As we head into the remaining days of the year, I’m grateful for all that I have accomplished in 2023. I’m focusing on squaring things up at the tail end of the year: turning in last assignments; making some small organizational decisions; and focusing on rest. The success matrix remains the same: having my homework done and my house clean.

The stats skill tree has grown this year, and I’m very glad I took this approach to my challenges. It’s easy for me to lose sight of what I accomplished six weeks ago, and I’ll be thinking about how I want to level-set the skills going into 2024. In a lot of ways, when I look at the stats where they are now, I think they are descriptively accurate. I am not sure how much more I can add, and it will be an interesting exercise to see what sort of skill enhancing I can add in, kind of like finding Seven League Boots (a car) or a Bag of Holding (better organization in my backpack) or a Thinking Cap (the academy’s writing center has been a godsend boost).

I definitely need to rest and recover. Last challenge I expanded my activities beyond what I thought I would ever be able to manage, and I did it with grace and dignity even when I had no clue how it would work. I am proud of all that, and also I know that grace and dignity need rest, too, just like any other muscle that gets a workout. The biggest gain was to Stamina. While it was only a couple points overall, that there were any gains at all is a big deal. And to keep that, I’ll need to have a bit of a recovery period.

This is a time of strategic retreat, a time to shelter inside during the gathering darkness and nurture the embers.

Welcome.
Pull up a seat by the fire, and tell me about your day.

Happy to follow for relaxation and recovery

Yes, so much rest and recovery is needed. Happy to have you here!

Today is a day.

Yesterday I made my final tuition payment and signed up for a class for Spring after talking with the committee all afternoon about research methods and approaches and the like. It was a good conversation, and I'm glad to be signing up for this course, which focuses on field work in the social sciences. I'll likely taoilor my research projects around interviews with school librarians, and I've set up a meeting with Librarian Shannon to talk about these sorts of things on December 11. Thankfully, this conversation is after everything that remains for the term is already delivered. I think this is good. I won't be signing up for any other classes while I take this one in the Spring, unless Librarian Shannon and I decide to do an independent study on the professionalism of school librarians, which might become its own section in the dissertation, and I'd like that. This, too, is Wise and Good.

This is the time of year when I want to gather blankets around me, nestle down and faff about with planners and datebooks and markers and stickers. I think that it will be a perfect activity with Vivian on Sunday, since we'll both probably be wiped out from the Playoff game on Saturday, which will take most-if-not-all of the day. Also, our new planners should be here in time for a bit of nesting and I have some stickers and washi tape that I picked out with Vivian in mind.

The work front is chaos.

I'm having difficulty engaging with the school needs. I have two things due this weekend, which means Friday, really, and I'm not inclined to work on either of them. For now, I'm working on the first one in small bites, literally one sentence and one reference at a time. This is the Way. I'll see how far I get on that before 6 this evening and send the rough draft to Stella, who is my +1 to INT (maybe plus a lot more than one, actually).  This is the Way.

Learning Reflection assignment rough draft submitted to Stella. This is due on Saturday (so, that means Friday). I will need to add another paragraph or two to both sections that I covered, but this is pretty simple, and I'm feeling solid about what I managed to craft together. I still have nothing meaningful for the poster assignment due Sunday (so, that also means Friday), but that's something for later. One step at a time, and then rest. This is the Way.

Food for the week is here; I haven't put anything away yet except the eggs and cheese, but that's okay too.

the house is a bit of a jumble.

all will be well.

I honestly hadn't given it much thought yet, though this sounds like a very nice way to go about it. I typically continue as if the challenge never really ended so I think forcing me to take a break will actually be more beneficial.

I think having a couple extra days to wrap things up will really help me reflect on the challenge - what I did well, what went sideways, and all the other little tidbits I often forget or overlook while rushing through it. Having a solid reflection will also help me better set up the next challenge since I do so many of the same things but slightly advanced (progressive overload if you will). I like this. I think this is Wise. You are rubbing off on me and I'm grateful for it.

You don't have to be perfect, you just have to be better than you were before. Do that every day and you will succeed.

I found the now-old format left very little reflection space, and I missed it, so I would build in reflections along the way. That practice helped me be more reflective in real time, but I am very grateful for this dedicated quiet space at the end of the challenge. Feel free to share your insights and thoughts along the way; we go farther together.

Today is okay enough.

I slept weirdly, something that is becoming a trend. It's not just the schedule that is odd, but then I'm dreaming like a full-on science fiction show while I'm asleep and have to reorient myself for a long time when I wake up. Like, no, this is not a time travel loop, and all those conversations I was just in the middle of are not real, and holy moly, I hope there is tea.

I'm still having difficulty eating. The discomfort means I don't want to eat, and it also means that I'm actively uncomfortable after I eat. Then, bizarrely (or maybe just because I'm freaking exhausted), about 60 minutes after I eat I'm snoozing, regardless of the clock time. I've started working with this, trying to talor eating around preferred sleeping times. This is not really working, but it's not making things worse, either, and it is helping make sure I actually eat.

I haven't done anything yet on the poster project.

I've sent a few emails this morning.

I'm tired.

I like the new format of waiting a few days before the new challenge is up. Like you, I like a little reflection space. I like time to look back and see how it went. Life can be so busy. I think part of the beauty of challenges is the intentional slowing down and making sure our lives are heading in the direction we want them to be.

I'm interested to see if this becomes a feature of the new format generally.

This morning is here, and I am awake and doing things.

I absolutely need to get something on the page for the research poster today. Even if it's garbage that I edit into oblivion tomorrow, I have to do this, and I have to do it soon, since the Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting in one of the nearby towns is this evening and Vivian's marching band is participating. She dropped me a text (with some hilarious gifs) to ask if I would be coming to the parade. I'll probably take the bus after work, and I really have too much to do to be running around in the cold, but this is Band Parent Life, and I'm glad she's getting to participate.

I'm feeling overwhelmed, and the apartment isn't in a state that I like. It's going to need some attention when I get back from the parade, for certain. The downside of living in a small space is that a little mess goes a long way; the upside of living in a small space is that there's not much effort needed to get it set back to rights.

But first, about that poster.

get something on the page for the research poster today. Even if it's garbage that I edit into oblivion tomorrow,

Write first.  Edit later.  Maybe let yourself free-write for 15 minutes and see what comes out?

Poster draft complete. I still need to add a graphic, and I have a couple in mind. I can't do it from the work computer, so I'll probably take a gander at this during lunch and see if I can add it as intended.

The second half of this assignment is an Oral Presentation audio file, mostly a "hey, this is intersting becuase . . . . " minute or two. I'm aiming for 90 seconds. 30% of this grade is "Engagement with Audience: Presenter engages with questions and comments left by classmates in Module 15 discussion thread." Friends, there is no discussion thread on module 15. Not on module 14 either, which is the module in which we deliver the assignment. I was wondering if I was looking in the wrong place, so I dropped a note in the overall discussion thread, and Firends, the professor acted like she didn't know what I was talking about. *facepalm*

Yes, I clarified.

This professor is a dumpster fire.

Pray for her.

I'll bet you are going to do a happy dance when you are done with this class.

Planning note: with the new format of challenges opening on Thursday, I'll be doing a challenge wrap-up week instead of a Zero Week.

In a lot of ways, I think I like this approach better.

Do you guys have any thoughts on the new format?

I like it. You might notice that I just got my new challenge posted today. This format helps me feel like I'm not running behind.

I think everyone can write zero week comments in their old challenge instead of in the new challenge. That is a minor adjustment. I like having more time for reflection.

A note in @Mistr's thread about her dojo has me thinking about my martial arts non-journey this past year.

I don't have time or space for a new commitment with the studies and the legal drama, so this past year instead of signing up for a class, I sat with wondering what sort of class I wanted to commit to. I already knew that the yoga classes in town weren't doing it for me, and the t'ai chi instructors were too far away. I did some notes on classes nearer-by, and then did some reading every few weeks in the various traditions. Sourhtern Kung Fu seems like a good possibility and the instructor at the nearby dojo is solid. I am leaning more toward  Aikido than ever, even though I have no idea how I'll make it work or manage transportation. I'd like to sign up in January or May, now that the classes are not drowning me and Marching Band season is complete. I'm not looking for an "exercise class" so much as I'm looking for a dojo home, and this one has been the one I've returned to all year long.

The Way will open.
