Ice may be the past, but it is the present and future too. Last year during the shortened nba season, with many back to back games, guys were sleeping with bags of ice.

I have high blood pressure due to genetic stuff and have been on medication to lower it since I was thirteen. I'd occasionally try to see if my BP could stay within normal levels without the meds, but when it didn't or when the dose I was on did not get my BP to 'normal' levels they did raise the dose. So it is not my experience that BP meds are not to get your BP to normal levels, though they do want you to be on lower doses if possible so your body builds up less of a tolerance for it. And if your BP is on the high end of normal you probably won't get your meds increased. This may depend on your other risk factors though, and what is normal will depend on age and weight and all that other good stuff.

Oh, I've always wondered. Is it legal to split lanes? Some people do that here and it scares the crap out of me in moving traffic. In stand-still traffic, I'm mostly annoyed I don't have a motorcycle. :)

I call these the invisible right-turn only lanes. Apparently it's totally okay to have two cars in the lane so one of them can turn right instead of waiting for the car in front of them to go straight if it's a red light and you can turn right on red. I mean, if it wasn't okay, there wouldn't be room for two cars there, right?

Drivers in my area make me sad. Half of them are college students and are therefore immortal. The number of driving decisions going on around me that make me sad is very high.

We don't have the too-slow driver problem though-- if I don't have people passing me when I'm going the speed limit or even slightly over it I start to worry that I've missed something. And this is on top of having roads which are one lane in each direction where the speed limit is 70. Ah, Texas.

Last night: NO WORKOUT. Nothing. Tried to do a few DUs, but my shins hurt so bad, I gave up. Then a bunch of friends got together for dinner and drinks. I joined them. I drank beer. And ate chips and queso. Not healthy, but after the day I had yesterday, I suppose I could have made worse decisions (I stayed away from the sugary margaritas on special, I only at queso and did't graze other people's food, and I had set a limit of three beers. Which, admittedly is still a decent amount of beer since they're 16 oz, but from 7-10 wasn't a ton, either.) Plus, hanging out with friends and having a few beers keeps me from committing homicide. I know some people get in great shape in prison. But I'm pretty sure I'd just lay around.

Coffee, monitor, etc.

Oh, and there's a girl at my work that's in charge of a lot of the zombie run (it's not a Run For Your Life run, it's something they'e putting together locally). And she forgot I was running it so today she was talking about one part in the race. I guess you go into a barn and it's completely dark except for an occasional strobe light (that's supposed to be like a light bulb flickering). And I guess when you get into the barn and the strobe light goes off, you can see some hay bales. She said you climb ovver them, get to the other side and start to run, and when the light flashes again you'll see a freaking clown zombie. Then you have to run away and over more hay. Sheesh. Clown zombie. Unexpectedly (in a no-zombie zone). She said he can't take your flags (because it's an obstacle), but he'll be there to give you a heart attack.

Would have worked.

Awesome. bring it on!

She said they're also toying with the idea of buying mulligan flags so instead of three lives you can buy 10. She said this almost guarantees you'll make it through the course alive.

Not sure why I'd care as my time will be terrible.

She also said there are two "dead zones" where your'e guaranteed to lose a flag. I guess you have to run through a tallgrass maize and zombies are waiting on the other side. THere's only one way out and the zombies wait there for you.

That's all I got before she said, "Oh, crap. You're doing the race! It's supposed to be a secret." I might have been better off not knowing. :)

OMG this would terrify me. You're doing this for FUN?

Yeah, the ice thing confuses me. I feel like they keep going back and forth on it. I read a couple interesting articles about it (mwod and a response to it) but anywhow, I ice when I feel like icing would help and I don't when I don't. I'm definitely anti meds if I can stand it.

I went to the doctor a few years ago for a yearly physical and he said my blood pressure was high, I kindly pointed out to him the three ring circus/war zone that was his waiting room, he told me to come back next week to take it a second time, again, it was D-Day as interpreted by five-year olds, and once again my blood pressure was high. So they told me to come back the following week and if it was "still" high they were going to put me on medication. So I didn't go back, problem solved. I had been checking it at home every week and it was always running good.

I will try the ice. I read somewhere that icing is "a tactic of the past." But maybe it's not in this case. I honestly can't remember what that was said for, though. Might have been DOMS, which I never ice for. I also haven't taken ibuprofen, so my pain scale just walking is probably a 2. When I start jumping rope, it's up to a 7. Still tolerable, but it's definitely enough of a distraction that doing something new is way too challenging. So I can run with the pain, but trying to focus on the jumps and NOT focus on the pain has proven too much.

But I'll ice tonight. Hell, today if we have any ziplock bags around here.

Thanks for the advice. I also have a heating pad that I'll throw in for good measure. And I'll keep foam rolling, which actually helps a TON with just daily activities like walking and lifting.

Thing of the past? Wow! I've never heard that.. I didn't ice because I was lazy much like foam rolling or stretching haha. I need to do it, but I don't.. I'll get to it. Eventually.

I bought new shoes too, but I thought I was better and missed icing for a week and learned that I was incorrect! And icing was the trick.. you reminded me that I need to just suck it up. I had stopped doing DUs in my last workout routine because well.. I sucked and my shins were hurting. I should just ice! Thanks!! :]

Haha! That sucks! I'm from Kansas, I think our city's around 400K people. So can I say, "Take that times forty?" No, it's not that bad. Mostly it's bad during rush hour when people seem to think it's their job to police speed. So people intentionally get in the passing lane and slow down because "people don't need to be going that fast." Yeah, that's a good plan. ANd that's a for-real thing. Several people I've come across have admitted they do that. Sheesh. Just get over and stop worrying about how fast everyone is going. It's a lot more dangerous to be going 10 over the speed limit and hit someone going 5 under than it is to just keep going 10 over.

Oh, I've always wondered. Is it legal to split lanes? Some people do that here and it scares the crap out of me in moving traffic. In stand-still traffic, I'm mostly annoyed I don't have a motorcycle. :)

Funny small city is 400k, but you know about smaller so I'm not going to talk about small. It's just funny to put things in perspective. Hell when I moved to San Diego everyone kept telling me.. "San Diego isn't a big city." Took me a long time to understand it. Still plenty big for me!!

And.. Splitting lanes is definitely legal in Cali. Some thing about bikes overheating sitting still. Kinda makes sense. I think there are rules and the police can choose what's "dangerous" when doing it. I think half of the people doing it are doing so dangerously fast. Too be honest though San Diego police don't seem to be spending a lot of time with enforcing traffic laws. I've seriously been considering another bike. I hate traffic and it's the one thing making miss being back home in Alabama. Least there I could maneuver around drivers. Or I could slow down.. but I could also start stretching :P

Do you also get the overly courteous drivers? In Rapid City, I'll be like 4-5 seconds from stopping at the 4 way stop where a driver is already stopped, and then they'll wait for me to stop and then a few seconds later, waive me through, like they are doing me a favor. All I can think is, if YOU were just following the rules, you'd already be well out of my way without wasting either of our time. Super annoying, almost more annoying than facing traffic in Los Angeles like I did for years...almost.

YES, but most of the time I think they're just scared. Anymore I just give it a 5 count and go through if they still haven't moved.

So many drivers act like they're afraid of parked cars, driving on the wrong side of the street if there's a car at the curb. Some streets you can blame on being way too narrow, but most of it is the driver. I keep my left tires on the yellow line as often as possible (if there is one) and laugh when the other driver comes to a full stop instead of trying to squeeze between me and a parked car when there is easily 15 feet to work with.

There are times I think I preferred the I-5 parking lot rushes (Seattle area) but then I'm just glad it's not a 2h commute to work anymore.

I'll pretend like the article i read about ice no longer being a good thing is outdated. Because that's all I can think about doing (and will do tonight). I can see maybe not working out directly after icing b/c if you're numb you can get hurt. Of course, I generally feel the same about pain pills. If I need to take ibuprofen to workout, then I need a rest day. I know plenty of people do it, it's just my philosophy.

It depends on the state/city if splitting lanes is legal.

There's probably no law here. Or contradicting laws. it's how we do.

I have high blood pressure due to genetic stuff and have been on medication to lower it since I was thirteen. I'd occasionally try to see if my BP could stay within normal levels without the meds, but when it didn't or when the dose I was on did not get my BP to 'normal' levels they did raise the dose. And if your BP is on the high end of normal you probably won't get your meds increased. This may depend on your other risk factors though, and what is normal will depend on age and weight and all that other good stuff.

I know my BP elevates during stress. My mom told me that when I was in grade and HS when she'd take BPs for nursing school and whatnot. Plus, I have an irregular heartbeat. mom said that can make it hard to get a good read, too. Although I don't think it varies enough for me to be between 105/65 and 140/90 in the same day, where the only real difference is a stressful person/situation.

So, I'm now tracking. And will take the log to my doctor. Who, hopefully soon will be my former doctor. :)

I call these the invisible right-turn only lanes. Apparently it's totally okay to have two cars in the lane so one of them can turn right instead of waiting for the car in front of them to go straight if it's a red light and you can turn right on red. Oh I do do the invisible right turn lane thing on highways with wide shoulders. But I do it also to get out of the way of the traffic behind me. Sometimes it's to get to the light sooner, sometimes it's to get out of the way. If there's room, I'm all for this. The splitting lanes thing I'm talking about is when motorcycles drive through two cars going the same way, essentially driving on the dividing line or whatever. So makign a third lane between two cars. Seems safe in stand-still traffic. But it scares the crap out of me on highways, moving at normal speed.

Coffee, monitor, etc.

OMG this would terrify me. You're doing this for FUN?

Well, for some reason people dressed up as zombies don't scare me. Now if it were a course of dogs chasing me. No. Way. In. Hell. (I have an irrational fear of dogs. Well, animals in general. My friend's pig ruined my morning the other morning. It was terrifying.)

Sweet jesus. Clown zombie? AH! I would not sleep. Actually, I may not sleep now :P

Yeah, the ice thing confuses me. I feel like they keep going back and forth on it. I read a couple interesting articles about it (mwod and a response to it) but anywhow, I ice when I feel like icing would help and I don't when I don't. I'm definitely anti meds if I can stand it.

I dont' like clowns b/c it freaks me out when I can't see someone's face. But a clown zombie isn't really worse than just a normal clown. Or Santa Claus.

I don't know what it is? I like guys with beards. But Santa scares me. I think there's too little open face area or something? Maybe it's the red? ;)

And I'm goign to get back on board with icing. I think it'll feel good. Looked for ziplock bags here. Nada. We used to ahve them for business-related stuff, but with technology and scanners, they're no longer used. Sad face. So waiting til I get home.

Hahah! The dog is the best!

And I agree, no reason to get on meds if your BP is actually normal. I'm not sure why docs don't say, "OK go home and take it and report back and I'll put it in your chart." ?? Those new cuffs they sell are certified to be accurate. And most people also know nurses who can do BP checks. If it's someone they know, people are generally more relaxed. My mom used to do the checks every Sunday morning at church so that people could monitor/track their BP between doc visits. I also know nurses who go to those assisted living places (where there aren't nurses or anythign on duty, just kind of a senior center living area where it's like apartments with someone to help with food, laundry, etc.).

Thing of the past? Wow! I've never heard that.. I didn't ice because I was lazy much like foam rolling or stretching haha. I need to do it, but I don't.. I'll get to it. Eventually.

Yeah, I read the ice thing somewhere. Consider it banished from my brain!!

I know Wichita isn't a SMALL town or anything. Lots of people say it's a "big town" and doesn't really qualify as a city. I can't remember why they say it doesn't qualify as a real city. It has everything I need. And a surplus of idiot drivers. ;) And the town I grew up in had around 700 people when I was younger. Now it's expanded and has around 1300, I think. But the town my dad grew up in has around 200 people. And that's what I LOVE. I'd love to live in a town like that. THe problem is, they have to go a long way to get lots of stuff. But I tell myself, with online shopping now, it wouldn't be too bad.

My dream? Pay off my house and if I can't find a job I really like, I'll move to a small town and get a job doing whatever there. Cut out the big city living and go "in town" only occasionally. I don't know that I care to live alone in the country, but definitely need smaller town living than what I'm doing now. It's not worth being this unhappy. Part of it for sure is the job. But more of it is how rude other unhappy people (probably also due to their jobs) are. It's so impersonal. I hate my HOA. And while my neighborhood is safe and I like my house as a stand-alone thing, I really, really, really don't like the snooty people I live near. And I know most are probably nice people, most peopel are. But damn, so catty. And nosey. And, well, snotty.

YES, but most of the time I think they're just scared. Anymore I just give it a 5 count and go through if they still haven't moved.

I think some people think no one knows how to drive (haha, like me) sothey don't trust htem to do the right thing. The thing with 4-way stops is it's hard to really go wrong. If someone else starts to go when you go, just wait. Otherwise, go.

I'm not really afraid of parked cars, but I AM afraid of children running out from behind a parked car. Even 13 year old kids do that in my neighborhood (on the rare occasion they're outside - it's so strange, I go weeks without seeing kids, then suddenly there they are, running out in front of cars!) run out into the street without looking. And it's definitely easier to see them from teh middle of the street than closer to the cars. THat said, if another car's coming I GTF over.

Week 3 progress

Diet and Fitness Goals:

1. Lift two times per week (squat/bench/DL/bent rows one day, squat/OHP/DL/inverted rows the 2nd), cardio (of whatever variety I choose, just get moving to improve endurance) three times per week. 30 points possible, up to 5 per week. (2 STR, 2 STA)

Lifted once - my stupid back kept giving me fits. I kept thinking it just needed rest, but I think I'm going to have to give up and try the chiropractor. Ugh. I had three sessions of cardio (only get credit for three). So 4/5 for this week. 13/30 so far.

2. Plan and prep meals – Plan the following week’s meals and grocery list by Thursday of the current week. Grocery shop over the weekend. And make the bulk of the week’s food on Sundays. (12 possible points. One for planning by Thursday. One for prepping by Sunday night.) (2 WIS, 2 CHA, 1 CON)

2/2 last week. 5/12 total.

3. Zombie Run – Complete in less than 1 hour. I did the Warrior Dash in 1 hour 8 minutes (no judging). The course isn’t exactly the same, but from what I’ve heard aside from the zombies, it’s very similar. 5K through a field with obstacles (and zombies). Training for this will partially be the cardio in #1, but hopefully a goal finish time will ensure I run more. All or nothing. Sub 1 hour gets points. (Side note, if I ran a 5K on a flat, paved surface, I think I’d finish in about 40 minutes. And this will be a hilly course that’s not paved, with likely lines at obstacles.) (2 DEX, 2 STA)

Did some intervals this week but with the jumping rope, didn't go as hard as I wanted to. If the next two week's challenges interfere with runngin, I'll have to pass on them. Zombie Run is 2 weeks away and I want to be as prepared as I can be.

Life Goal:

Yard – I have two landscaping areas in my backyard I need to take care of before winter. I also want to fertilize my yard two more times before it freezes. The fertilizing is easy as long as I do it. Cleaning up the landscaping area is the time-consuming/grueling work. I know – I did the front yard this weekend. So 25% for fertilizing, and 75% for the landscaping. (2 CHA)

No progress. A little disappointed in myself. Yesterday would have been the perfect day.

Some cleaning in the house. Went to a movie (The Perks of Being a Wallflower, which I liked). Took a nap. Not sure why I was so exhausted this weekend. I think work is wearing me out. I get plenty of sleep at night but by the time i get home from work, I'm mentally exhausted, and weekends seem to be the only time I can catch up on sleep. I read a little. Other than that, I can't think of anything of significance. Just didn't feel like going outside and getting all gross doing yardwork.

I too have a high demand job. Some days are so hard that when I get home my brain hurts just trying to decide wether to have a cup of tea or a glass of water. Its exactly on those days that is really helpful to make a little bit of progress. Pick some "brainless" task and spend a few minutes on it. Yardwork sounds perfect. How about setting a timer and telling yourself you'll do just 5 to 20min? Its OK to work for just a few minutes. If when the timer goes off you feel like doing more then go for it. Otherwise, put your tools away and pat yourself on the back. Then do some more the next day. Contrary to what many people say, its OK to do a big job in many small steps! :D

And get the chiropractor, too! I promise, if he's good at what he does (I think I recall you saying it was a he) you'll feel better. Agreed. My family really frustrated me on Friday. I got home from work and was exhausted, my head hurt, my back hurt, and my shins were pissed because of the jumping rope. So I laid down with ice on my shins and fell asleep. I wake up to chaos. My family has instituted a full on search party because I didnt' answer my phone for two hours. Really?!?! And my mom sent my sister and brother in law to effectively break into my house. Sigh. Seriously? I'm an adult. I am not married to anyone because THIS type of stuff is suffocating to me. I didn't sleep well Saturday night because of it because I kept dreaming people (my family) were coming into my house.

I'm considering changing my garage door code.

Anyway, I think that frustration was what was making me grouchy and not wanting to do much.

There will be more Sundays. Get that yard work done, girl!

My problem with the chiropractor actually isn't fear of anything physical or even white coat-related. It's that my insurance is stupid and a pain in the ass to deal with. I'm considering finding out if he can just charge me per-appointment without going through the insurance. But, then there's the, "You're paying for this crap, you should use it" perspective. It sucks to have a crappy insurance company who tries to get out of paying everything.

But I've called and scheduled an appointment. So I'm going. And I"m already dreading the insurance company fallout.

well, you did some house work, so i think that's good.

I haven't read the book. When I saw the movie trailer I wanted to read the book, but that generally ruins the movie (although I heard the author had creative control over the movie so maybe it wouldn't have). Some of it was fast-paced (as far as dialogue goes), so I really want to read teh book now. I had an audible GASP at one point in the movie. I didn't see it coming. So when I have a moment like that (followed by emotions), it always makes me want to watch the movie again.

When I asked the people I saw the movie with if they thought it was good they sadi, "Well, it had parts that were sad and deep" I guess the only way a movie is good is if it's fake-happy?? I dn't know. I don't get that perspective. I enjoyed the movie because i got into it, enjoyed the characters, and LIKED that it wasn't all unicorns and rainbows. As is life.

I also want to see that movie, btw. I loved that book.

Honestly, I sent my first appt through my insurance company and that worked well but then it worked out that if I did the rest I'd have to pay $60+ per visit. So, they offered me a cash option. So I only pay $35 per visit. Just call and ask. Yes, you're paying for insurance but unless it's more financially feasible/easier you don't have to use it.

I don't get that with people, there are several movies out there that leave me feeling a little disturbed and upset (I'm looking at you dark knight) but they are still fantastic movies. And I've got friends that wouldn't go see the dark knight rises because of the dark knight.

@Laura (or anyone else who knows) Would you recommend a chiropractor over a massage? I've never had either one, but I've thought about doing both since the heavy lifting has begun. Although I don't really like being touched, which stems from a lifetime of people figuring out that I'm ridiculously ticklish, so this may be a moot point anyway.

The path to Swolehalla is paved with a lot of Swolehate, and you won't get there without being Swole of Spirit too.

I agree. I may not watch those movies time and time again but that doesn't mean I don't think they're awesome. Silly people.

As far as Chiro v. Massage:

I think it depends on a few things. 1. Purpose of visit? Is there something in particular bothering you or is it general soreness, achy muscles? 2. Which kind of massage are considering? 3. Can you find an awesome chiropractor?

So, if there is nothing in particular bothering you, I would generally go for massage. Specifically, deep tissue..which is not comfortable. BUT, it's super great for you and since you're really ticklish it's likely the pressure will be enough that it will move way past tickles territory into ohsweetjesuswhy territory.

Now, the matter of the chiropractor: it's really pretty... unregulated (total lack of a better word). Not all of them are awesome so you need to make sure you do your research. If you find a good one, it's great. And it's likely a better option if you're ticklish since there isn't much light touching (more of grabbing your body and cracking the sh*t outta stuff). So, there's not a lot of room for giggles.

I'm not sure how helpful that was.. I guess the tl;dr is deep tissue and/or chiro, depending on if something is bugging ya or not.

Well, I might be paying out of pocket. Icouldn't find my insurance card. Might be a sign!

Oh man, I hate being touched, but could get a massage every single day. Just ask for a firmer touch. I've never had an official deep tissue massage, but tell the massage therapist to go to town. Apparently I have a decent pain tolerance when it comes to massages. I, however, have no such tolerance when I cut myself, stub my toe or get in a bar fight. Just kidding on the third one. I'm drunk, so i don't feel anything. Just kidding again. I've never been in a fight.

I've had a shoulder problem for a long time, but I'm 99.9% sure it's muscle-related. Partially desk-related. And potentially (although no one confirms it) b/c my shoulders are uneven. It's hurt my entire life, but was exacerbated by le desk job. I've even moved my desk. Made it "more ergonomical" (I put that in quotes b/c that actually made it hurt far worse, and I stuck it out for over a year). The only thing that makes it feel better is to get a massage and stay away from work for awhile (b/c of this, I like to get a massage the afternoon of the first day of vacation - whee!).

The chiro does help with tension headaches and neck stuff, though. So I think it will depend on what your injury is, too. Oh and the chiro really helped when I sprained my ankle.

But mostly, when I win the lottery, I'm going to be getting rubbed on the daily. Of course, at that point I'll have quit my job and I won't have muscle tension from stress. But, you know, for old time's sake.

I'm going to ask my massage therapist about a deep tissue massage. And get one. Immediately. Well, not immedaitely. I'm at work. And then have to go to the dentist. Bleh.

I also have that high tolerance. My chiro does that thing where they stick electro things on the part that hurts and then you choose what level you want. It goes to 10. I got a 9. They thought I didn't understand. I told them that 8 was ok, but before that I barely felt it. Now that iv'e gone a bunch of times I can get it lower if I do that.

The first few times at the chiro, I giggled. Not because it tickled but because it was so weird to ahve someone up in my business. I am not a toucher. Nooo touchy.

Ha! Go for it, Kelly! My guess is, if your shoulders are uneven, there's more going on with your bones than you realize. (I sound like such salesperson hahah I promise it's just good stuff!)

My doc's never offered the elctro stuff. But I did tell him, "I'm not really interested in anything like that." Maybe that would fix me? I don't know. Just weirds me out to send electricity into my body if I haven't committed capital murder. You know, unless I'm in Texas, where they'll kill you for forgetting to return a library book. TEXAS FOREVER!

He adjusted me. Said my pelvis was all out of whack (he says that every time). Then he asked me if i wanted to go on the roller massage table (not sure if that is the right link). Hell yes! I'm not sure how much this costs or if it costs extra to get on said table (again, I never know what's happenign with my insurance). But I could lay on this table all day. I wish I had one of my own. For $1500 I guess I could!
