There is never a sudden revelation, a complete and tidy explanation for why it happened, or why it ends, or why or who you are. You want one and I want one, but there isn't one. It comes in bits and pieces, and you stitch them together wherever they fit, and when you are done you hold yourself up, and still there are holes and you are a rag doll, invented, imperfect. And yet you are all that you have, so you must be enough. There is no other way.

Cradle Episcopalian here.

For those who don't know what Episcopalians are, we're like Catholics w/out all the guilt...(hehe), or as I call it, Catholic Lite. My wife was raised Catholic, being Mexican and all, but she switched over.

I was one of the born-and-raised Catholics who never actually thought about the faith. These days I'm on my way to developing a deeper relationship with Jesus, but I have a very keen appreciation of how the "anxieties of the world" can distract (this week's Gospel reading, ironically). I never thought something could be so all-consuming until I got to law school finals month. Now it's all fear and stress. I spoke to an ex-lawyer priest who understands "the spirit of the season" (and not Advent :P), and he recommended starting to pray the Divine Office. Has anyone done that before? Do you have a handy cheat sheet? I looked through the guide that comes with the book, and it made no sense :smilet-digitalpoint That's my project over break; understand the format and what to do, then implement it. Yeah... right now I'm in a rocky place.

Completely off subject here... But we should petition for a Templar class (; anyways, pardon my ill manners. I'm a Roman Catholic, glad to see other Christians. Now I'm not your typical practicing catholic. I don't go to church, I believe self-study is the way to go, although I could use a good primer on how to study the bible lol. I went thru many of the catholic phases when I was younger but now as an adult I lack some serious spiritual experience. Anybody have any suggestions on where to begin? (Please don't mention attending mass) I can go off on a rant about that some other time.

If you have a smart phone or a tablet device, download an app called Youversion. It not only have practically every version of the Bible available for reading, but also offers a wide range of study plans. You could choose one that helps you get through the whole Bible in a year, or maybe just focuses on New Testament. There are also lots of daily devotional plans, or subject specific plans (depression, joy, relationships). Some are as short as three brief lessons, others are, as I said, a full year's worth of readings. You can go at your own pace, but they break it up into a manageable daily chunk. I need to get back into it (grad school sort of took over this semester), but for the summer I was pretty consistently reading 15 minutes each night before bed.

PH is right, this is a GREAT app. I have it on my phone and use is virtually everywhere. Not to mention they do have a website too, so you can always pick up on you reading plan or what not wherever you are. The bookmark feature is also nice for remembering where you were last.

If you ever need to do any in depth study, you can also go to www.studylight.org It takes a bit to get used to navigating around there, but they have links to several commentaries that can also help out too as you go through verses.

Youversion is an awesome App. Its on droid for sure as I have it on my phone and tablet. I'm pretty sure I had it on my BlackBerry before that. So I'd be shocked if it wasn't on IOS.

Anyway another Christian Nerd checking in! I grew up in a church (where my dad works). When I joined the Military I tried a few churches and got disgusted with the amount of hypocrisy I saw around me. This lead me to shelve any religion for many many years. My girlffiend attended a small church here, I wouldn't describe her as religious, more spiritual. She taught me that its about pursuing the relationship with God. It's not about the hymns, or church functions. You read to word, you pray and you meditate not because you have to but because you WANT to, You do it to get to know the one who made you. It was a real eye opener for me. My faith is stronger than it has ever been, and I'm now part of a church filled with the most genuine people.

I'm trying (and sometimes failing) to live my life by the simple sentence that was on the hidden track of the W's cd. "Love God, Love others" Its pretty much a rewrite of the Golden rule. I figure if I can do those two things, everything else will fall into place!

Amen! That's the truth right there. That's exactly what Jesus said in Mark 12:29-31

“The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’There is no commandment greater than these.”

I've been a Christian since September of 2005. Was raised Jewish, but never really followed the religion or felt that it was something for me. I attend a Presbyterian Church (PCA) because I like the message and the pastors, and most of the doctrine. Glad to find some other Christian nerds.

Hi! I am a Christian nerd! I'm a Southern Baptist Youth Pastor also!

I used to go to church regularly.  Unfortunately, with my current job that's not possible.  I do feel that what you do 6 days a week is more important that what you do 1 day a week.  I really need to get back into things.  I haven't read my bible in quite some time.  I seems to be my "go to book of answers" when I need it but I've never REALLY studied it.  I guess that could be something I pursue over the coming weeks. I've already started my challenge thread, but hey, I could use some spiritual guidance as well.   I'm very picky about the churches I go to.  I was raised attending the Church of the Brethren.  Very old fashioned and as a kid I got board.  Once I was old enough to do my own thing I started going to a nondenominational church which I preferred.  I got more out of the sermons and felt more connected with God.  Unfortunately I have strayed quite a bit in the last few years.

I'm glad to find there are Christian nerds here as well.  Maybe it will help me get back to where I need to be.

I agree that living your faith everyday is more important than just "showing up" on Sunday mornings, though there is something to be said for gathering with other beleivers in communion to worship. But you definitely need to find a place you feel comfortable if you are going to attend church. I grew up Catholic, and stopped going at 16, floated around for a long time, decided I was simply "Christian" without any real denomination, and churches I've attended since have been hit or miss. I currently go to a church that is very open about the fact that we're all human and make mistakes, and that is loving and accepting of those flaws in us. Its also more modern in terms of music and in the overall format, but the content is still very much centered around Christ and the teachings of the Bible. I'm comfortable going, and that makes all the difference those mornings when I'd like to just sleep in.

If you have the time to watch and be engaged in sermons, just not during actual church times, you could try the videos here and see if you like it (this is the channel for my current church, and they post everything). (I won't be offended if you hate the pastor's style :) )

I listened to the first sermon.  I have the page bookmarked so that I can go back to it.  The church I used to attend did something similar but I can't find the link for the sermons now.  I contacted them to see if they still do it.  Thanks for the info.

I agree with you that gathering with others to worship is a good thing but my wife and I have had some less than desirable experiences with some churches in the past.  Lots of hypocrites in most of them.  I'm still keeping my eyes and ears open for a church that catches my attention.  Until then...Joel Osteen and now   Fountain Springs Community Church may be my sources.

You should check out Mark Driscoll, David Platt, John Piper, and Matt Chandler. They are really good preachers and all their sermons are on their websites, just google their names and it'll pop up.

Remember Churches are the best place for hypocrites, without them there wouldn't be any churches. We have all fallen short of the glory of God. Any and all sin is agaist God and the wages for it is death but it is Christ who saves us. After salvation we still stumble and fall on a daily basis because we are still human and have that sin nature. But praise the Lord for His grace, mercy, forgiveness, and His faithfullness in us when we don't have faith in Him. Sorry to write a mini sermon haha But I will be the first to admit that there are better Churches than others! I hope you and your wife find a church that you two can plug into!

A lot of people attend church in an effort to be "good Christians." Keeping up appearances and pretending to lead a perfect, religious life is not what faith in Christ is or means. We're all broken in some way or another, if we weren't we wouldn't need saving... there's no sense in pretending we're perfect and strong on our own or denying that we've failed in the past.
