Betty Edwards, "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain".

And I have kept my original sketches, but I'm not quite courageous enough to post them online!

So I'm stalking this forum a year later. But that book is AWESOME!!! I <3 it.

We do not show off, for we are the unseen. We are not motivated by aesthetics, but effectiveness. Our bodies are our weapons, not our trophies.

They are the civilians.

We are the warriors.

Further reviving this thread.

I have two stories.

First, the other day, it was raining outside. Like, really pouring. But, I really needed to buy some groceries - I was completely out. And as I don't own a car, this would require me walking to the store, which is about two miles away one-way. I did not want to walk in the rain. But then I was like, "What the heck - I need food." And so I put on my coat and my hood and made the trek. I was soaked all the way through by the time I got there. Needless to say, I bought an umbrella for the way back, which made it a little less unpleasant. But after it was all over, despite the cold, I felt awesome.

And today I joined the gym. I am super shy and nervous about doing things I've never done before, and almost talked myself out of it, but before I thought too much I went and did it. It was kind of annoying, though, 'cause it took way longer than planned to get set up (as they wanted to give me the whole song and dance to get me on their programs and spend more money), and by then I was reconsidering (amidst inner screams of "I know what I'm doing, just leave me alone and let me work out!). But then I worked out and it was great and I felt awesome. So yeah. Now I have to survive the rest of their song and dance on Monday. *rolls eyes*

Engaged berserker mode this morning in the gym.  Been going to the gym for a couple of months now. Worked my way from machines to dumbbells but barbells just intimidated me. Don't know why but I think I just felt like I would look like an idiot using the bar with no weight while I got my bearings...  Well, this morning I prepared myself to do it and just jumped on in. Did barbell squats, barbell benchpresses and barbell curls this morning.  All for the first time!   And even though I'm sure I probably did look ridiculous, I'm incredibly happy I did it.

Hell yeah! Well done. It feels good, doesn't it?

I bench-pressed for the first time in a long while yesterday, not caring what anybody said or thought. Benched 70 pounds, 3 reps of 10. Planning to work my way up to at least my body weight (about 185).

Keep it up and you'll be kicking ass in no time. :-)

So, I went into Force Body mode (Jedi equivalent to a berserker mode) and started working out with a barbell, which used to scare the hell out of me. Guess what, I ended up doing:

5x5 barbell bench presses (50 kg)
5x5 barbell rack squats (25 kg)

5x5 barbell rack overhead presses (25 kg)
5x5 barbell deadlifts (50 kg)

And best of all, finishing up the workout, I said, let's attempt the pull-up again. Best I could do before was 5x1 negatives. But you know what, I did 3x3 kipped pull-ups! So, yeah!

I am normally a comfort-zone kind of guy when it comes to choosing my route for my runs. Because the act of running is already out of my comfort zone, I like to know where I'm going, so I almost always choose the same route, or at least one I know well (such as a road I have driven, walked, or run before). Saturday, however, a train prevented me from crossing over to my usual route in a town I run often (Hurricane, WV). Rather than stand and wait for the train to pass or run to the tunnel that goes under the tracks, I decided to stay on the side of the tracks where I was and follow an unfamiliar back road. I'm glad I did; the road was very scenic and mostly quiet (a few cars passed me), much quieter than my usual route.

I just found out about this thread and I like what I'm reading so far. Everyone's personal stories are a real inspiration. I have two stories to share, so it's a two-fer.

Be me 10 years ago in college.

Notice cute girl in class one day.

Be too afraid to confess crush on her.

Wait a whole year.

Randomly meet her on campus again.

Finally muster courage to tell her.

Find out she's a married woman.

Feel like utter garbage.

Days later...never regret going berserker in spite of the cowardice.

2nd story is more recent. In September 2017 I decided I wanted to become certified by the NSCA as a strength and conditioning specialist. I studied for 6 months. I entered the computer lab at the testing facility very anxious and my heart was thumping in my chest because I was nervous I would fail. I didn't get my certification that day. It felt like getting punched in the stomach. But yesterday....I did pass because I wasn't afraid. I dusted myself off and stared that exam dead in the eyes.

Never give up.
