I absolutely loved the Wheel of Time Series, I believe the only downfall to it ends up being what you call the fluff. The only thing I dislike about Robert Jordan's writing style is that he over-describes things. Its really awesome for author's to go into intricate detail about some things, but I think Mr. Jordan went a little overboard with that some times.

The first 4 (maybe 5) books were great.  I struggled through the middle ones, largely due to the over description, and I'm a sucker for detailed descriptions.  The last 3 books were awesome as well.  If you can make it through the middle ones, you'll enjoy it.

I'm not sure if I just have over-fond memories of Lord of the Rings, but the escape from the Shire to the Prancing Pony and then the terror-filled sprint to Rivendell seemed to go by really fast in the books. Right now, The Dark One and his minions (Trollocs and others) are chasing Rand, Perrin, and Mat but I don't know why. If I don't find out WHY these boys are so important, or at least some other clues to the story, I'll start losing interest. It's fun to read adventure and escape, but only for so long.

I'm currently reading Black Powder War by Naomi Novik. I picked up the first in the Temeraire series last week and went through the first two books already. I picked up the fourth and fifth books today because I was near the book store.

About 1/3 of the way through the first book in Scott Lynch's Gentlemen Bastard series. "The Lies of Locke Lamora"

Loving it so far.

Also about 1/2 way through "The Arms of Krupp" which is basically a biography of a German weapons (and other stuff) manufacturing family - the "head" of the family at the time was tried at Nuremburg.  Very well written.  I'm a sucker for WWII stuff.

Just finished Mark Lawrence's Prince, King and Emperor of Thorns (3 books) - These were fantastic.

The Warded Man by Peter V. Brett was also pretty good, I'll probably continue on with the series.

The Way of Shadows by Brent Weeks - I'm not sure how I felt about this one.

Malice by John Gwynne - overwhelming meh.

Arcacia: The War with the Mein by David Anthony Durham.  Loved it.  Have the 2nd book waiting for me.

Just finished "The Guns of the Navarone" - never read it and it was a classic. An easy read.

Reading "Not a good day to die" - An interesting book about Operation Anaconda. Hand in hand with this is the third Legacy of the Force book (the name escapes me), which is basically my candy for the brain read.

Books books books I LOVE books!

Lately I have a hankering for YA fiction (I blame the summertime) and I just read Matched by Ally Condie.  It was much better than I thought it would be and I'm on a wait list for my library's e-copy of the next book.  Right now I'm reading Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson.  Heavy but really really good.

Tell me, if you had the strength to take another step, could you do it?

This summer I enjoyed "The Mercenary's Guide to Ruined Seattle" (by NF's own Will Hose/Spark) and Terry Pratchett's "Sourcery". I dug out Chuck Pahlinuk's "Haunted" from it's hiding place, but couldn't muster the courage to open its pages again. Had been reading Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged" before the summer, might have to get back to it again. Also bought some wonderful RPG rulebooks, namely Chaosium's "Call of Cthulhu" and the Iron Kingdoms core rulebook that I should get to.

Amazing thread! I just maxed out my library requests O_O Hopefully they don't all come in at once...

The Heritage of Shannara sub-series

(nostalgic for grade school days...always left the library with a nice big pile. When I was riding my bike once I got in an accident with a car...I credit my heavy backpack for making me turn to fall on on my back instead of my shoulder-which had a broken collarbone from impact with the car. If I had hit the ground with my shoulder/arm as naturally happens when falling on a bike, it couldn't have been good for my already-overlapping collarbone. So that's what I think about when I see the Shannara books. :redface-new: Totally fine now btw. )

Honor Bound-W.E.B. Griffin --ok fun read, a little slower at the beginning than expected. yet another military-political-action novel. need something to intersperse the epics

The Navigator-Clive Cussler --got this on audiobook...soooo much slower than reading i might give up, I find self-help-y books better for listening apparently. It's hard for me to follow this way

Wolfblade-Jennifer Fallon--literally just opened this, the library has the rest of the trilogy so hoping it's good

I love to read. On top of the illustration books I have been working on.

Dust On The Sea (a really old book I got at a benefit)

Starting to re-read the dresden files from the beginning.

My collection of James Bond books that I bought 10 years ago and never read.

I also read and reference You are your Own Gym and Real Men Do Yoga. I read them once through every month or so.
