Prologue and Exposition

Though he had attempted to talk himself out of it several times, the thin figure finally steeled his nerves and approached the small wooden door. The sign that hung above the door read, "The Toad and Toddy," and was barely legible in the darkness. With conviction the silhouette raised a small, pale hand to knock on the door, but jumped back with a stifled scream when an arrow sprouted in the wood. After wheeling around and finding no assailant, he plucked out the arrow with shaking fingers and removed a piece of parchment impaled on the shaft. It read: "We know of you. Though you have found us, you are not ready to join our ranks. Seek us out when you are more able. Do not come again as you are, or you will be swiftly removed."

It was signed simply, "The Guild."

With a nod and a nervous laugh the figure turned and ran into the night with a new determination.

Well here goes my first challenge. I figured I'd hang with the assassins because I'm focusing body-weight exercises and eventually want to get into climbing and parkour. Hope you don't mind having a newbie around. :) So without further ado...

Starting info/stats:

Name: Aisis
Race: Wood Elf
Class: Assassin
Lvl: 1
Starting stats:  STR:2   DEX:3   STA:3   CON:2   WIS:3   CHA:2
Weight: 140 lbs
Height: 5'11''

Goal 1: Improve eating habits (+2 CON)

For this goal I'm going to have to start cooking more often. I need to find ways to make eating healthy easier. Breakfast is definitely where it's easiest for me to grab some sugary cereal over making real food, so the parts of this goal are:

  • eat a paleo breakfast every day
  • limit sugar intake (no sugary drinks, sweets)

Goal 2: Strength (+2 STR)

I need to get stronger. Period. The squats are especially important because improving leg strength should help solve the knee problem which I've used as an excuse to be inactive for so long. For the curious, it's called patellar tracking disorder, which means my kneecap doesn't stay where it's supposed to and grinds against other bones when I move certain ways. It's caused by weakness of certain muscles or tightness or looseness in muscles and tendons affecting the knee. This goal consists of:

  • Be able to complete 30 pushups
  • Be able to complete 30 body weight squats
  • Be able to complete 8 pullups

The plan: Mon, Wed, and Fri are designated workout days. Pushups, pullups and squats will be the main movements, but I also want to experiment with lunges and some other leg-oriented exercises.

Goal 3: Flexibility and Skill (+2 DEX, +2 STA)

Again, I just need to become more flexible. It will be the other half of solving the knee problem. Also, need to continue working on my handstand.

  • Stretch at least 3 times a week with focus on improving knee stability
  • Work on handstand progression (+1 bonus point to STA if can hold freestanding handstand for 15 seconds)

Plan: All non-workout days can be stretch/skill days. I'm focusing on the hollow body hold, so I don't think working on the handstand progression will be too fatiguing even if I'm sore after a workout day.

Life Goal: Wisdom (+2 WIS)

This one really isn't too complicated. I just need to do all my homework.

  • Maintain an A average across all classes

I realize I haven't used all 15 of the available points, but I don't want to give more points than I think are deserved to a goal. I'll leave the other four points open to any spontaneous achievements or goals that I may find worthy, if that's allowed. Anyways, feel free to comment or criticize and I look forward to completing this challenge with you all! :)

Welcome to the assassins, Aisis! Nice goals - and achievable. I think breakfast may actually be one of the easier meals to do Paleo, just because eggs and bacon are already pretty standard.

For the strength goal, how many pullups/pushups/squats can you do right now?

Thanks for the welcome! I think I generally skimp on breakfast because I'm lazy in the morning and don't have a ton of time before heading out the door. I'm probably going to start waking up a bit earlier to fix that.

Pushups I can hit 20-25, but my form really suffers in the last reps, so I want to make sure my form is good for a full 30. For pullups I can do 5, but my pullups have progressed really slowly, so I think 8 is a reasonable goal (although I would love to surpass it). And squats are at around 20 as well, but think I'll be able to well surpass my goal of thirty by challenge end.

Yeah, breakfast does suffer from the not-enough-time flaw. Do you like hardboiled eggs? They're easy to do in batches beforehand and then grab on your way out.

It looks like you've thought through your goals really well - every once in a while someone sets a goal of 8 pullups without being able to do 1, and it's tough to realize that six weeks just isn't long enough for most people to achieve that. I'm looking forward to watching you defeat yours!

Hardboiled eggs are a fantastic idea; I can't believe I didn't think of that earlier.

Yeah, I tried to make sure all of the goals were achievable. My only fear is that they might end up being too easy, but we shall see. Thanks for the help, and good luck with your own challenge! :)

I would say day one of the challenge went well. Found out that if you soft boil eggs and then microwve for thirty seconds or so they come out with perfect liquid gold yolks. Went through my routine yesterday too, so a little bit sore today. It is yet to be determined whether or not I'm going to stretch today; for some reason I felt completely exhauseted after I got home, and now I'm struggling to stay awake so I can sleep tonight. Hopefully I'll wake up enough soon. Oh, and I also joined the 100 burpee challenge that was mentioned on the general chat thread. I think it's going to end up kicking my butt, but I think the extra leg workout will be worth it. Hope everyone elses ime to go make some tea and get to work stretching. Yay caffeine! Hope everyone's challenges got off to a good start! :)

I think your idea of adding some lunges will really help as those use different muscles than squats. For squats, I've found that I progress best when I do a few many times throughout the day. I like to bust out 10 body weight squats 5 or 6 times a day with a day of all out "how many can I do?" once a week. That worked for push-ups and pull-ups as well.

I liked your story intro. Can't wait to see how it turns out.

I think I'm going to experiment with lunges next week. I'm slightly leary of them, only because they were the exercise that hurt my knees the most when I used to do them. But now that squats are painless, I think they'll be okay. And I like the idea of doing only a few hard reps at a time and then checking what my max is at the end of each week, I think I might implement that. Thanks for the suggestion! :)

Haha, thanks. I'm no writer, so I'm pretty sure this rpg stuff will get pretty painful to read as it progresses, but hey, it's fun for me to write at least. :P

Glad to be helpful... Sometimes something valuable gets out of my head...

Lunges are good - just like squats, if you're worried about knee issues, make sure your knee is tracking over the middle of your foot, and doesn't go out past your toes.

Thus far I have to say I'm pretty happy with my challenge. Worked on flexibility and hollow body Tuesday and Thursday, worked out monday and wednesday and ate paleo breakfasts every day, excepting today. Unfortunately I didn't wake up in time to cook, which means I work on going to bed earlier so I can get up earlier consistently. And I'm jumping in on Nuala's sub-challenge this week for fun. I could definitely use some running, especially since I might be joining a mud-run in the spring. Right now though I need to go work pullups, since I've only been doing pushups and rows becuase of the rain. Planning on doing lots of negatives. Oh, and I also did a mountain of homework that should raise my two b's up to a's, so I'm pretty happy with that too. Good week overall. :)

Stretched a lot yesterday and ran a bit, so my legs are super sore today. I think I overstretched a bit, so I need to go easier on myself when stretching. Today wass going to be a rest day, but if I feel up to it later I may work on my handstand. I've noticed that with the hollow body hold, it's much easier to keep my lower back on the ground if my hands are over my head as opposed to having them pointed towards my legs, which is odd since it's the last part of the progression. I think it's because I have long legs, and the weight from my hands provides extra leverage. So I'm going to focus on the hands-forward part of the hollow body progression, since it's more difficult for me. Also, small woot, I got casted in a production of Almost Maine, which is a play made up of a bunch of romantic vignettes. I'm super excited for it, rehearsals begin next week and we open Valentine's day weekend, so there's not a ton of time in between for rehearsal. Anyways, hope everyone elses challenges are going well, viva la rebellion!

That's interesting about the hollow body hold- I haven't even tried the hands-above-head version yet. Maybe I should!

And hooray for being cast in the play - that sounds great!

Hey there aisis! Thanks for dropping by my thread. =)  You're right, our goals are pretty similar.

Congrats on knocking out week one.  Are you as psyched for week two as you are for your play?

Hey, also, how are you keeping track of your grades throughout the duration of the challenge?  When I was in school, we had a website called blackboard where teachers update a virtual grade book for their students so parents could keep track of how their kids were progressing.  Do you know if you have anything like that?

And your rp section was pretty awesome. I used to rp myself, but haven't done so in a really long time. Maybe I should throw some fluff text into my post too. =D

Eh, yes and no. Mostly yes, but not too excited for this week because we have exams. Already half way through though, and I'm confident I did well on all of them so far. Calculus tomorrow is the one I'm a little worried about though.

Other than that, I've been keeping steady with the flexibility work and workouts. Yesterday I attempted crow pose and face-planted, but managed to laugh it off.
