I like the Babylon 5's rangers motto: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranger_(Babylon_5))

We are Rangers.

We walk in the dark places no others will enter.

We stand on the bridge, and no one may pass.

Just because i stumpled upon the video, i think this shows how great the rangers are in B5

As much as I'm a huge B5 fan (I ran a B5 rpg campaign for almost 5 years), I'm not sold on the B5 Ranger ethos...

I like the Heinlein quote (though, of course, I'm biased as I've had it as part of my signature for ages ;) )

but if that doesn't float your boat, Mark Sisson coined a nice phrase:

"True fitness is more a question of how many push-ups you can stop and do in the middle of a 5k run while carrying a child on your back"

a bit long for a motto? ok then...

The concept of versatility could be shortened to a single word:

Ildánach

which is an Irish word which refers to Lugh the master of many arts (sort of a Sun God and an ancient high king of Ireland known as Sam-ildánach or "skilled in all the arts"). Ildánach could be translated as "versatility".

Do these games also have way more stout than the Olympics?

Can't tell you how many times I've used the insect quote with young Soldiers or, even more so with lieutenants. It does seem to get through.

How about a simple "Yeah, I can do that."?

I was getting ready to turn in for the night and looked to see if anybody else had weighed in with more debate, suggestions or another cool motto when I realized I had completely forgotten to say I really liked the one word option. I've always been partial to Gaelic (I love to listen to my wife's aunt when she counts something- she always reverts to Gaelic) and think Ildánach! would be great. This makes three mottos with which I could be happy, along with We Walk in Dark Places, and Specialization is for Insects.

I'm new here- how does our guild usually settle something like this? I'm sure this ain't the Rangers' first rodeo....

Sorry, I edited my post and removed my reference to the Lughnasadh games thus making your Olympic comment seem odd...

Samunwal isn't crazy, I just shortened my post as I didn't think it was that relevant to the conversation ;)

(for anyone interested, it was a mention of a custom among my local community friends to have an annual Lughnasadh games each august. A tradition that began, allegedly, before the Olympics. Drinking is involved but Stout is eschewed, at least during the games, in favour of home brewed elderflower wine.)

Of all the mottos others suggested i like 'Specialisation is for Insects' most.. It so hilariously in your face about rangers being jack-of-all-trades :butterfly:

Personally, I'm a fan of "Do All The Things" because it embodies what Rangers are all about while still keeping the good natured community aspect that we know and love from NF. Although "Specialization is for insects" is fun, I can see it coming across as elitist and douche-y.

Or how about changing that 'Do all the things' a bit.. remember the TNG's final episode? 'All the good things...'

So how about: 'Do all the good things' :satellite:

"Specialization is for insects" has been passed around these fora and it hasn't had any negative responses that I have seen. We all seem to be a pretty good bunch and understand that it is all in jest.

"Do all the things!" needs no change. How do you know what is good and bad without experience? Part of being a Jack-of-all-trades is sampling everything to understand everything and find the things which are best for you.

I also like "No stone left unturned," but there is no need aspect there. Better would be "No wall left unbombed" or "No loot left undiscovered."

But the debate is really between "Do all the things!" and "Specialization is for insects."

How about combining them: "Specialization is for insect. Do all the things!"

How 'bout we throw a poll up with three choices- Dark Places; Insects; and All Things? These seem to have the most interest throughout this thread, although I have no problem with adding more. Especially if they make me giggle like a school girl.
