or the rim, and they take longer to wash every surface.

I also really, really dislike washing silverware. There are seven people in my home (5 kids, 2 adults), so we use a lot of silverware. I feel like I'm washing it forever. So, since I hate it so much I do it first.

I even have a pretty good system that involves shaking hot water and soap to get rid of most of the peanut butter you can't get out with a knife, but even so, I really dislike it.

I could see how seven people produce a lot of dirty silverware. In my house, silverware is limited by the fact that I'm still using the 3-4 sets of thrift store silverware I bought when I went off to college. (It also forces me to wash silverware fairly regularly because otherwise I'll run out.)

I spent all of 2020, 2021, and most of 2022 with only one set of silverware, 1 bowl and 1 plate, 1 mug, 1 sharp knife, and one cooking pan. It was wonderful.

:)

Great goals -- I like the simplicity.

I put CR on on my phone and listen to it while I do the dishes sometimes. Makes the chore less onerous!

I generally try to watch it on a bigger screen. I love seeing their reactions, especially when they're all laughing their heads off or when Matt's eyes get big because they did something he totally wasn't expecting!
