Chris Returns to the Rangers

Recommended Posts

Chris-Tien has escaped the Tower of the Wizards, where she was tricked into writing the Book of Knowledge, a task that took long 9 years of her life and transported her to the Inland Sea. She has lost most of her strength, stamina, and dexterity while laboring over a desk. Muscle tone is gone, and she looks all of her 51 years old - with dull grey/brown hair and pasty skin covered in a loose, grey wizard's robe.

After her escape, Chris sheltered for a week with a kindly half-orc barbarian, tending his house, dog, and cat while he traveled. Now, our former-Ranger has turned her face to the north-west, intending to traverse the 164 miles that separate her from home where she will reunite with friends and family - and rejoin the Rangers, if they will have her after this long absence.

Ooops! Yes, the Homelands goal is a walking/running distance goal. I have a 4.5 mile route mapped out (actually 2.25 x 2 just in case I'm having trouble jumping up to that level right away). I plan to cover some distance daily, but will keep working on the C25K plan every other day. I am using an iPhone app as a guide to increase my running distance gradually - I've used it before with good results.

The strength aspect is just a matter of working as many as I can every other day. I'll have to start will wall pushups, then knee pushups, and then regular push ups. I used to study karate, and I know I can get to level 1 Cross-Fit with persistence and time.

Paleo diet has given me trouble in the past. I have a sweet tooth!! I managed to get 44% paleo meals last challenge, and I'm going to aim to get to eating more than 1/2 this time around. Without knowing what it was called, I've eaten that way before - I just have to develop new habits.

The job part is partially out of my control - but I have been sending off an application per day, and I now have a number of interviews this coming week. The worst part is NOT taking a job in a different city (we JUST MOVED) unless it is a great job. I have an opportunity locally and need to set up an interview with those folks .... soon.

I think it is all feasible.

Hey, Chris! Excellent goals and good luck meeting them! I'm certain your fellow Rangers will welcome you back with open arms. I've recently joined them thanks to your posting of the NF link at IJRS. Now, get walking! 164 miles in 42 days is going to be quite a trip ;-).

I started running from zombies yesterday. Lots of fun. I almost yelled out, "Zombies! Run!" to some people I jogged passed.

LOL - and a bunch of friends started talking about the app, asking if it was worth the price. I am heartily recommending it. I had tried some other "zombie running" apps and was frustrated with their inflexibility.

Thanks! Suddenly, I had a week full of interviews!! Good luck on your job search as well, Loren!

Today, I planted trees and worked on the yard ... and while I remembered to drink plenty of water, I totally forgot to wear sunscreen or a hat. :hopelessness: When I changed to go out for my run, my husband pointed out that I was pretty pink, but I put on a hat and went anyway. I'll either have to find the box that has the sunscreen in it - or buy another tube.

I know - I freckle and burn more than tan. I'd just gotten so used to the generally cloudy conditions in Duluth that I forgot that days can be sunny - ALL DAY - in other parts of the Midwest.

Today is, naturally, dark and wet, but that is good for the new trees. So, I planned out the next four days' of menus - aiming mostly at Paleo meals. Wish I could find the grill!!!

Walked/ran intervals with the ZR! app again today, and I am slowly increasing my overall pace. I'm letting my running shoes dry today (we got soaked yesterday!) but might actually squeeze in a C25K run tonight.

I've lost 1 1.2 pounds so far!

Did the fifth zombies run mission and upped my pace a bit more. True to the app's story and the focus of the Rangers for functional fitness, I'm doing more trail running (walking) than road running while participating. I need to get back into C25K swing -- hopefully this evening won't be too hot.

This morning, I did knee pushups for the first time in .... um, not sure how long. Harder than wall pushups, but I did my 10. Will have to increase those on the way to doing "real" push ups again.

Did 15 situps in a row (1/2 of goal number) and 25 body weight squats (1/2 of goal number).

Getting better!!!

I also got my copy of Well Fed last night and started planning meals around meat, veggies, fruits and good fats. My husband is interested in "deliberate eating" ... despite being diabetic, he really does not want to participate in anything that seems like a diet ... but worried about the cost of eating Paleo. We were both raised by parents who went through the Depression and were always told to fill up on breads and pastas to make the "good stuff" stretch further. Interesting on how the fillers didn't just fill up our stomachs but also added 40 to 60 pounds of unhealthy pounds. Have to see how this works out.

The only thing I don't like about the app is I have to run more than 2.3 miles or about 30 minutes to complete the mission. You can pause, but no save and exit. I wish they tailored the mission length to your run specifications, or allowed you to select missions based off distance, duration, or pace. I'm going to write the developers sometime soon. I have a few other ideas to help enhance the experience.

Good ideas, Nick. I almost had to shorten a run yesterday as I noticed a worker had arrived at our house EARLY (how often does that happen?), and I turned around earlier than expected. The mission ended JUST as I hit our driveway .....

Checking in on goals ...

Weight 169.5 lbs ... lost two pounds, woot!

Reach homelands ... gotta kick up the distance per day

Complete Week 7 of the C25K plan .... been inconsistent, but I can still do this if I can settle into a running routine

Be able to do 10 pushups, 50 squats and 30 situps ... can do 10 knee pushups, 25 squats, and 15 sit ups and am increasing the number slowly

Eat off the land (paleo diet) 55% of the time ... sitting at 60% as of this morning!! Eating out is one of my hardest challenges, and grabbing something when I'm busy often has me falling back into old patterns.
