Raidne's Adventure Begins

Raidne

The dim, yellowed glow of the streetlamps have a hard time reaching the dark corners of alleys. I’d believe that’s why alleyways are a beacon of mischief and miscreants. The darkness of the shadows provides protection from curious eyes. A stolen moment of lust between two lovers. A criminal act hidden from a scrutiny's eye. Or, where hopefully no one notices you as you try to find a moment of rest in a city that never sleeps, once you get past the smell at least. Here I sit, in the shadow of a faded green dumpster, my knees pulled in tight to my chest and my head rests on my knees. The thinness of my worn down black hoodie and threadbare jeans are barely keeping me warm. I need new shoes soon as the soles of these are almost nonexistent. I like these shoes though. Chuck Taylors. They remind me of, well, before.

Today has been a good day. Well, that would depend on your perspective. A good day for me would be a day in hell for most. A good day is a day I get to eat. A good day is a day it doesn't rain. A good day is one that no one’s tried to take my shoes while I slept, or pummeled me into unconsciousness while I sleep in order to freely rifle through my already empty pockets. Yeah, today’s been good. Maybe tomorrow will be great. I get a shower on great days.

“Hey, lady...” I hear the voice of a boy trying too hard to be a man. Wolf-whistles and cat-calls follow from his compatriots. I heave a heavy breath. I know what’s coming. They’re going to break her spirit. They’re going to scare her within an inch of her life. They’re going to steal her possessions. They’re going to make her regret ever walking alone in the dark.

“Yo, bitch, I’m talking to you,” he repeats. His voice is annoyed now. I haven’t lifted my head from my knees. I haven’t opened my eyes. I try to pretend I don’t hear them. I’m sure the right thing to do is to speak up - to save her from the demons around her - but I don’t have the energy. And, it’s been a good day. Speaking up would most definitely end my good day.

“Back away, young one. Interject your delinquency, elsewhere, but you do not wish to open up a door you cannot close,” the woman speaks. Her voice is calm, almost soothing. I am surprised at how she is speaking to the thugs that are descending on her like vultures.

“She must be senile,” I think to myself.

“Are you loco?” he quips. “You wandered into the wrong part of town - this is my hood and you’re obviously a long way from home,” he chides her.

“Obviously,” she responds.

I hear the sound of metal on metal, the gentle clicking of the hammer of a gun. I don’t know why my hearing has always been keen, but it has. I often pick out noises most others never notice. With this, I slowly start to rise to my feet. I may not interject myself into the situation, but I know I have to help her...after.

“You’d better empty that bag there lady. Nice and slow.”

She begins to laugh. It’s a curious laugh, almost a cackle. She seems utterly amused.

“Oh, dear boy, you know not what you ask. I have nothing you desire. Now be a good lad, and run along and reattach your dirty mouth to your mother’s teat, before you get hurt.”

I shake my head gently,. Why would she antagonize them? I can feel the anger coming off the leader from my hiding spot. His intent is shifting. He no longer means to rob her - he now intends to end her right there, right now. Against my better judgment, I step out of the shadow.

“Back the hell off,” I snipe at him. He turns to me with a sinister grin. I know that look - a look of uncontrolled desire - a need. He has found the same fix from pain and torture that he gets from the chemicals coursing through his veins. I have turned his attention away from the woman but now I must remove myself from this situation, quickly.

The group of five begin to move toward me. I slip back into the shadows and begin to move stealthily down the dark alley. “Not one of your better ideas Raidne,” I think to myself. I dart from shadow to shadow, hoping to find an opening to escape through. I can feel my heart rate quicken as my options diminish. Finally, a brick wall surrounds me on three sides. There are no open windows. No open doorways. No fire escapes to scale. There is no escape. There is only darkness.

In the darkness, I feel like I am falling. Hurtling towards a bottom that I never hit. There is no light. It is only utter and complete darkness. Soon my fall slows, I feel a warming sensation move throughout my body. There is a intense pain in my ribs, but it seems to be subsiding. I can tell my face is cut and swollen. Yet, I can feel the swelling of my face begin to reduce. My face tingles as it almost feels like my cuts are weaving themselves back together. Slowly, I blink my eyes open. The woman from the street is standing over me.

“Often one finds a hero in the least likely of places. “

I groaned gently, pushing myself up with my elbows. “Are you okay?”

She chuckles, “And a selfless one to boot. You needn't have been worried about me, child. I am more than capable of handling a few miscreants with superiority issues. They were a simple necessity to draw you out, yet they will harm no others again.”

Her response stirs anger inside me, “A thank you would be more than sufficient.”

I start to stand, but she places her hand on my shoulder and presses me back to the ground. I glare at her, trying to shrug her hand off my shoulder.

“Rest child. All will reveal itself soon enough.”

“Are you kidding me? There is no time for us to rest. We have to find somewhere safer to be. Those thugs will come back, probably with their friends, and neither of us should be here when they do. You shouldn't even be out here alone in the first place.”

She smiles wickedly at me, raising her hand to gently push her snow white hair away from her brow. She cackles softly. “Oh my dear child, Rest. I will explain everything in the morn. Rest now. “ she whispers.

“No, dammit. I can’t stay here. You can, if you are that crazy, but I have no intention of being anywhere near this place when those thugs come back to find me.” I stand again and unsteadily begin walking down the alleyway.

“I should have my head examined. I was stupid to try to help anyway and now she wants me to hang out here until they come back.” I mumble to myself, looking for my bag which I abandoned to play hero.

“Raidne, you really should rest. You are safe as long as I am here,” she speaks

I whip around quickly, “How...How do you know my name?”

She walks slowly to me, putting both hands on my shoulders. I feel a heaviness envelope me like a blanket. Suddenly, I can barely keep my eyes open. I feel myself hurtling back into the darkness. I hear her whispering me as the darkness closes around me.

“Do not worry, Raidne,” she whispers, “I will take care of everything.”

Goal 1: Drink three liters of water per day, every day [+2 CON, +2 CHA]

The true goal is here to eliminate soda consumption. By replacing soda with water, I will not need soda to 'quench my thirst.' Other positives is that water will help alleviate some systemic inflammation, clear up my skin, restore my hair from its current straw-like condition.

Goal 2: Complete all scheduled strength training workouts [+4 STR]

I pay a good amount of money for my trainer. She provides me with a diet and fitness regiment, which I have completely blown off for the last month. Failure to complete this goal will result in the loss of a party member.

Goal 3: Complete each scheduled running workout [+2 DEX, +3 STA]

I have a coach for running also. He's stopped sending me updates because I wasn't doing the program. I need to get a program together and start posting my runs on Training Peaks again, so he can see I'm putting forth the effort to improve. Completion of this goal will result in the addition of a party member.

Goal 4: Get personal finance software set up and up-to-date [+2 WIS]

Great adventures take funding. Unfortunately, I don't have a clue where my money goes. I'm assuming hair products for my straw-like hair, facial cream to fight the war on my face, and restaurants - which just add to my every expanding pants.

Hooray to another Georgian on the boards. These goals are pretty kick-ass. Soda is a huge obstacle for a lot of people. But many have beaten it, and you can, too. Check out the "Stop Smoking" link in my sig*. Create something similar for soda. You can do this, just gotta have some party members to help you along.

*I can't take full credit for the stop smoking timer. I stole the idea (and site) out of WickedPixie's sig.

PS Saw you signed up on the New Member doc, so I signed on as a mentor. When you have struggles, successes, or whatever, shoot me a PM or email. Now, let's rock this out!

The veil of my dream is slowing dissipating. I take a deep breath in, as I prepare to wake myself. The vile stench of rotten food and rodent carcasses that permeated the alleyway is gone. The air is fresh, clean. Blinking, I open my eyes to find strange new surroundings. Above me, the ceiling is some sort of woven plant. The walls appear mud-like. I reach out tentatively with my hand. They are cool to the touch.

Swinging around, I put my feet onto to the floor. It’s also cool to my bare feet and I glance down to see that it’s stone and dirt. I tentatively reach up to touch the back of my head, where I remember bumping it on the asphalt as those thugs threw me to the ground after grabbing my pony tail. The spot is tender, but not nearly as sore as I would anticipated.

“Oh, good, you are awake. “ It is the woman from the street. “You must be hungry. Alas, I am afraid I am not much of a cook, but I did manage to whip you up a little something.”

“Thank you…” I say, taking the outstretched bowl from her and digging in. It’s some sort of porridge concoction. “Where am I?” I say after several spoonfuls.

The woman laughs again. “Where is not the important question, Raidne?”

“How do you know my name?”

“I have watched you for a very long time. Finally, your time has arrived and here you are.”

I’m suddenly very nervous.

Thanks for the tip about the countdown timer! I've set a goal to be off the 'sauce' by January 1 - and considering my current (obscene) consumption levels - that's a huge cut back in a short time. I think the focus on water consumption will help, though.

Yep, I'm a Georgia girl - born and raised. Originally from near Savannah, I've been in Atlanta since I graduated from Georgia.

Thanks for signing up to be my mentor!

I have a water goal too!!! Good luck on your goals!!!

Water goals are hard. I had a coach tell me once that drinking water is not hard - you just open your mouth and swallow. If only I could wrap my head around it really being that easy!

Challenge Update:

Since I jumped head first into this challenge yesterday, I didn't really have any prep time and I was worried I'd stumble off the starting block. I didn't.

Goal 1 Progress:

Water Intake: 3 liters. Soda Intake: 40 ounces, I think.

Goal 2 Progress:

I usually workout before dawn, but failed to yesterday. That means that getting the workout in took a lot more effort. I generally do my workouts at the gym, but do have a pretty well built out gym in my garage. I managed to drag myself out to the garage last night. I had a couple of cable exercises on my plan for last night, but my pulley system was acting wonky (will get it looked at this weekend,) so I had to sub out for a couple of exercises.

Goal 3 Progress:

Found a 15K training program that will line up with the race I'm planning in January with friends. No runs scheduled until Wednesday, Nov 14, which is okay. I have been invited to come out to a training group on next Tuesday. I miss running with a group, so this may be a possibility.

Goal 4 Progress:

No progress made yesterday. I have the new software downloaded and want to start the bank account with the close of the last statement. The statement should have closed yesterday, but with that being a bank holiday, it may be delayed.

Alright. Looks like you jumped in head first and did all the things. Digging the improvisation for the messed up equipment. I'm all about improv work out equipment. I have jugs of sand, bags of concrete, and PVC pipes full of water for my home days.

For your water goal, do you have a bottle? If not, hop over to REI (so jealous you have one right there) and pick up a Nalgene 1L wide mouth bottle. They are great for crushing liters at a time. I keep one on my desk at work, one in my gym locker, and one at home. I even have a dedicated one for home made smoothies and protein powder mix. They are near indestructible (I've driven over mine in a Jeep before) and BPA-free.

You are off to a great start. Keep it up.

Huge Dawgs fan. Wanted to go to UGA, but they wanted me to be in Redcoats to get my music scholarship, and I hate marching band. Ended up at Valdosta State, where I got to study with an awesome trombone teacher. Still in Valdosta now, working at my Alma Mater.

I actually have a glass water bottle, which I love. One of the things I struggle with with plastic bottles is the taste the water has - I really prefer to drink out of an actual glass, so this has been a good fit. It's a matter of 1) Soda is free at work (with 6 choices) and it's glaring you in the face. It's a habit I just break and 2) my husband and I tend to share a glass at home (don't ask, it's weird) - and he defaults to soda. So, I'm just drinking without even realizing.

GEORGIANS FTW

good luck on the soda/water. you can do it!

Thanks! It's going to be a work in progress for sure!

It looks like you set some excellent goals. Good luck!

on a side note I love the avatar.. I use to use it on a video game sig I had when I played Darkfall..

Thanks! I don't think I ever played Darkfall.

I thought about being a Redcoat, but decided I was really over the marching band after high school. I'd spent most of my life with hours of music lessons, rehearsals and the like and just wanted to take a break. I miss playing though.

Great goals! an excellent start, keep on going!

If you have a bottle you like, then you are good. Several people have struggled with the soda thing because they were buying bottled water, and it is right next to the sodas in a cooler. Or just not having a vessel.

My degrees are in music performance, so going to college without a music scholarship was not an option.

“What do you mean, you’ve watched me for a very long time?” my voice shaking in unison with my nerves.

“Well, when we sent you to the Terra Firma Realm, we had to make sure you were safe. Without your attributions, you were powerless against any threats. When your parents were eliminated, how to keep you safe became more precarious.”

“Safe?” I asked, as more of a shout. A switch has flipped from nervous to angry, “How was I safe? I’ve slept in alleyways and behind dumpsters! I’ve been beaten, robbed, and terrorized for years! I’ve been alone, cold, hungry, wet, you name it! If you were watching me, why in the hell would you let me live like that!? If you knew my parents were murdered, why didn’t you help me then!” my anger continued to grow. A pressure building in my chest, threatening to either implode me or explode me - I was not sure which. I bury my head in my hands, trying to stop the barrage of memories that are assaulting my psyche.

Suddenly, I begin feeling calmer. I raise my head slightly to see that the tips of the woman’s fingers are emitting a soft blue light. As the light left her fingers, it seemed to seek me out, calming my raging emotions. The pressure in my chest subsiding.

“How...How did you do that?” I ask softly.

My brain knows I should be running as far and as quickly as possible. But, my heart is telling me, this woman holds some answers to questions buried deep in my soul.

Sorry to threadjack, but same here. Euphonium (go low brass!)

I was trumpet for 2 years, mallet percussion for 1 year, and french horn for 1 year in high school. My true love is piano, though.

The soda is free at work, but they just installed a very cool filtered water dispenser - which is definitely helping. If I just get over the love of the tingly feeling in the back of my throat when the fizz hits it - mmmm, there's my real crutch for soda.

Challenge Update:

I spent a good amount of time corresponding with strength and nutrition coach yesterday. My bi-weekly progress report was submitted on Monday, and she had feedback. Lots of feedback. Biggest area of concern is me not providing a lot of information in my report. For example, I'm allowed one cheat meal (or two 'smaller' cheats) each week. I generally save that cheat for Friday night out with family. I've just been logging 'cheat' and that's it. She wants to know what I'm eating and get a ballpark of measurement. It stops feeling like a cheat if I'm still measuring, to be honest, and I'm struggling with this. Of course, I promised her I would trust her and the program.

Goal 1 Progress:

Water Intake: 3 liters. Soda Intake: 48 ounces.

Note: At 3:00, I realized I hadn't had any pure water. So, I managed to drink 3 liters before 8pm. And was up several times during the night paying for that decision. I must be better about starting the water earlier in the day (conscious thoughts.)

Goal 2 Progress:

Body Weight Circuits.

20 minute AMRAP, Prescribed Reps for Each Exercise, 60 second rest between rounds

Almost 3 complete rounds

Goal 3 Progress:

Emailed with Running Coach's wife (she's one of my besties) - He will resume reviewing my workouts as soon as I start logging in Training Peaks again. My first run of new training plan will be tonight. So, I'm going to email him a copy of the schedule - he will start reviewing again - and then he will tweak the program as needed. I must show him consistency to continue to get his help.

Goal 4 Progress:

No progress made yesterday. Statements still haven't posted. Stupid holiday weeks. (But, not stupid holiday, since I'm married to a veteran and all!)

I believe your coach wants to see the breakdown of your cheat more so that YOU can see it. See exactly how your cheats compare to your good meals. That way, you can start figuring out how to cheat without really cheating. For instance, my cheat used to involve that really good bread at Outback Steakhouse. Like 2 loaves of it. Even for a cheat, that is huge. After measuring it out and realizing I was eating enough bread for 4 tables, now I might have a slice of the bread before I dig into my big juicy steak.

Looking good with your goals. Keep checking on the bank. It is easy to let their slowness become your failure, so make it a priority to stay on top of it.

I like to add some sparkling water to my glass every once in a while, and a couple drops of fresh lemon juice, sometimes a pinch of salt, makes for a small but good consolation prize.

For that, I have a ritual, whatever I am drinking (in my case coffee or tea), I don't serve it until I drink a full glass of water, and then, I can have it.

I take a seat at the small round table sitting near the fire. She has moved to tend the fire and has her back to me. She is quiet while she stokes the embers, patiently waiting for them to begin a slow burn of the logs that she has added.

“Stephan and Catherine were very good friends of mine, you know?” she asks, quietly.

My heart aches at the mention of my parents. “Really?”

“Well, I knew them as Stephanas and Catarena, but yes. We grew up together on the Blue Plains. Oh, they knew from a very young age that they were soul mates, but they were both like siblings to me. I knew early they were destined for greatness. When they were chosen to go with you, as your guardians and protectors... I don’t remember them ever being so happy.

They were not approved to have a child of their own, so they knew this was their opportunity to experience the joys of parenthood. I remember when we first met you, with your eyes like sapphires and silky black hair. You must have been only a few weeks old when The Elders realized you must be sent to another realm to protect you - so you would have a chance to grow and one day return to us.”

I am remaining quiet. I listen to her talk about things that I don’t comprehend. Raising questions about who I am, where I’m from, and most importantly, why am I here.

Yep, that's what she says. She says she needs to make sure I'm not going 100% off the rails with cheats. We've already had discussions on what a cheat is - so I think she probably wants to know I'm not going with "my cheat' versus "her cheat."

Challenge Update:

Yesterday was tough. Sometimes, I wish I was independently wealthy and didn't have to work. Not that I don't mind working - it's just sometimes the bullarkey that is the "political" side of my job is just too much. Yesterday was one of those days.

Goal 1 Progress:

Water Intake: 2.5 liters. Soda Intake: 60 ounces.

I was so close -- too much soda. I'd planned to finish up the 3 liters at home, but had technological meltdown at home and just fought with that too long. By the time I went "Crap, I need to drink water" - it was pretty close to bed time. I'll get there today.

Goal 2 Progress:

Weight Training.

Tough. Done.

Corner Rows. DB Presses. Close Grip Lat Pulldowns. Standing Military Presses. High-to-Low Woodchoppers. Ab work.

Goal 3 Progress:

2 miles of Zone 2 "Run" - Lots of walking, really, since my HR decided Z3 was the place to be. Garmin died. It was 6 years old. I will need a new one now. I did not get to upload data to Training Peaks before the Garmin bit the dust. I logged my run there as best as I could remember, but it's incomplete data and I'm not sure what the coach will be able to do with it.

Goal 4 Progress:

Statements posted overnight last night, so I will get started on this tonight!

Good progress, keep up with the effort, you are doing great!

If you are considering a new Garmin, have you checked Timex Ironman Global Trainer, for the characteristics and price, is the one on my wishlist for Christmas!!

Keep on crushing that water. Don't let the soda devil work its evil little fingers back in! Good job on your workout and run. I would sell you my Garmin, but I sold it like 2 weeks ago, as I don't really distance run anymore. My GymBoss is more than adequate for any running (read sprinting) that I do now.

Hey, I was reading your topic right now.

How the things are going? If it's not how you would like, remember we got 6 weeks to reach our goals, and it's normally a pretty hard and long way. But don't give up. results will show up and you'll see that the hard work paid off.
