Mini-challenge 3: Conquering The Village!

Chanda

Recommended Posts

... its time for the 3rd and final part of our mini-challenge series. You'll find the story so far here!

This mini-challenge STARTS on Monday 11.Feb at 00:01 and ENDS on Monday 18.Feb at 23:59

The situation was becoming dire, there were too many Roman patrols in the forrest and Getafix’s memory showed no signs of returning. The Gauls used the valuable information gathered by Evenewbie during her scouting expeditions and made a plan to save themselves.

Under the cover of night the Gauls sneaked out of the forrest and returned to their village, where they barricaded themselves. They had hoped that being back in familiar surroundings would help to bring back Getafix’s memory. Unfortunately, the plan backfired when Getafix saw the state of the village. A lot of tasks had been ignored, left undone or unfinished while the Gauls were distracted fighting the Romans. The village is in a very poor state indeed. Instead of trying to remember the magic potion recipe, Getafix is trying to bring order to the village all by himself.

The Romans quickly figured out that the Gauls sneaked out of the forrest and surrounded the village.  Under siege and with no magic potion, the Gauls are in trouble...

Asterix has an idea. He gathers all the villagers for a meeting and explains:

Getafix’s memory is not returning because he is stressed out. He can’t relax because of all the unfinished chores. If we want his memory to return we have to finish as many ignored chores as possible. Only when Getafix stops worrying about the state of the village will he be able to relax enough to remember the Magic Potion Recipe!

There are some mutters of disagreement from a few of the villagers... but after some friendly discussions (Gaul style friendly...), they come to the conclusion that they have no other options. A consensus is reached and they all agree to help out!

2009_01_28_asterix_uderzo_bagarre_inside

All the Gauls get busy finishing up their chores. Soon they are actually enjoying themselves! Occasionally they throw a few stinky fish over their barricades to keep the Romans from trying anything...

What YOU need to do:

  • Make a list of the things you have been ignoring (on a piece of paper or on your computer it doesn't matter).
  • Anything that is unfinished or you have been procrastinating about doing counts. It can be something that takes only seconds to complete... or something that takes much longer.
  • Don’t get overwhelmed by the list. Just pick something you can do right now and get started.
  • When you complete an item from your list, add it to our list of completed chores. (use 1 line per chore completed!)
  • This is a challenge for the Druids... any members of other guilds that want to join in are very much Welcome!
  • When we have reached a certain number of chores completed, Getafix’s memory will return. I reserve the right to increase the number if it looks like we are going to reach it too easily!
  • If Getafix’s memory returns before the end of the mini-challenge, the Gauls win. If not, the Romans wint!
  • If the Gauls win: participating Druids get to add +1 WISDOM to their attributes!

Examples of chores (this is not my list... its just some ideas to get you thinking of stuff for your list): Put away your Christmas decorations. Make that phone call(s) to family member or friend that you’ve been meaning to make. Send that email/letter/postcard/package... you been meaning to send. Return that item you bought but isnt what you wanted/doesnt fit/etc. Use up that gift voucher before it expires. Declutter a particular area. Clean a particular area. Make that appointment you've been meaning to make. Book that holiday. Finish a craft project. Change that light bulb or any other small repairs. Check the oil/air/washer fluid/tire threads on your car. Use that bubble bath/face mask or whatever you’ve gotten stashed away. Use the good porcelain for a nice meal (seriously... you have it, you should enjoy it!). Clean your keyboard... a forensics team shouldnt be able to figure out what you’ve been snacking on for the past 6 months from looking at your keyboard!). Throw out that food in the back of the fridge/pantry you know you will never eat and can't even be donated. Read/finish that book you’ve had on your bedside table for so long you dont even see it anymore. Post that recipe you had planned to post for Mini-challenge 1. Hang that piece of art work thats been collecting dust behind your bedroom door. You can also let go of a task you been planning to do but you know realistically you will never do or dont really need to do. Its amazing how liberating it is to declutter our to do list! (for example: repair the vacuum cleaner... it broke 6 months ago and you already replaced it, but for some reason you’ve kept the broken one to be repaired, even though deep down you know it will cost more to fix it/or its not fixable.).

Basically anything that you keep thinking needs to get done but haven't taken the time to do! The list of possible chores is endless... and you will feel awesome after you have crossed off a few of those items! And wonder why you put it off for so long.

I am totally in on this one.  Funny thing is that I completed on of these chores this week.  When I was doing sun salutations for the other challenge last week I noticed that my ceilings wore decorated with lovely dusty-spider-whatevers hanging down and sparkling in the sun.  I started with a duster - couldn't reach everywhere, moved on to a broom while talking on the phone on Friday, then finished today with the long hose attachment on the vacuum.

So maybe I can use this a stepping stone for all those other annoying chores around the house.  It sure feels nice to have it done.

You guys are psychic.  I keep one master computerized list, and the buggiest items go onto the paper calendar, where undone items are brought forward perpetually.  Just this morning I despaired at how a whole pack of nonpreferred tasks had ganged up against me on a Monday... then logged in and saw this challenge.

The extra incentive I was needing.  Thank you so much !

yes, it is inspiring and motivating to see the list.  My husband just noticed last week that I had put the Christmas decorations away.  They had been sitting in a stack of boxes for so long we had both started not even seeing them there.

My goal is to do one thing every day.

So funny and so true, it's interesting what happens once you cross that line in the space-time continuum and you just don't see the pile of "whatever" anymore....

I have chosen to believe in myself.

I'm with VioletFlame, with the goal to do one thing every day.

I did benefit from reading our Rebel Leader's blog back in August

http://www.nerdfitness.com/blog/2012/08/13/productivity/

and implemented his suggestion to focus on 3 big things every day.  But some days, 3 things are too much, and I dial it back to 1.

How detailed are we allowed to be?

I mean... Just yesterday, mine was...
Gather laundry

Bring laundry to laundry room

wash first load

hang part of first load

dry rest of first load

wash second load
hang part of second load

dry rest of second load

bring laundry back upstairs

fold fresh clothes

Test stored under-clothes for fit

rearrange stored under-clothes
Test stored T-shirts for fit

rearrange stored t-shirts

finally look up how to fold these items better

pack away stored clothes in space finally freed up by doing laundry
Gather non-fitting clothes to donate

and so on... >.> Cause goodness knows, I keep putting each step off.

:D IS THIS APPROPRIATE TO POST A PIC FOR?  I'M RATHER PROUD OF IT.

Top one on my list:  Enter data for the last mini-challenge

EDIT: I think I did it right.  Can someone check line 65?

I too suffer from this strange blindness. It is amazing how we just adjust to things that are not quite right and then don't notice/see them anymore and even adjust our behavior to work around them. Like if something is not where it should be and we just walk around it... without even thinking to move it to where it should be.

Yes, I read that too. I am a productivity ninja in training! :D The 3 MITs are a very helpful tool... (most important tasks)

Wow, Chanda.  I think we should get extra points for dropping emotional baggage.

I got tired just reading your list. OK, I am thinking doing laundry is part of your normal day to day stuff, but I think you can get 3 chores out of that long list to add to our challenge list:

  • Test stored clothes for fit
  • Look up how to fold clothes better and pack them away
  • Donate non-fitting clothes (this one counts once you have actually taken them out of your home/car and to where you plan to donate them)

I looked up your entry in the previous challenge. It is OK. :)

Dont forget to enter your completed chores in our current list before the challenge is over... or they wont be counted and we may not save Getafix in time! :D
