KB21's 'Fuel for Fitness' Challenge #3

KB21

Recommended Posts

Third challenge is a charm!

While my last challenge was mainly exercise related, this time around I will refocus my efforts into providing my body with clean, healthy fuel and breaking my bad habits of snacking, drinking alcohol and binge eating.

First Goal (Healthy Eating)- Abstain from alcohol for 6 weeks

This is going to be tough. I am a Uni student and that means every gathering or party is soaked it multitudes of cheap goon, beer and spirits. But I know liquid calories are killers. I am sick of the awful hangovers and cravings for oily food that come with them. I am sick of feeling depressed and emotional when I drink too much in one night. I am sick of feeling like even a week without alcohol would be impossible. Time to jump in feet first and try it for myself.

A=No deviations

B=1 deviation

C=2 deviations

D=3 deviations

E=4 deviations

F=More than 4 deviations

Second Goal (Healthy Eating)- Follow my tailored pescatarian food pyramid

65552_10200571683165424_2069559568_n.jpg

  • Each day I will print out a blank food pyramid and fill it in throughout the day
  • I will base my serving sizes off this website- http://www.measureup.gov.au/internet/abhi/publishing.nsf/Content/Portion+and+serving+sizes-lp
  • Anything not on the pyramid such a soft drink, lollies, ice-cream, chips, take- away food etc counts as a deviation
  • If I have more than the recommended number of servings of a certain food group this counts as a deviation as well
  • If I have less than 1L of water a day this will count as a deviation as well (aim for 2L a day)

A=No deviations

B=1 deviation

C=2 deviations

D=3 deviations

E=4 deviations

F=More than 4 deviations

11th March-24th March=8km

Fourth Goal (Life Goal)- 30 mins of Spanish vocabulary practice and culture immersion a day

Learning a second language has been on my 'to do' list for a few years now. It is fair to say I have the travel bug! My passion for meeting people from all around the globe has lead me to learn a few phrases here and there, but my horrible memory and lack of persistence has prevented me from becoming fluent in anything other than my first language- English.

Hopefully that's all about to change. My boyfriend and I have just signed up to sponsor a child in Peru and hence I have decided to try and learn Spanish.

I will watch YouTube videos, get Spanish apps for my phone, write to my sponsor Child in Spanish, get a notebook to practice my writing, watch Spanish movies and do my own private research about the culture of Spain and Peru.

A= Complete 30mins of Spanish vocabulary practice and culture immersion every day for the six weeks

B= Miss one or two 30mins of Spanish vocabulary practice and culture immersion sessions over the six weeks

C= Miss three or four 30mins of Spanish vocabulary practice and culture immersion over the six weeks

D= Miss five or six 30mins of Spanish vocabulary practice and culture immersion sessions over the six weeks

E= Miss six or seven 30mins of Spanish vocabulary practice and culture immersion sessions over the six weeks

F= Miss more than seven 30mins of Spanish vocabulary practice and culture immersion sessions over the six weeks

Good to see you again, KB21. Your goals look - challenging. You are one tough grader. I love the idea of filling in the pyramid as you go through the day. It feels way more creative than logging calories in an app.

Hi KB21

Very challenging sounding goals! Just wanted to comment on your goal of not drinking alcohol for 6 weeks. I'm also a student (though mid-thirties) and have always found it hard to string together a few days of not drinking. It's just such a pervasive part of our lives, it seems. I decided about 4 months ago to quit drinking for the long term. I wasn't sure how it would go, but it's been such a positive and refreshing experience for me! Looking back, I realize that in some ways it is much harder to abstain from something for a short period of time than to make it a lifestyle. When it's a lifestyle decision, my mind isn't seeking excuses or loopholes or the end when I can indulge again. It's just the way things are now. Simple :) (haha)

All the best with your goals!!

Hi fellow uni student!

I love your personal food pyramid idea. I currently write down what I eat on my computer, but am not at the point of tracking how much of each food group I eat.

Also I'll be here cheering you on regarding no alcohol intake. My challenge exempts alcohol too, though it is not explicitly stated in my goals. I avoid it since I'm on a sport's team and take my own interpretation of our drinking rules to an extreme by not drinking when we are in season. I found the first week of stopping was hard but it got so much easier after that (also I was shocked by how much money I saved by not buying booze). You can do it!!!

END OF WEEK ONE UPDATE

Firstly to reply to my dear friends..

LuckyMe- The pyramid has been a fun way of monitoring my daily intake! I feel it has worked really well so far, getting me to think about serving sizes, eating more servings of vegetables and wholegrains (avoiding white rice, bread and pasta as much as possible) and limiting treats to once a week only (I use this as a reward system too ie. I am only allowed my treat when I have completed all my other goals for that day.) So yeah I would definitely recommend making your own Healthy Eating Pyramid, even on top of counting calories so you get a more rounded spread of data regarding what you are eating :)

twiggy-That is such a great way of looking at this challenge! I really admire your strength of character for making this a lifestyle decision instead of just a short term goal. Hopefully one day I will be able to look at abstaining from alcohol in this light too, yet unfortunately at the moment I can't see it happening for a few more years at least, well at least not until I finish Uni and I get through all those 21st parties haha Do you have any advice on what to do at parties when everyone else is drinking and you don't want to be a party pooper??

garjan- Thanks buddy I appreciate your support! My main reason for giving up alcohol was also sport based, I was just getting back into my running and was sick of seeing progress for a week or so until I got drunk and then seemed to go back to square one again. Yay I made it through a week and haven't missed it once, even though my house mates had friends round and drank on Friday night. I do have a lot of 21st coming up in the next month so that will be the real challenge. I would love to hear how you are going with this goal too!

Healthy Eating- This idea is working pretty well so far, it is super easy to just put a mark in the right category each time I eat and it is giving me a good broad view of what food groups I am eating too little or too much of. Immediately I realized I needed to swap around the 1 serving daily of Dairy, Fish and Eggs to 2 serves Daily and 2 serves daily of Legumes, Beans and Nuts to 1 serve daily. Unfortunately this is where my challenge stopped this time around, for the next week I was unable to record my eating, complete my Spanish lessons or exercise as much as I would have liked, yet despite this I was able to stick to my hardest goal NO ALCOHOL!!!

I forgot to take measurements at the end or week 6 and I fear I have eaten so much chocolate since then that it would be pointless and slightly disheartening, so instead I will just focus on the next challenge coming up shortly and attempt to get back on the band wagon then!
