Quest for Abs, part 1

Absidey

Recommended Posts

Basically, I want to be able to go anywhere and do anything. I don't want my fears (heights), weight, or weakness to prevent me from experiencing anything I wants. This is for me and for my family.

November 2011 Stats:

183 lbs

44.3% Body fat (this one hurt!) [Edit: Looked it up, November was actually 47.2%, the 44.3% was in January 2011, while I was still staying at home with my Kate.]

40" waist

I got serious about making myself better October 27, the day after my daughter's second birthday. I joined a gym near my house and signed up for a team training weight loss class, and I joined Weight Watchers. I committed to the 3-day a week class and really pushed myself. I ended up dropping Weight Watchers for My Fitness Pal to watch my macros. After the weight loss class, I graduated to the "fitness" class, which mixed in weights with more intense cardio.

Around that time, I saw pictures of a girl who'd lost a lot of weight lifting, and started to explore that more. That's where I'm focusing now, now that my team training class is done. I am really excited about it. I also want to get in some yoga, which I've missed for the last 6 months. (Hate the during, love the after.)

Current Stats:

174 lbs

37.2% Body fat

31.5" waist

My goals for the challenge

1) Taking care of the temple. > +1 CON, +1 STA COMPLETE, +1-2 DEX FAILED(dependent on improvement method)

  • Get a daily supplement box.

  • Get magnesium supplements to counter deficiency

  • Everyday! Take multi, magnesium, allergy, and fish oil pills. 85% compliance required.

  • **Bonus** Test flexibility at end of 6 weeks to see if insufficient magnesium is culprit of decreased flexibility. If improved back to April levels, +1 Dex.

Edit: I'm tweaking this, because I'm meh on adding another supplement. I'm going to find and try a mobility workout for a couple of weeks to see if it helps. If yes, no magnesium, and if I can improve my reach test by 2 inches by the end of the challenge, then +2 Dex. (and the +1 Dex for magnesium testing is removed.)

2) FAILED Start phase 1 of NROL4W, improve deadlift and squat numbers by 10 lbs each > +1 STR, +1 STA

  • Deadlist PB is 65lbs

  • Squat PB is 75lbs

3) FAILED Reduce waist 1.5" > +1 CHA, +1 CON

4) COMPLETE Move! All boxes unpacked by conclusion of the challenge. > +1 STA (Life goal. The move is increased flexibility and lower expenses with the goal of quitting my job, finishing my ADN/RN, and moving out! of! Texas! Is there a stat for happiness? =D)

My goals this time are pretty modest, but reasonable I think. I'm moving into a new apartment tomorrow, closing on my house next week, and going on vacation the week after. And everyday is an adventure with a 2-year-old at home. I'll be working on getting my food and tracking back in line after vacation, just no specific goals for it. I'm out of breath just thinking about it.

Mini Challenge #1 - +1 WIS COMPLETE

Copied from Challenge Thread:

So.. to sum it up in a life-planny way: I need to put more time into my warm-up and cool-down phases, but not stretch more. My plan to do more yoga is a good one, as is my general rule to not do something if it doesn't feel right (in yoga and out). Also, stress could be causing some of my issues, and putting more effort into relaxing and unwinding could net more than the obvious benefits. (Pesky stressesis.) The magnesium is not to be ruled out, though I didn't mention it here, because it was prior research.

Mini Challenge #2 - +1 WIS, +1 CON available FAILED

you only get points if you follow through with this plan 100%. And if you continue to follow through with scheduling for the rest of the month, there’s a chance to get more points. Here’s how the points will work:

Well, I'm moved. Still a few things at my house I need to go back for, but we knocked a lot out today. Every creaking inch of me is sore, and I have a plethora of mini bruises prettifying all over. Kate's room is mostly done, the rest of the house, ehhh. Not so much. No internet at the apartment until Monday, which is painful, but at least I have my phone. Yay for Verizon dude who honored my expired-by-one-day warranty! No magnesium. Can't find it in the right calcium ratio, so I might have to order online.

I tried, but my isp didn't let me pick my activation date. Meh! Technically, my house is still wired, but we are pretty much all moved now. Have one trip worth of odds and ends and the computers to bring over.

Should be able to finish getting everything out of the house tonight, perhaps give it a quick clean tomorrow. We've already unpacked a good bit, but now we have a bunch of miscellaneous boxes with no clear homes, so that will probably take longer to put away. Need more lighting in the living room!

I ordered my pill pack thingie, but I'm on the fence now about the magnesium supplement. Cyninga linked me a list of magnesium containing foods, and I've been eating more of them than I ever have in my life. I think I'm going to hop in the mini-challenge (ending tomorrow, lol) to see if I can find some other things to try for countering the decreases in flexibility I've seen over the last three months.

Tonight I get to set up my internet at home, yay! I also put in my change of address for my driver's license, so I can join my city's super cool and ultra cheap gym when it comes. I'm planning to spend this week unpacking, next week travelling, and then jump into my lifting and yoga program on the 27th. I want to work out my tracking sheets, because I never remember how many reps I'm supposed to be doing.

I showed off my bruises at work this morning, always fun. It's too hot to wear pants or pantyhose no matter how torn up my legs are. I don't bruise easily, so I'm actually a little proud of them. Like temporary badges of honor, or something.

Pondering the Krav Maga place near my new home. On the one hand, more fun now! On the other hand, I feel like anything not totally necessary pulling resources away from my family's long term goals is selfish. If I can drop my gym membership with the Addison club, I think I can justify going to the rock wall gym once or twice a month, especially if Bobby can come too, but martial arts intruction is way more expensive. Hmm.

So I've poked around a lot more, looked up Parkour for Assassins, and read a bit in each of the guilds' forums, and I'm pretty sure I'll end up with the rangers. Some of their challenge threads are really ambitious and way over my head though, so maybe I need to hang here more than a challenge or two. Anyone else feel intimidated by their potential profession?

The house is closing today! Weeee! Went over this morning after dropping off the Kate Monster, because I forgot to check a bathroom cabinet when I checked all the rooms yesterday. I was tempted to leave it, but it was the cabinet we kept our cat box scoop bucket, so I couldn't. Good thing, because I discovered we'd also left a stack of magazines on the back of the toilet: Mental Floss, Maxim, and ZOMG PORN. So yeah. Thorough final walkthroughs = good thing.

Regarding my goals - I got my pill minder thing yesterday and loaded it up this morning. Woohoo! I also bought a really neat sandwich container, with a water tight section for tomatos and pickles and meats so the bread isn't soggy. I'm really excited to start using it for epic sandwiches. Mmmm, must buy banana peppers.

The unpacking is coming along. I was lazy last night, but I've been busting my ass for 3 weeks, and I needed a break. I booked our hotel room for vacation next week, yay! Kate's daycare is closed the Monday we were going back to work, so I'll take that Monday off instead of Monday next week, so it's not a solid 9 days off, but oh well.

We're going to Sea World in San Antonio, visiting family in Louisiana, and taking "just us" day trip into New Orleans. (Kate will stay with her grandparents.) I was super excited, but then I was preoccupied by everything with the house. Now I'm getting excited again. I can't wait for Katie to see a whale for the first time.

hey just checking in - sounds like you've got a lot on your hands, but handling it well. moving is a big pain, so hopefully you'll be all unpacked ASAP. have fun on vacation, and hope you're able to still keep up with your goals while on the road! New Orleans = awesome. :)

Thanks! Definitely looking forward to the trip. Some time off and away is a necessity at this point.

Edited my OP to add stuff about the mini challenges. Also tweaked my body health goal. I don't like relying on supplements too much, and I really want to keep it to my multivitamin and fish oil. I'm going to try a physical solution first, THEN magnesium if I don't see an improvement.

Yeah, I'm definitely feeling intimidated since I'd like to maybe go warriors but that kind of scares the crap out of me. But it's good to have a goal that takes some doing, I suppose? :)

But yeah, it sounds like you're doing well! :D You should let us know how the kidlet likes the whale. :3

Definitely! We decided to take the trip when Kate freaked after I told her whales and sharks live in the water. I wasn't allowed to touch her underwater play animals for about 2 weeks, in case I got the idea to release them into their natural habitat. She can be a little dramatic. =)

And hooray for closing on the house! That's got to be a huge relief.

Ohhh, yes. Feels great to finally have it done with. I'm really looking forward to everything getting back to a routine.

NROLFW is a lot of fun. It's really what transitioned me from tae kwon do to Brazilian jiu-jitsu -- I started with NROLFW, liked lifting heavy things, outgrew my home gym quickly, and went looking for something else. Four years later, and I'm just now starting to get back in to lifting, this time at a nearby gym.

And having moved about a year ago myself, unpacking boxes definitely counts as "something active."

Updated mini-challenge above. And main goal # 4 completed. I don't know how we did it (in a week!), but nothing is still in a box. Not everything is put away, and there's a stack of boxes to dispose of, but I'm satisfied.

And it rained today! Any day with rain is a good day, but I may try for the pool if it's clear tomorrow.

I don't know how much I'll be checking in after this - will depend on how packed our days are. We're leaving for San Antonio as soon as I get off work. I want to comment on my recent diet, though, because I was excited. (Diet as in: the diet of this creature consists of, not: OMG, lose 30 pounds in 3 weeks on the Kool-Aid and cough drops diet!)

So everything is unpacked, right? That means I got to use my kitchen! Squee! We're been living on cheap take out for the last month almost exclusively, and my body has been complaining. Even though the food I made over the weekend wasn't the best in the nutritional sense, I feel SO MUCH BETTER. Parmesan risotto and Thai peanut chicken, both out of a box, and a stir fry of minimally freezer burned bits? Yeah, not great, but wow. So much better than even the best of the worst at McD's or Wendy's or the Korean-Chinese place down the street. I can't wait until I get to go shopping next week and stock my fridge with fresh food. Just need to get through 3 long car trips and 3 days in Cajun Country, and I'll be free from food purgatory. I've always "given up" fast food in the past. After a few months enjoying genuinely clean eating, then eating it out of necessity, I feel like I'm escaping it this time.

Going to rant a little and hopefully get it out of my system, so I can enjoy the trip. Today, we are going to New Orleans to explore. We planned to leave Katie with her grandparents and have an easygoing, no plans meander around. Last night, the grandparents decided they wanted to come along and that we should leave as early as possible so we could have breakfast in New Orleans. I am a little grumpy about being crammed in the backseat of my little civic with a carseat containing a toddler equally grumpy about waking up early to get in the car after our 7 hour drive yesterday. I was so looking forward to what we had planned for today, I'm having a hard time looking forward to what we are doing instead.

I'm home, yay! Man, I'm wiped. Vacation was slightly less relaxing than I'd hoped, but we had a good time. Sea World was pretty awesome: Katie is still telling everyone who will listen about being splashed by the orca. I'll post some pictures later. New Orleans was cool, but I'd like to go back some time without Kate or when she's old enough to be interested in the history. As it was, I had to very speedily wander the Saint Louis Cathedral, and that was the only thing we really attempted to look around inside. She liked the beignet at Cafe du Monde and we had a nice picnic lunch in Jackson Square.

I think I failed the mini-challenge. I did not track down and consume something from the waffle truck. *hangs head* Of all things to mess up, huh? We just ran out of time. One day a delicious waffle delicacy will be mine! We didn't see as much family as intended either, and it seems like we were gone a lot less time than we actually were. Maybe because of all the driving? Sooo nice to be out of the car! Between crap beds and couches and packed-into-small-car for more than 26 hours since Monday, my back is all knotted and sore all over. I'm thinking about going to bed very early tonight so I can just lie still a little extra.

Now that that's done, I have a lot of planning to do. Immediate stuff, like meals for next week and figuring out the new monthly budget. And long term stuff, like plugging in the monthly budget to my income forecast, and determining how fast I can pay back the loan we took out to pay off the house, and from there, when I can feasibly quit my job and go back to school! (gulp) Would it be too bad of me to pretend I don't have all that to do and spend the weekend slacking off at the pool?

Routine? What's that?

Really, I'm building all new ones. I haven't been cooking since we listed the house for sale in March, so I'm relearning how to budget time for that. Our freezer is way smaller, so I can't cook and freeze a bunch of easy breakfast/lunch foods to grab on my way out the door in the morning, so I'm trying to figure out new ways to make sure I pack my own food. My training class ended just before we moved, and I'm changing gyms, so my workout routine is non-existant. I'm a mess, for serious.
