[Kalitraz] Changeing Seasons, Consistent Progress

Recommended Posts

As seasons change here in MT, we go from the adventures of Summer to a much more indoor winter. I want to continue to stay moving as the weather cools. I've got the gear to do it, I just need to keep my momentum. I honestly really like the cold weather. It's a big part of why I live in Montana, but it can be harsh at times. Ice fishing probably wont have started until after this challenge, but hunting season starts Saturday so I hope to climb a few mountains chasing some fresh venison and fall is also the best season for chasing real monster fish as they fatten up on big meals (big streamer flies and big lures) for winter. Basically really leaning into the ranger this challenge. Might even try for a cold-weather camping outing.

I liked my last challenge, but did not do quite as well as I would have liked. I'm keeping most of the challenges, just tweaking values a bit. Also adding a scoring system to actually have defined numbers for how well things go not just gut feeling. I'm still tweaking things a bit, but wanted to go ahead and get things listed here and a post started for the new challenge.  With points coming to 945, thinking of trying to find some bonus points to round it out to an even 1,000. Still thinking of a few different ways to maybe do the scorning. May actually drop journaling and/or curfew as their own items and instead  have them as part of the 10 routines.

Bookend routines I want to continue working on:
(If the task is already complete for the day, i.e. no dishes to put away, I'm still gonna count is as complete for staying on top of it)

Morning Routines Evening Routines
Make Bed
Dental Hygiene/Medicine
Dishes Put Away
Dog Fed and Watered
Professional Dress (Inspite of WfH)
Laundry & Folding
15min Housekeeping
Check-ins With My Wife
Journaling/Meditation
Dental Hygiene/Medicine

Here is the link to the master spreadsheet where I'll be tracking things. By the official start of the challenge I will be sure that the table below and the master match.

Start: 10/22 End: 11/25 Bad Poor Ok Good Excellent Frequency Notes
Intermittent Fasting: Feast Window > 12 hours ≤ 12 hours ≤ 10 hours ≤ 8 hours ≤ 6 hours Daily Usually aim for eating btw 11am-8pm
Calorie intake (food logging) > 2500 cal > 2000 cal ≤ 2000 cal ≤ 1800 cal ≤ 1600 cal Daily Not logging counts as Bad
Daily Bookend Routines < 4 4 5-6 7-8 9-10 Daily out of the 10 daily routine bullets
Standing Desk Not used 0-1 hours 1 hours 2 hours 3+ hours Daily
I have a nice standing desk but haven't used it enough

Curfew ≥ 11.00 pm ≤ 11.00 pm ≤ 10.30 pm ≤ 10.00 pm ≤ 9:30 pm Daily Up at 6:30am Weekdays. N/A for weekends (late nights NA for Wed)
Steps < 4,000 ≥ 4,000 ≥ 6,000 ≥ 7,500 ≥ 9,000 Daily Smartwatch numbers
Workouts/Activity 0 1 2 3 > 3 Weekly Goal: Workout Aprox every other day. VR sessions count for 1/2.
HW: Reading, Research, Papers Not Done Minimum plus 1 day plus 2 days plus 3 days Weekly All HW reading done + days Research/Writing

Best of luck to everyone with your own challenges and thanks for checking in here!

More rangerness!!! Probably won't be until the spring or summer, but my wife is getting me a Montana Master Naturalist class for my upcoming birthday (during this challenge)! I've always wanted to take it. I love natural history and expect this will teach me alot more about the biomes around my home. I used to work at a state park and tagging along with the resident park ranger, learning random nature facts (including a week long canoe trip with just him), was definitely the highlight of the job. I'm not in that field at all anymore, but I dream of it. Maybe as a retiree. Natural history interpretation is the most fulfilled I've ever felt in a job.

Que my every challenge soapbox: The NF Adventurer class should be the jack of all trades and the NF Ranger should be the exploration/woodcraft class. A good adventuring party has many classes, all of them adventurers, but the ranger specializes in mastering the wilderness.

Not gonna lie... at first I thought the pic was from like ... Your challenge seems pretty well-organized. How many of your goals are part of your daily life already and which ones are a stretch for you?

Well most of these were part of last challenge so they aren't completely new. Most of them are part of my day already in some form but I want to push myself to do them better and have accountability to actually track how much I do do them and not just think about it and push it off to tomorrow.

Dental hygiene is not as much a habit as I need it to be. I have a nice standing desk but haven't used it in way too long. I'm luck to make myself do 2 workouts a week, that's a big one I need to improve on. I have a habit of just wearing sweats or PJs to work until I go on a walk at lunch so I want to force myself to wear real clothes more. I focus better when dressed for real, especially with shoes on. I put housework off too and tend to just have to spend a good chunk of weekend on cleaning up. My home growing up wasn't exactly tidy so I want to be better about daily maintenance. Laundry also gets put off too much, or I just leave it in a pile after washing it instead of getting everything folded. I'd say put away too but we've got a real space problem for storing clothes. I want to go through and sort out some clothes to get rid of/store this challenge, but that's not an official goal. I am getting a bunch of furniture next week from my recently passed great grandma so that might help that issue too. I also don't journal or meditate nearly as much as I'd like to. I need to stay on top of research and papers this challenge so that's gonna be a big one to track. I've been pretty good about intermittent fasting but want to restrict my eating window even more and be stricter about it, my only exception is my morning coffee with a splash of cream and a bit of sugar. Gonna work towards black coffee 😝.

No I suppose I should have clarified that. Not me. Just a pic from google image search that fit. Didn't really find any good gifs. My wife has been teaching me archery, but I have a ways to go before trying a bow-hunt, and I've been using a modern compound bow, tho a recurve or longbow is a goal for someday. Rifle hunting again this year. Maybe my wife will trust me with a bow-hunt next year. I've completed bowhunter-education, but need to fire a couple hundred more arrows. Credit where it's due for the chart, it was stolen copied last challenge from @TimovieMan.

This was my hunt in 2019. Vegans, consider yourself warned.

You have so many goals and plans I can barely remember all of them! 😛 Anyhow, that certainly makes the life interesting, you won't get bored.

Wow, a Naturalist Class, that sounds so interesting! Congratulations on this wonderful gift and on the wife who knows you so well :)

Haha, about the laundry... You know what I do? I just hang it out and forget about it for eternity xD

Time for 0 week update. Off to a strong start, aside from the expectedly bad Wednesday calories and late night. I even practically skipped lunch yesterday and then just got a burger combo for dinner and that alone was over 2k calories :P. I've been enjoying my standing desk, easily hitting blue cells. I'd up the values for it, but going from not using it to using it I think is better than trying to go straight to using it all day. I'll plan to update the values for next challenge. There are times where I need to have it down to do some types of work. I'm even on track for blue workout this week. I might change this to workouts/bonus activity and increase all values by 1 to not get thrown off too much by not really having time on Wednesdays (I did get one in yesterday, but was running late back to work because of it), or by rest days. I want to start trying to get some extra activity/movement in every day in addition to a daily walk. Also I've been wanting to use my VR rig more. Got it last winter just before getting Covid and then couldn't really use it much, and then over the summer I had other things I want to do instead generally. Some of my games are pretty demanding too so I feel ok counting them for mini-workouts. Almost always get a good sweat going. Maybe a VR session counts for 1/2 workout/activity. (Edit* I also just remembered I have some wrist/ankle weights I can use to dial up the effort if I need to).

I guess that's what 0 week is for, refining goals.

Oooh, druid specialisation! Will you learn about the wild plants and stuff?

What did you do with the deer? I've bought some before but found it lean and gamey. It's okay in this Hungarian paprika goulash they make around here.

Really liking the Ranger vibes around here! I did some winter camping in college that I look back on very fondly and don't really intend to ever revisit, but I do want to put some more effort into getting day hikes in this winter.

Yes wild plants, animals, habitats, interactions btw them, natural history, conservation issues and I'm sure many things I am not even thinking of. It's either a week long intensive or several weekends across a couple months. Then you have to continue with I think 20 hours of volunteer time and I think an additional 8 hours of continuing education to keep the certification year to year.

I love venison. In a slow pot-roast with root veggies, deer-steaks and biscuits (not like a beef steak, many smaller little steaks, 1-2 bites each), venison and gravy. Hungarian paprika goulash with venison sounds good. Gonna have to try that. It is very lean yes and gamier than domesticated yes, but I kinda like that. It's about the healthiest meat you can eat afaik. I think the whole prejudice against 'gamey' comes mostly from meat companies. Depending on where the deer lives and what it eats it can be more or less gamey. Elk is even better than deer but harder to come by. We don't get elk every year, but a couple deer are nearly guaranteed. Tomorrow is opening day of the season so I'm getting everything ready to be up on top of the family ranch at sunrise tomorrow.

Isn't standing desk very tiring?

Well it's a bit of an effort yes, but then I think of people who's job all day is on their feet, I can manage a couple hours. It being an effort is evidence that it's working, right? The whole 'sitting is the new smoking' conversation is good motivation, but then like today I was running on empty after a couple late nights and lack of sleep and didn't quite make myself use it. Still getting used to it, and so is my dog. She thinks that since I'm standing around with my shoes on it's about to be time for a walk or I'm about to leave her behind. She's very anxious about it lol.

My prejudice comes from the fact that I don't like any meat I didn't grow up eating. Just picky I guess. You can get wild boar and wild deer (the deer are Reh and Hirsch, and Reh is milder) here every Autumn, in normal butchers, so Germans are more used to it and it appears on restaurant menus for a while. By biscuits I assume you mean American savoury scones of some sort. Scones for dinner, that sounds good. Never tried elk, sadly. I don't think they live here.

An elk is a kind of red deer, if I remember correctly. So... Rothirsch?

No, it's Elch in German. I believe Hirsch is red deer, Reh is roe deer. (All three are apparently from the same family of deer.) I searched and found an article explaining that elk are slowly returning to Germany, along with wolves and lynx. But we only have about ten, so it would be very rude to eat one.
