BlackWidowEowyn - Stage 2 Legendary Journey Stardate 11302.14

ANNND we're BACK!

With more determination and not just motivation but discipline...

Less talky more worky

Goal #1

Finish the 100 Burpee Challenge without falling behind more than one day. It will be no problem if I do them first thing upon arising. True Assassins must be disciplined... (i tend to put them off until it seems impossible to finish them all, hopefully this will cure that bad habit - DO IT NOW)

Possible points - STA +3, STR +2

Goal #2

Go outside to exercise at least 3x a week. (I already exercise daily but in the winter I wimp out and do it inside) This will get easier as the winter wanes, but it is VERY bad for me to be inside all day every day. (It's also bad for people who have to live with me :D) I signed up for an obstacle course race in June and it's time to get training for it... and going outside is a good start.

Possible points CON +3, CHA +1

Goal #3

a carry over from last challenge... BE ABLE TO DO AT LEAST ONE F@&%$*# PULLUP (unassisted)

It is completely ridiculous that I have yet to conquer these... I refuse to let them hold me back any more

this will be a Pass/Fail, either I can or not.

Can = STR +2, DEX +2

Not = 100 burpee penalty

Goal #4

Reach out to people more and let them know when I am thinking about them. This can include letters, phone calls, emails, and texts. There are so many ways of communicating these days and yet people are lonelier than they have ever been.

To be specific: 3 letters/emails a week and call my grandma at least once every 2 weeks. (I'm lucky to still have a Grandma, I need to make sure she knows I think about her)

Possible points = WIS +1, CHA +1

Great goals! What finally helped me on the pull up was the Grease the Groove. My pull up bar is in the doorway and every time I went by I did a chin up, neg, or pull up. I stuck a stool under there at first so I could actually do a pullup. Well, since I had a stool it wasn't a full pull up, my arms were bent a bit. But I still needed to do the motion of pulling myself up, and I think it helped

Nice goals! I feel you on the pull-up; it's one of my goals too, though not pass/fail because that would stress me out - I'm going on the theory that I'll get there when my body wants me to, and all I can do is keep consistent on working out and constantly pushing my limits. But I'll be cheering for you! Particularly with that 100 burpee penalty - ouch!

Plan..

Plan..

Plan... not my best area.. this planning stuff

I have to improvise a little as I travel a lot but I know if i try harder I can find more places to practice these

More focused attn to body rows, negative pullups and the like, esp when i have access to a bar

Also my being outside goal should present me with opportunities for tree branch pullups and climbing etc :D

also playgrounds are the perfect place (it's just not as much fun when its -10 out :P

Don't ditch the rows (they're a good exercise in and of themselves and work a different pulling plane of motion), but they're not really all that transferrable to pull-ups.  Definitely focus on negatives or assisted (if you've got a band).  I'd also make sure you get a certain volume in every day (or every other day as the case may be).  Whether GTG or a more traditional plan, I don't think it matters but volume is definitely key.

Great goals!  As you know, I'm right there with you on the pull up frustration :)

Which obstacle course race are you doing?  I signed up for the Spartan Race which will be my first.  I had to be talked down from jumping straight to Tough Mudder

You have some awesome goals BlackWidow! As Wolverine said, you WILL get a pull-up this challenge. The key is consistency :) I also love the "workout outside" goal. Being out in nature, or at least outside is SOO stimulating. I love it, and I know you will too!

Fantastic goals! Can't wait to see the progression!

I'm doing the Rugged Maniac in MN. My first as well... haha I wanted to do a tough mudder last year, but alas it did not happen. But now that I'm facing this one for real, I'm kinda glad it'll only be 3.1

Let me know how your Spartan race goes! When is it? Mine's in June

I considered the Rugged Maniac New England but it's right after my busy season so I'd be super stressed.  Mine is August 10 so you'll have to let me know how yours goes :)  I'll be doing my first normal 5K June 20 so hopefully that'll be a good confidence builder.  I figure if all else fails, my brother and sister are running the Spartan Race with me and I've already informed them that because I'm the shortest sibling, they're required to pull me up and over obstacles when necessary.

For the pull-up training while traveling...have you seen the book You Are Your Own Gym?  He does a set up with a folded towel over the top of a door.  Not sure how stable it is since I'm too accident prone to think of trying it at the moment but it could be useful.

No I haven't heard of that book but I will certainly go find it! :) thanks! I'm ready to try anything...

Haha That's great. I'm the shortest among my siblings as well (there's a reason I'm a Hobbit...) and I will definitely be enlisting help for obstacles. I have noticed that I can climb a lot better when my legs can be a part of the process. I can climb a rope for instance... but pull-ups are my downfall so far, no legs (well except for kipping... but ou know what i mean)

I will definitely let you know how it goes. right now I'm pretty psyched for it

First week update:

Goal #1- I am consistently doing my burpees... it's getting nastier to fall behind too which makes it easier to just do them A- (I didn't do any yesterday)

Goal #2- I was outside more than 3 days this week... I found a state park and some awesome hills and trails  (plus a troll cave). and yeah it was a little cold... but SO worth it :) A

goal #3- got some good solid effort in there... not pull up yet but it's only week one

Goal #4- I wrote 3 actual real on paper letters :) plus a few emails. And I called my Grandma on Friday. (It's amazing how little effort it takes to make someone's day better... why don't I do this more often?) A+

Week #2 update:

Goal 1 - Burpees - check (A) it helped that 13.1 included burpees this week I got 70 out of that :)

Goal 2 - outside - check (A) really fun snow day on tuesday... this is what I love about winter :)

Goal 3 - no pullup yet but practice time (B because I feel like I could have tried more this week)

Goal 4 - letters/emails - check (A) its really not that hard... why does it seem so impossible inside my head??

all in all a good week - I even got some real deadlifts in (yay my favorite) for the side challenge.

Did some serious backsliding in the diet department, I think I need to figure out a new way of tracking. I've been carrying on with that from last challenge, but I'm still not getting results (and it's making it hard to keep a positive focus) I'm going to do what I did last summer and our box did a paleo challenge. 10 points per day, deviations from paleo eating subtract from that, workouts add to it and so does sleeping enough. I lost about 10 lbs doing it without writing down amounts, just what and when I ate.

I'm a little less organized than Wolverine

*cough* or less afflicted with ocd *cough*

JUST KIDDING WOLVERINE!! :D

spreadsheets are cool and all that but making them just about drives me over the edge.

SO I think this will work...

I'm a big fan of doing what works best for YOU. If that's not keeping super close tabs and tracking everything (heathen!) then more power to ya!

Great job on week 2! Are you going to implement the new 10 point system for week 3?
