Grass Fed Beef in the UK

I don't think I've ever seen grass-fed beef in any UK supermarket (but it wasn't the most thorough search ever).

Well, since I've only got a week left, I might leave it to the grass/cereal fed beef, but I will give these things a try next time I visit for an extended amount of time. Thanks for the heads up. Kind of disappointing that they don't have easily accessible grass-fed beef here. Especially since the grass is so nutritious here.

I think I pointed it out in another thread but you really don't have the negative health/welfare issues surrounding beef production in the US here in the UK.  British Beef is generally reeared on grass with minimal grain supplmentation during winter.

Rebel - you mean there are places who do intensive rearing of BEEF? That's weird and unholy.


The rolling hills round here are some of the lushest, tastiest pasture and Devon Ruby is a breed that's just divine in its tasty death.  


Though to be honest, most of Britain is good for cattle - and the bits that aren't are good for lamb.  Buy from a local butcher and you won't be sad; supermarket beef is pretty bland here.

Yes there are, Which is why grass finished is such a big deal over here. Even lambs are put in feedlots and fed lots of grain most of the time.

Overall I agree with the previous poster that uk meat is more likely to be grass fed (at least partially) than in the US. Most winter feeds are silage (grass-based feed). But increasingly US methods are starting to appear more and more. You also have to be careful with supermarkets as meat labelled as UK produced isn't always. Animals can be imported and then slaughtered in the uk under labelling laws. Best to check for the red tractor symbol for true UK raised animals. It is best (and often cheaper) to find a small indpendant butcher or farm shop in your local area and ask questions about their meat and how the animals were fed. They will also carry cheaper/more traditional cuts and offal that the big supermarkets don't. Sadly though they are few and far between thank to the big supermarkets.

I can personally recommend http://www.devonrose.com/. I've been getting their free-from family box for a few weeks now and it's top quality meat, far far better than the supermarkets and much fresher too.
