Late to the Party

Just found Nerd Fitness and decided to get in on the action. Thirteen days is still plenty of time to accomplish some goals.

In Febuary, I started a work routine to get me back into shape to play rugby by August. I've reached all my initial goals and proceeded to my level two goals, but surgery on the 18th had me out of the gym all last week. For my challenge, and since I have limited time, I will to set my goals to get me back to my pre-surgery form and then some. But first, my character sheet:

With my 5'6 160 lb frame and my large appetite, I feel I fit best as a Dwarf. My philosophical/religious view can be categorized as Agnostic Rationalist Jedi. I follow the tenets and philosophy of the Jedi, but have my reservations about believing in the Force, or anything supernatural for that matter. Instead, science and the methods of rationality form my beliefs and ideas. As a Jedi, and now Ranger, I have a lifetime goal of being a Master-of-all-Trades, not just a Jack. This requires that I push mind, body, and spirit harder to learn and develop in areas where I am not proficient. I use every opportunity to train and perfect techniques and skills. Nothing is off limits, nothing is left behind.

Attributes

•Strength (STR) - 3

•Dexterity (DEX) - 3

•Stamina (STA) - 3

•Constitution (CON) - 3

•Wisdom (WIS) - 2

•Charisma (CHA) - 1

I am well balanced in speed, strength, and stamina. I always aim to balance these three attributes in my training as pushing one further than the others can result in injury. As for injury, I have always been tough enough to battle through most ailments and remain competitive. I'm smart and always looking for answers with a well developed memory, but I do lack in the intuition department. My Jedi training is pushing me to expand my intuition, but growth is slow. Lastly, charisma is certainly my weak point. I'm not great at interacting with people. I'm not very attractive. I lack confidence in public speaking. My Jedi and career training lead me to a club called Toastmasters, which is helping me with my charisma.

Now for the goal setting. Before my surgery, for 1 set 3 reps my bench press was 160 lbs and leg press was 570 lbs while my running times were down to 6:46 for 1 mile and 15:29 for 2 mile. Of course, I do plenty of other exercises with their own goals, but these will be the milestones which I'll track for the challenge.

So here are my fitness goals:

  1. Reach all four previous milestones. +1 STR, +1 DEX, +1 STA, +1 CON
  2. Add 5 lbs to each lift milestone, drop 15 seconds off each time milestone. +2 STR, +2 DEX, +2 STA, +1 CON

My dietary goal:

  • Eat a fruit or vegetable with lunch or dinner 20 times during the next 13 days. +1 CON

My life goal:

  • Complete Lesson 3 "Meditation for Self Discovery" and Exercise 4 "Mantras" from my Jedi Training Meditation 101 course workbook. +2 WIS, +1 CHA

I plan to update this thread weekly with my fitness and life goal progress. Daily, I update a journal at my Jedi training site plus an Excel spreadsheet to track my goals and progress.

Daily, I will update this thread with my dietary goal progress.

5/30 Lunch

Grilled peppers and onions on a sausage sub. If I was eating alone, then I might have attempted a bite of the pickle served with my sub, but I decided it would be rude to vomit in front of my lunch mates.

5/30 Dinner

Carrots, green beans, and black olives in a pasta salad. Lettuce, jalapenos, and onion on a homemade cheeseburger.

Two down, 18 to go.

Lunch: Pizza and French fries. Does tomato sauce count? No? Shucks, first missed meal. I'll make it up at dinner time by eating mostly salad, hopefully, but it is still a miss.

Dinner: Carrots and onion in a beef stew. Ate pretty light. I would have dowsed a salad in dressing anyway.

Fitness Goals: This morning I got on the bench and leg press to see if I could meet or surpass my goals. I did really well on both, meeting 3 of the 4 milestones set. I benched 150, 155, 160 lbs doing two sets three reps each. My second set of 160 was rough and I didn't feel I could get 165 more than once, so I left it for next time. I started the leg press at 500 doing 5 reps thinking I'd go up slowly. With all the pounding I've given my knee joints over the years, I plan to baby them for my remaining ones. I went up to 530 and 550 with ease, so I took a shot at 570. It was tough, but I got 5 reps in. I decided to just do it and complete the 575 goal. I banged out five more reps easier than I thought. Running tomorrow should be fine, but I'll just go for 1 mile at 7 minute pace and see where it leads.

Lunch: Lettuce, green pepper, onion on a Sunrise Subway Melt

Dinner: Lettuce, red, yellow, and orange peppers, onion in a taco salad

Fitness Goals: I ran 1 mile in 6:29 which is perfect. I started fast and slowed my pace each quarter mile to save for my kick. I kicked hard the last tenth of a mile and made it just in time. It was an exhausting run, but not a debilitating one. I don't think I'll be doing that again for a while. I really need to push the distance to get my lungs in better shape. Friday I'll go for the 2 mile.

Lunch: Lettuce on sandwich with chips

Dinner: Lettuce, peppers, onion salad with steak. Moderate amount of dressing on the side to dip. No starches before, during, or after dinner.

Dietary Goal Update: I had vegetables or fruit 22 meals out of 25 not counting dinner tonight. Vegetables mostly consisted of peppers, onion, and lettuce. Carrots, green beans, and peas are some of my favorites, but I had difficulty incorporating them into lunch as I didn't always have them in house. My wife's garden has started sprouting lettuce, peas, and grean beans, so it should be easier going forward. Fruits for me will allows be hard to come by as I don't like many fruits. Red apple, lemon, lime, and tomato are about it. I can do some juices and should focus on making sure I drink more juice, especially orange juice.

Life Goal Update: I completed the Lesson and Exercise for my Meditation 101 course at IJRS.
