But, since I am merely mortal, I have managed to hold on and make some changes but not others.  Still, I've lost 2 pounds and did not fall apart entirely during major stress periods.  That's a big win.  To put it in perspective, since I started grad school 10 years ago, I have gained more than 40 pounds.  One doctor over this time period just suggested I should aim to stop gaining weight and not worry about losing it - that would be a win.  So, to reverse the trend and start DOWN was a success.  I'm going to keep working that and accelerate the new trend healthily!!

I wouldn't get focused on accelerating the weight loss. Just keep doing what you've been doing and it'll come off. You didn't gain all it once, you ain't gonna lose it all at once, and trying to hurry it up could be a good way (by which of course i mean "bad") to get frustrated. But the fact that you ARE losing is freakin' awesome!

Food porn alert - a cupcake with BACON!  My favorite coffee shop came up with these this week - buttermilk cupcake, maple frosting, and sugared bacon on top.  I did not have this for breakfast - it was tonight's dessert.

Unfortunately, we're having a January thaw .... Princess Leia's clothes are really going to be soaked through, but I'm loving it.  Everyone around me complains about the cold.  Me, I go for walks in a light jacket and sigh at the spring-like weather.

Tuesday & Wednesday January 8th and 9th

Long run each week - not yet

One speed run each week - did intervals up to 3.9 mph and then decided the last one was too slow .... speed up to 4.1 for about 5 minutes.  Felt really, really good.

Other cardio 4 times per week - Did elliptical yesterday and ran on the treadmill today.

Angry Birds 3 x week - nada.

Personal Trainer - need to email the trainer again.  I saw him working with some other folks tonight - so he's back and busy.  I just need to get this done.

Paleo/primal breakfasts each day - the sorta primal greek yogurt with fruit is going well.  So, I think I'm going to work at adding paleo snacks again.

Nice work so far! And I must chime in with much love for the cupcake. I'm loving your primal breakfast yogurt; I'm going to start trying something similar myself. I think my body is trying to tell me I need more healthy gut flora

Like Gatorade, if I want to eat yogurt, I seem to need to eat yogurt.  I went completely off track and ate a lot of breads and pastas while at my husband's house for Christmas break .... and I didn't feel good when I got home.  The yogurt is helping a lot.

I may never be completely Paleo/Primal in my diet, but restricting grains makes me much healthier.

Spousal unit grooves his greek yogurt every day.  I love the stuff too but do better without it (boo!).  Good for you - it's a great source of protein.

And good for you for keeping on with the cardio!  It all adds up!

And enjoy that northern "spring"!  light jackets in the "winter" are the best!!

Yeah I had just one little healthy oats bar yesterday and I haven't had grain consistently for a few weeks now--I felt super sick :( I wonder why that happens?

Well, according to Paleo folks, it's because we have not evolved to handle grains yet - it's only been 10,000 - 12,000 years since the advent of agriculture and the beginning of modifying fruits, vegetables, and grains - especially grains.  Corn was once a grass, believe it or not.  Listening to some of the books on modern agri-business is very, very eye opening.  Unfortunately, those also underscore not only how much we've modified grasses into edible grains, but also how much damage we've done to things that are on the Paleo/primal diet .... like modified tomatoes and grain-fed (and antibiotic-laced) meats.  I'm still thinking about how to lessen the impact of modified foods on my diet by using CSAs and food co-ops.

Challenge-wise, it's been a slow start for me.  I had agreed to go to a conference .... which took out a couple of days this week.  And I have been moving my stuff from the room I rented to the new house.  I have actually stayed there a few nights - which means I can make my own eggs and BACON for breakfast.  It helped me avoid bad continental breakfasts at the conference.

I have definitely gotten some workouts in ..... lifting things and going up and down stairs during the move ..... but that doesn't mean I've done the workouts that I'd planned.  Today's weather is really good; so I'm going to get a long jog in while I explore the neighborhood.

I hear that! Dairy isn't really a problem for me, but I definitely feel much better when grains are restricted.

Like Seabright and others have said, you're doing what you can with what you've got right now. Big props for avoiding the crappy continental breakfast at the conference! I know it's not as easy as it sounds!!!

I'm sure you'll be able to pick up the pace on your challenges. Still plenty of time left for that. Life sometimes gets in the way.

As long as you can do the first step, you are also able to do the rest of them. And nice weather is always a plus!

How'd the jog of exploration go, Princess? Glad to hear you're getting to have BACON again!

Hey, Dude!!  The jog was shiny - loads of new sidewalks and some gentle hills and a playground.  I'm scoping that playground out for BW training opportunities!!  We had a couple of really nice days.  In fact, ALL of our snow disappeared one warm, windy night.  I woke up and was shocked to see brown and green everywhere.  Naturally, that didn't hang around long in the Midwest.  Freezing rain and then snow made me take things slowly this morning - WALKED carefully.  No jogging outdoors.  I'm still considering something on the treadmill and downloading music to motivate me.

This is an excellent area for running - good sidewalks, careful drivers (usually), and nature trails. And stores that stock BACON and make bacon covered cupcakes.  The Sweet Spot had a new platter full again this morning.  Evil people, evil, I tell you.  But they do sell good coffee.

Well, other than the fact that I'm missing my family big time, this is pretty close to heaven.  Don't let any Minnesotans know I said that.

Long run each week - yeap

One speed run each week - nada

Cardio 6 times per week - 2 out of 6, although I walk a lot during the week.  Might be worth getting a pedometer or FitBit

Angry Birds 3 x week - yeap

Personal Trainer - Hum .....

Paleo/primal breakfasts each day -  been doing great with this -- 100%!

My current challenge in the challenge is that I have no internet at the new house .... so I'm touching base when I can stop at a coffee shop or at (no, I didn't say this) work.  Bear with me - I will catch up on the progress of the Rangers soon!

Oooo, a playground! Cool! For running there in Hoth, I have a suspicion that in winter you're gonna need access to a treadmill, as you've already mentioned. Don't care for 'em myself, but they do seve a useful purpose when you can't run outside and I have been known to log a few miles on one.

I used to walk a lot at work (former job) and got in the recommended 10,000 steps during the day.  That was an era in which it was easy to maintain my weight, and I generally felt great.

Today, we closed on the new house!!  And I now have cable TV and INTERNET!!!!!!  Will do better about updating from now on.
